Accessibility Tools in

Blackboard Collaborate

(ONLINE)

Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing, or ‘virtual classroom’, product. It allows lecturers and administrators to teach students and meet colleagues while working from their own computer.

The potential to reach remote students and workers is one of the most attractive features of this product; however, there are many reasons why you need to consider accessibility for online sessions. This session explores the use of Accessibility tools that are integrated in the virtual rooms.

Building Online Courses using

Frameworks

This workshop is designed for participants who have completed the Moodle 2 Basics or Blackboard Learn 9.1 Basics workshop. You will learn more about Online Frameworks, how to get them, how to use them, and how they can help your training organisation improve their online course offerings. We will then go into an open workshop time, to help you start developing your online course.

We’ll start you off using an Online Framework, a basic online course structure set up in either Moodle or Bb9. See: http://elss.dtwd.wa.gov.au for a list of Frameworks. Even if there is no current Framework for your exact course, you can use our blank template Framework to assist you to skip a few steps in setting up your Moodle or Bb9 course.

Collaborative Numeracy: Working

Together to Build Numeracy Skills

in Adults

This program will be a series of hands-on, practical, adult numeracy teaching workshops. The strategies covered will focus on making sense of numeracy concepts and language through enjoyable activities, rather than rote learning of rules which has failed learners in the past. Strategies will include a variety of structured pair and small group activities as well as the use of hands-on materials. Learning games and activities for skills practice and recall of number facts, such as multiplication tables, will also be included. Expect to walk away with resources and ideas you can apply immediately with your students as well as a deeper knowledge of numeracy concepts to use in your work. The program of three 1½ day workshops will introduce and explore strategies for teaching:

• calculation and estimation with whole numbers, decimals and percentages

• measurement, calculation and estimation with relevant metric units

• interpretation and creation of graphs, and averages. DATES: FACILITATOR: VENUE: TIME: COST:

Introduction to Certificates in

General Education for Adults

(CGEA) Part 1

This workshop for new CGEA teachers is designed to help them orient themselves, and their teaching approaches, to teach literacy and numeracy skills to

adults. The workshop will focus on finding ways to

establish a teaching/learning environment that most

closely reflects the way that literacy and numeracy skills

are acquired in the real world, by all of us.

Through a series of participatory activities, teachers will: • Examine the main issues faced by adults returning

to formal study, and the implications for CGEA teachers

• Identify processes which most effectively support literacy learning in adults

• Explore strategies for setting up collaborative teaching and learning practices

• Develop an overview of the relationship between effective adult literacy teaching and the use of the CGEA framework as a basis for formal skills recognition and credentialing

• Practice interpreting the CGEA curriculum document for assessment, moderation and course planning purposes

• Clarify questions regarding how the CGEA sits within the VET sector as a pathway for students.

Introduction to Certificates in

General Education for Adults

(CGEA) Part 2

This workshop for CGEA teachers is designed to explore the aspects of teaching adult literacy classes that challenge teachers as they attempt to meet the needs

of all their students. The workshop will focus on finding

ways to establish a teaching/learning environment that

most closely reflects the way we all acquire literacy and

numeracy skills in the real world. The content of the workshop will include:

• Setting up collaborative teaching and learning practices

• Finding and creating teaching resources for students with a diversity of backgrounds and existing skills

• Meeting the needs of different levels in the one group

• Using the CGEA framework to recognise existing and developing skills

• Recording assessment, moderation and course

planning that describe flexible responses to

students’ needs while keeping a focus on teaching rather than ‘paperwork’

• The relationship of literacy teaching to broader language and numeracy issues.

The workshop will be of value to both experienced and relatively new CGEA teachers. Participants must have completed at least 6 months of CGEA teaching and have done an induction workshop for the CGEA such as Introduction to the CGEA Part 1.
