FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

July 31, 1996

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN IMSA SUMMER' AD'VENTURES II CHARLESTON -- More than 100 talented 9th- and 1 0-graders from

throughout Illinois converged on the Eastern Illinois University campus June 23-29 for the Summer 'AD'ventures II program, co-sponsored by Eastern's Honors

Programs and the School of Adult and Continuing Education.

'AD'ventures is the only program of its kind in the state, although a similar program for seventh- and eighth-graders is held at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora.

The weeklong program began with a dramatization of the history of scientific method. From there, students individually and in small groups worked with DNA and biotechnology, polymers and computers. They went on field trips and established a "colony" on the moon.

Seven instructors from high schools across the state taught a variety of interpretive and hands-on projects. Tim McCollum, a Charleston Junior High School science teacher, oversaw the program.
