Our Path to Sainthood…

Venerable Monsignor Jean Martin Zozine Eyraud

“The Little Frenchman”

Venerable Msgr. Jean Martin Zozine Eyraud, born in France on November 11, 1880, arrived in the United States in June 1910, and served as a parish priest and pastor in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Louisiana, until his death in 1968. He was well-known for his holiness, wisdom, and steadfast desire to serve the poorest of his parishes. Msgr. Eyraud served his parishioners with selfless energy and fatherly love.

As per his request, in 1913, Fr. Jean Martin Eyraud became the pastor of St.

Thomas the Evangelist in Pointe-a -la-Hache, Louisiana. In 1916, he became pastor at St. Peter Church in Reserve, Louisiana, where he would serve for 47 years! Both parishes were poor – financially and spiritually.

Fr. Eyraud realized early on “that his parishioners had little understanding of the Catholic faith… Realizing the importance of good formation for his parishioners, he gave impactful homilies, for all ages. He put a lot of energy into teaching not only the Gospels, but also into instilling a sense of religion and the necessary respect linked to the Sacraments” (www.champsaur.net).

“The town of Re serve (Louisiana) at that time was well known for its dance halls and games rooms. As a result, men would rather go to the bar to play cards than go to Mass. Only women were present at Sunday Mass. Father Jean Eyraud quickly realized this. To remedy this, he decided to visit the parishioners at their homes. All were struck by his gentleness, his goodness, and [above all] his firm determination for the salvation of souls… But beyond visiting families, what could he do for these men who did not come to Mass? Inspired, he decided to negotiate with the bar closest to the parish to get a later opening time, AFTER Sunday Mass! … [While a few men began to fill his church,] men were still scarce. He offered them a weekly mass for them at 5:00 AM. Sixty men participated in this first Mass. But on Easter Day 1916, a big surprise, 700-750 men took part in this 5:00 AM Mass! Such a crowd had never been seen in St. Peter Church, in all

times!” (www.champsaur.net).

At both churches he arrived to find the church grounds in a deplorable state of disrepair. In both parishes, Fr. Eyraud himself completely renovated the churches, rectories, and grounds, including a cemetery. His example encouraged parishioners to pitch in with future church projects.

The town of Reserve grew very quickly, so Father Eyraud built another church – St. Joan of Arc in LaPlace. Serving both St. Peter and St. Joan of Arc simultaneously, Father Eyraud could be seen “trudging down to LaPlace over dusty , at times muddy, and other times rough roads to hear confessions on Saturdays and to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on Sundays, always with a smile on his weary face and a cheery word on his lips.

As both St. Peter and St. Joan of Arc grew in number of families with children, a school was essential. While Fr. Eyraud had first envisioned one school for both white and black students, he settled on building one school (St. Pierre) for white children and another (St. Catherine) for black children. Some parishioners were very unhappy to see the construction of a school for black children, and as a result, Fr. Eyraud suffered quite violent attacks for promoting this project. However, Fr. Eyraud remained firm, benevolent towards all,

welcoming, and charitable. Teaching these black children seemed to him essential. Fr. Eyraud cared greatly for his black parishioners, but he was most concerned about black children, who were generally poor and had illiterate parents.

Fun fact: the first director of St. Catherine School for black children was

(now) Saint Sister Katherine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.

*Venerable Monsignor Eyraud’s story is heartwarming, and at some points funny. To read the whole story, go to the “Our Path to Sainthood… the rest of the story” link at www.stpetschurch.org*
