A Message from the Executive Director

This month marks the beginning of a brand new era, a brave new world! We’ve embraced the new reality of the Covid-19 pandemic and mobilized to meet its challenges head-on: we’ve re-oriented our service modalities to remote/virtual applications which allow us to continue to provide activities and services to you, our senior members. We have continued to execute wellness calls and case assistance; we’ve continued to provide new, interesting and exciting programming for a varied virtual activity calendar; and we are continuing to interface with other stakeholders within our community to constantly explore options and opportunities to expand, increase and improve the options and services we make available to you….in other words, this pandemic has NOT stopped us from our work of providing and doing the very best that we can for you, our seniors.

Plans and activities are also going forward to get our centers ready for re-opening, although we cannot give any precise date for that at the moment; necessary repairs and upgrades are being executed; total renovations of sites are on schedule, and everything is being done to ensure that CHSCC will be positioned to continue to serve as your network, your anchor, your resource for services and activities. To be sure, this new time also marks an era of change which, in many ways, can be somewhat painful to accept and adjust to; while we know that this can be somewhat unsettling, rest assured that we are here to help you navigate through all these changes...know that we are just a phone call away if you have any questions, concerns, or any need; we will do our best to provide assistance or point you in the right direction, to get you the help you might need.

And remember, this pandemic is not over yet, so please take care to remain vigilant, continue to practice social distancing, wearing your masks, frequently wash/sanitize your hands, and generally keep yourself and others safe around you.

Again, as we embark upon this New Year, let’s remember that we are all part of a larger whole, a community, and each of us is made stronger by the sum, the greater sum, of all the parts of the community.

Did you know...

- New York has adopted Automatic Voter Registration (AVR)! The new law designates the Department of Motor Vehicles and other State agencies that interact directly with New York residents to work with the State Board of Elections to integrate agency and voter registration applications. This new, single application will serve as both an application for services and a voter registration application. Only eligible voters may register, and applications will be transmitted to the State Board of Elections with the signature and consent of the applicant. Applicants will also be given the opportunity to choose a political party. The DMV is planned to come online in 2023. Learn more here.

- Beginning January 1, 2021, New York City voters will use Ranked Choice Voting

in special and primary elections for local offices such as mayor, public advocate, comptroller, borough president, and City Council. Voters will be able to rank up to 5 candidates in order of preference, instead of choosing just one. NYC Votes is partnering with organizations across the city by hosting training sessions for those who plan to educate voters in their own communities. These training sessions will explain how Ranked Choice Voting works, cover frequently asked questions, and share best practices for educating voters.

- As you may be aware, economic stimulus measures in reaction to the economic fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic have been passed, including Rent Assistance. Within the stimulus is a provision for rental assistance for those who meet certain requirements. With this in mind we encourage you to apply for rental relief from the government if any of the circumstances outlined in the program apply. Rental assistance can be applied for online through the website below. For those without Internet access, applications are accepted via phone as well. If applying online, please follow up by phone to ensure your application is being processed. The deadline to apply is February 1st, 2021.
