What does “ABBYY” mean?

The company’s name translates as “keen eye.”

This word comes from the reconstructed parent

language of the Miao-Yao, Nu, Hmong-Mien, Hmong

and Kim Mun groups of the Sino-Tibetan language

family. “Keen eye” reflects the key areas of ABBYY’s

specialization: document recognition and linguistic

technologies and services.

ABBYY has one of the largest global research centers in Artificial

Intelligence: more than 500 people work in ABBYY’s R&D department

ABBYY is globally renowned for its OCR, data capture

and document recognition solutions, products and

tools. It also makes substantial investments in

developing breakthrough technologies in two areas

of Artificial Intelligence: recognition technologies and

computational linguistics. ABBYY looks forward to

introducing new technologies for automating language

tasks for trans

lation, intelligent search, fact-extraction

and more.

Breakthrough

Technologies

Recognition Technologies

ABBYY’s OCR technologies have become syn-onymous with high-quality OCR.

Intensive research enabled ABBYY to support more than 190 Latin and Cyrillic languages, as well as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Greek, Armenian, Hebrew and Arabic.

ABBYY’s intelligent Multilevel Document Analy-sis and Data Capture technologies provide the capabilities to detect complex document struc-tures and process various types of flexible forms. The company continues its research in the field of computer vision. One possible application of this research lies in environmental recognition (e.g. street names, car license plates, etc.).

Linguistic Technologies

ABBYY’s 15-years of research in computation-al linguistics has resulted in the creation of a unique language-independent model – Univer-sal Syntax and Semantic Hierarchy. This model, based on formal language descriptions and analysis of text corpora, allows the extraction of the true meaning of words and their interrela-tions in a text.

One application of of this model is the creation of an intelligent search platform for monitoring, fact extraction, and text analysis.

Another possible application of the new technol-ogy is the creation of a next-generation machine translation system, which will work for all major languages.
