in the heart of medieval rovereto, the casa d’arte Futurista depero, the branch of the Mart, is the only museum founded by a Futurist. Known as la casa del Mago (the Magician’s House), after Fortunato depero, it exhibits about 3,000 objects bequeathed by the artist to the town, including paintings, drawings, tarsia in cloth and “bux-us”, collages, posters and flyers, furniture, toys and objects of ap-plied art.

stone worked by skilled stonemasons shows evidence

of early christianity in the alps, and enormous medieval

and late medieval frescoes by dynasties of itinerant

painters. not to mention the large cycles that teach

followers precepts and biblical passages or represent the

particularly important moments of a community. Museums,

churches, capitals, monasteries, chapels and tabernacles

offer an extraordinary heritage of sacred art just waiting

to be discovered, always with something new. the close

relationship is shown between religion and man, as well as

the work of extraordinary artists.

of years, preserved in small modern museums, to

underground passages with the splendours of roman

civilization. adventurous tours to the places where

man built pile-dwellings on water, and where minerals

were dug, smelted and made into the first metal tools.

Preserved traces can be followed to the origins of time,

when man settled for the first time, thanks to museums,

the Bell of Peace, forged from the cannons of the First World War, was commissioned by the priest don antonio rossaro after the war. it is the largest tolling bell in the world. thanks to the Fondazione campana dei caduti, it is a place for reflection and projects focused on interaction between peoples. every evening, the bell tolls a hundred times to send peace throughout the world.

Built between 1908 and 1912 on a spur overlooking the val d’astico, the fort had the role of prevent-ing attempts to break through the italian front and withstand heavy bombings. it had large storage de-pots, an aqueduct and a power sta-tion. inside, visitors can find an at-tractive modern museum tour with a series of interactive installations, created by studio azzurro.

l-shaped Fort larino has a moat, a fortified courtyard, cannon holes, rifle slits and an attractive granite structure, all restored due to a suc-cessful renovation project. it was built in early 1860 to defend the road from Brescia.

the fort is one of the defence posts of the valle del chiese. it acted as a rampart with Forte carriola and was part of the barrage of lardaro. Built with rotating steel domes and ar-mour for cannons, it was disarmed before the war. it has now been re-stored and recovered.

the road barricade, a bold and im-posing building in pink limestone was one of the first permanent austrian forts to defend trento. the exhibition area inside has seve-ral multi-media installations and explanatory panels offering visitors the coordinates of the Great War and a complete overview of the for-tification system of trentino.

Built in the 19th century, between 1860 and 1861, Forte strino guarded the road from vermiglio to Passo del tonale. disarmed during the Great War because it was inadequate, the fort was then seriously damaged by collectors of scrap weaponry. today, thanks to a restoration project, it is an educational venue and exhibition area.

the fort is a remarkable example of military engineering, carved into the rock. in a certain sense, it is unique and the forerunner of the second World War underground bunkers. the fort, still incomplete when the war broke out, was in-tended to prevent any advance of italian forces from the Pian delle Fugazze.

the fort, situated to the south of the village of nago, along the old road to torbole, on a rocky spur jut-ting out towards lake Garda, was built with two floors and a double line of cannon posts it now houses a restaurant.

the lagorai is, perhaps, still the most mysterious mountain range in trentino. the ecomuseum is situ-ated on its southern side, covering an area that includes the munici-palities of carzano, telve, telve di sopra and torcegno. Whichever direction you take to arrive in trentino, you

will find a castle to welcome you. imposing crenellated

walls, high and sometimes daring locations, square shapes

blending in with elegant renaissance lines. castles are

testimony of a land used as a crossroads for travel, the

essential link between kingdoms, worlds and cultures.

they have changed over time from mainly military use to

centres of power, and later residences. today, they are

treasure troves of objets d’art, weapons and furnishings

that recount the history and atmospheres of bygone eras.

castel Beseno is the largest forti-fied complex in trentino. of medi-eval origin, it was used for defence due to its strategic position and its solid walls. this genuine floating ship, overlooking the vallagarina, is a now museum that hosts cultural events and historical re-enact-ments.

Perched on a rock overlooking the Giudicarie region, the castle looks austere and impressive. it had the task of guarding this area of tren-tino for the Prince Bishops, but it soon became a noble residence. its interior houses sculpted decora-tions, fine frescoes, refined furni-ture and utensil collections.

castello di avio, a splendid me-dieval fort, is immediately visible when you arrive in trentino from the south.
