Cisco College Fire Academy

Essential Functions Standards

The following outlines the competitive selection process and the primary rating tools used to

award admission to the Cisco College Fire Academy. TSI Test scores will be averaged and an

Agility Test will be administered. An interview will also determine admission to the Fire

Academy.

Academic Ability Requirements

I understand that I must meet or exceed the following minimum cut-off scores on the TSI (computerized placement test). All applicants must take the TSI.

• Reading --- 351 or higher • Writing --- 363/4 or higher • MATH --- 350 or higher

NOTES: 1.) Minimum TSI Scores will be awarded to those having previously passed all sections of TASP or an approved alternative. Such applicants may choose to take the TSI for higher scores so that they can be more competitive in the selection process. 2.) These standards will be reviewed and revised as deemed necessary by the Cisco College personnel - Executive Dean of Workforce and Economic Development, Coordinator of Workforce and Economic Development, the Counselor for Technical Programs and TSTC personnel.

Physical Capacity and other Requirements

I understand that as a student in the Cisco College Fire Academy, I may be required to work under the following conditions or circumstances and meet or exceed the requirements of the physical conditions by providing a physicians statement indicating good health

Physical Abilities**

• Hold a department-issued chainsaw overhead for thirty seconds.

• Fully open and close a typical Abilene fire hydrant (clockwise open/counter-clockwise close). • Drag a dry 5” supply line approximately 150 feet.

• Carry an Abilene Fire Department high-rise hose pack and axe to the fifth floor or the drill tower. • Drag a 170-pound dummy twenty feet.

• Move a heavy piece of furniture twenty feet.

• Hit a metal sled with a dead-blow sledgehammer (simulates chopping a hole with an axe). • Carry an Abilene Fire Department smoke ejector approximately 100 feet.

** Note: Examinees must wear a fifty pound weighted vest while performing these tasks. Please check with your physician prior to registering if you have concerns about performing these tasks due to health related issues.

Other Requirements

• Understand that the tasks used in the Physical Abilities are representative but not all-inclusive of the many varied tasks and conditions which may be encountered in training and work situations. • Have the ability to maintain a rigorous and demanding schedule to include a minimum of 24

classroom/training hours per week.

• Understand that I will be asked to agree and sign to compliance with the Rules and Regulations of the Cisco College Fire Academy as presented during orientation.

• Comply with all other application requirements as stated in the Academy brochure and any State regulatory guidelines, policies and laws.

I understand that the above physical standards and other requirements are required for admission to the Cisco College Fire Academy Program. I hereby certify that I possess these physical abilities and agree to abide by the other

requirements. I understand that if I am later found to be limited in these areas of physical ability or if I have purposefully misrepresented my abilities to gain admission to the program, I may be dismissed from the Cisco College Fire Academy by decision of the Executive Dean of Workforce and Economic Development with the concurrence of the Provost of Cisco College and TSTC personnel. I understand that successful completion of the Cisco College Fire Academy does not guarantee me a position with any fire department. I must follow proper application procedures with that department.
