Modern Wood Energy
Talbotts is the UK’s leading and original manufacturer of biomass and wood waste to energy systems. The brand, which was established over 35 years ago by Bob Talbott, is still very much a family concern today. Since the mid -1970s Talbott’s has been at the forefront of developing air heaters and boilers to convert biomass or wood waste materials into energy.
Talbott’s original systems were developed for the woodworking industry, utilising wood waste for factory space heating. Today, Talbotts manufacture a broad product range suited to many different applications with over 5000 installations world-wide including the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia, Russia and Australia. The Talbotts ‘wood working’ range of wood waste heating solutions, provide a simple and economic alternative to the rising cost of wood waste disposal and heating provision. There are a broad range of system options available from manual fed units, suitable for solid wood off cuts or pallets, through to automatic units for the safe, clean and efficient combustion of extracted dust, chips, shavings, MDF, chipboard and shredded wood waste, to produce hot air or hot water. The continuous investment into research and development along with pioneering ideas from our design teams has led to the success of this extensive range of proven systems today.
All our units meet emissions requirements for use within smoke control areas under the Clean Air Act without the need to fit an afterburner, ensuring low cost and ‘smoke free’ installations. We even have installations within local air quality management areas, which is due to us perfecting the design to run cleanly and efficiently over many years of operation.
We pride ourselves in regards to the durability of our equipment and we still have heaters operating that were installed over 20 years ago. All components are of a high grade with spare parts supplied locally, ensuring no long waits or downtime of heater operation whilst waiting for parts to be imported. All systems are manufactured at our Midlands based factory and rigorously tested prior to despatch. As one of the most experienced company’s within this field we can evaluate requirements quickly and offer honest advice with recommendations.
In 2009 the company received an investment by Air Plants Dust Extraction of Leicester adding further financial and engineering experience to the dedicated Talbott team. Air Plants, whose parent company is Smith Bros (Leicester) Ltd are specialists in dust extraction, perfectly complimenting the Talbott product range. We also work closely with many other different dust extraction companies and can provide a broad range of ancillaries such as bunkers, silos, transfer systems and are an authorised distributor for the Untha range of shredding solutions.
We have a dedicated department to provide after-sales servicing and can offer assistance with securing finance, RHI accreditation, environmental and planning requirements.
With pay backs in as little as 12 months, it makes financial sense to use on site generated wood waste to produce heating for your factory, offices or workshops.
We work alongside a number of reputable finance companies to which we can offer competitive solutions. We can give a comprehensive service where, with approval, we will seek the best finance offer on our customer’s behalf.
We are an authorised supplier for Siemens Energy Efficiency Finance Scheme supported by the Carbon Trust, where flexible solutions are available including pre-leases, leasing, direct loans and hire / lease purchase.
We also hold a full consumer credit licence.
We offer a comprehensive service to support funding for projects such as grant availability, renewable heat incentive accreditation and finance.
Talbotts on going investment into product improvement along with a consistent understanding of present and future environmental policy, ensures system compliancy. With the use of unique multi-cyclone technologies and advanced combustion control techniques, this allows us to meet these obligations. Such examples would be where we have replaced inefficient wood waste boilers that couldn’t meet stringent local environmental standards i.e. local air quality management areas (Zero emissions zones).
Talbotts have a team of in-house experts that can support any local planning requirements.

Savings
The use of on site generated wood waste to produce heating has substantial financial and environmental benefits.
With landfill costs continuing to rise along with the likelihood and risk that some wood wastes will no longer be able to be dumped to landfill, the investment into a wood waste heater gives you peace of mind for your disposal requirements. It also reduces vehicle emissions from the transportation of otherwise useful waste to landfill.
Any type of wood waste that doesn’t contain heavy metals or halogenated compounds such as hardwood, softwood, MDF, chipboard and MFC is suitable to utilise on Talbott systems.
The cost of oil or gas for heating is very expensive and if you have access to ‘free fuel’ from your production process, annual energy savings can be extremely high.
Most customers, on average, achieve a payback within three years and as little as one, with the investment into a Talbott wood waste heater.
Your investment will also have the benefit of reducing your on site carbon footprint and may be eligible to receive support from the Governments Renewable Heat Incentive.
Renewable heat incentive
In November 2011 the UK Government launched Phase One of the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme to support investment into renewable technologies. The use of wood waste or biomass to produce heat meets the criteria to receive this ‘cash back’. For every kW of useful heat produced an eligible installation would receive a tariff, depending on the size and type of installation. Payments will be made quarterly to the operator and owner of the wood waste renewable heating plant and once accredited are guaranteed for 20 years. For up to date tariff rate information, please visit Talbotts web site.
Product selector
We offer a number of different heater sizes which vary depending on the type of wood fuel you are looking to utilise, capacity and the preferred heat medium. Please refer to the table overleaf which is meant as an approximate guide to which heater may be suitable for your requirements.
When sizing a heating system we will take a number of factors into account such as building size/heat loss, wood waste availability and form, existing infrastructure, energy savings, capital cost and pay back.
Please note that Talbotts can also offer ‘bespoke solutions’ and design/size, according to your requirements.

Please note that the above table is meant as a guide only. A comprehensive heat loss should be undertaken to determine the required heating system for your premises.
Fuel consumption will vary depending on heat demand within the building and fuel specification. Most models are designed to utilise general hardwood, softwood,
MDF, Chipboard and MFC, however they must not contain any heavy metals or halogenated compounds. It is the responsibility of the end user to ensure that they meet
local planning and environmental requirements, these can vary depending on geographical location.
The RHI (renewable heat incentive) is a Government scheme to reward investment into renewable heat technologies. The operator must meet the regulations for the RHI
in order to become accredited to the scheme. * This is at the time of publication and may be subject to change if there are amendments to the regulations in the future,
or further technologies are added to the scheme.

Case Study
Mansion house interiors based in Leicester who are shop fitters and manufacturers of high quality commercial joinery, contacted Talbotts in January 2012. They were looking for a solution to reduce their wood waste disposal costs and provide heating for their workshop.
Tony Hardy, Managing Director looked at other wood waste heaters but opted for a Talbott due to their renowned reputation for durability and quality. He placed an order for the equipment at the end of January with the equipment delivered and installed soon after within early February.
Tony Hardy commented “I actively went out to market to look for a solution to solve my wood waste problem. I looked at other manufacturers but opted for a Talbotts due to it being competitively priced, yet also a high-quality long lasting build. I was very impressed that the unit was installed quickly after confirming my order and with the quality of the installation”.
Their heater eliminates up to 2 tonnes of chipboard, MDF and general wood waste per week along with providing comprehensive heat to their 10,000 sq.ft. workshop. It has been independently tested and meets Government legislation for combustion and emission levels. As a result this appliance is exempt under the Clean Air Act for use within smoke control areas without the need to fit an afterburner.

Case Study
Vascroft Contractors Ltd based in London offer construction, refurbishment, engineering, joinery and fitting services to a wide range of sectors. With the support of an interest free loan through the carbon trust and a grant from the bioenergy capital grant scheme they invested into a Talbott TMA automatic wood waste air heater to provide space heating for their factory. The heater produces 300kW of heat whilst combusting in the region of 70kg/hr of shredded wood off cuts, MDF and Chipboard. They also purchased an Untha LR700 shredder that reduces their fuel efficiently to 25mm chips to automatically feed into the storage bunker solution. The shredder, bunker, transfer system and heater were all provided by Talbotts as part of a turnkey solution. Ashwin Vora, financial controller for the company comments “We are delighted with the reliability and performance of the heating system, this investment has achieved some dramatic savings for ourselves since its installation in May 2010. Talbotts were extremely helpful in achieving funding for our investment and their Commercial Director Amy Fielding took care of everything for us. We take our corporate responsibilities seriously and using our wood waste to produce carbon neutral heat certainly helps towards this. We would highly recommend dealing with Talbotts due to their commitment and professionalism”.

Avanti Kitchens and Bedrooms, of Lye near Stourbridge installed a Talbotts C4 Air back in 2007 which has continued to
operate reliably since. They were frustrated at their constantly increasing waste and heating costs and looked at several options on how they could reduce them.
“It cost us £15,000 to heat the factory in 2006 and we were paying over £45,000 per year on waste removal. We had been contacted by our waste management company and informed that these prices were due to rise significantly in 2007” commented Nigel Carpenter of Avanti.
“We looked at several manufacturers of wood waste combustion equipment and chose Talbotts over others because of their glowing reports from existing customers. We were taken to see systems working in the field and were impressed by the design of the plant and how it fitted in with the existing extraction system”
Avanti are situated within a residential area so great care was taken in the overall design of the installation. Talbotts carried out a survey to ensure all Environmental issues were adhered to and that noise levels were not exceeded.
Nigel added “We were well looked after by all at Talbotts from start to finish. Their dedicated funding department secured us an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust and advised of additional funding that was available including government and local grants. The installation was of the highest professional caliber and did not impede on our production. Furthermore, the after-sales and servicing since its installation has provided a feeling of confidence that our machine will continue to provide free heating and waste removal for life!”
Wensley Group is a well established construction and refurbishment company based in the West Midlands. As part of their
on going commitment to be sustainable and accreditation for ISO9001 they invested into a Talbott C5 600kW boiler to use their on site generated MDF, chipboard and general wood waste. The installation is eligible for the Governments renewable heat incentive where they will receive quarterly payments for every kW of usable heat produced for their factory and offices. This is over and above the benefit of reducing wood waste disposal and heating costs.
