Düsseldorf:
Competence in Life Sciences
Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and center of the BioRiver
biotech cluster in the Rhineland. More than 50 life science companies as well
as numerous suppliers and service providers operate in the Düsseldorf region.
Düsseldorf’s Heinrich Heine University is the hothouse of Germany’s biotech industry. Several big players in the chemicals and pharmaceuticals industry, includ-ing Bayer, Henkel, Schwarz Pharma, Degussa and 3M, have their headquarters in the region.
Established Companies and Start-ups
Germany’s most successful biotech companies, such as Qiagen, Rhein Biotech, Evotec or NewLab BioQuality, originate in Düsseldorf. More than 50 life science com-panies have settled here, many of which are Japanese, American or British enterprises.
Düsseldorf is centrally located in Germany and in the heart of Europe.
Life sciences – research for life. This means exploiting advances in biotechnology responsibly in the interest of people, animals and nature at large.

Research
Düsseldorf ’s Heinrich Heine University is renowned for its strong research capacity. Other important re-search institutions in Düsseldorf include the German Diabetes Research Institute, the Institute for Environ-mental Medical Research and the Biological-Medical Research Center.
Life Science Centers
The Life Science Center Düsseldorf is located next to the university campus and offers space for start-ups and established companies. A second technology center is dedicated to health research and product develop-ment.
Patent Law
When it comes to patent cases, Düsseldorf has Europe’s most important and, after Washington D.C., the world’s second most important patent court. Not surprisingly, therefore, the city is home to a multitude of judges and attorneys specialized in patent law. In addition, the Center for Intellectual Property Law, a compe-tence center for bio patent law, serves as a contact for companies and patent attorneys.

Professional Training in the Dual System
Germany’s dual system of acquiring professional trai-ning both in school and on the job is held up as an example worldwide. Each year, examinations are held by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Aachen, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Neuss for (2004):
•
40 biology laboratory assistants•
270 chemical laboratory assistants•
85 junior chemical workers•
510 chemistry technicians•
15 pharmacy techniciansVocational College Programs
In the BioRiver region, training as biological-technical assistant (BTA), chemical-technical assistant (CTA) or pharmaceutical-technical assistant (PTA) is offered in Düsseldorf, Hilden, Cologne and Aachen. In 2004, the colleges were attended by:
•
350 BTAs•
337 CTAs•
91 PTAsDüsseldorf ’s Advantage:
Highly Qualified Human Resources
One of the most compelling reasons for settling here is the number of
well-trained personnel available. When it comes to placing students into employment,
Düsseldorf ranks second nationwide. Each year, several thousand students
take their final exams in life science-related subjects in NRW.
Every year, several thousand students take their exams in life science-related subjects at 12 universities and six universities of applied sciences in NRW. Five cities in the BioRiver region currently train nearly 1,000 BTAs, CTAs and PTAs, and vocational colleges train several hundred biological-technical and chemical-technical assistants annually.
Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences
The universities and universities of applied sciences in the BioRiver region provide education in biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, biochemistry, chemis-try, medicine, molecular biology, pharmacy, bioengi-neering, nanotechnology and other sciences.
Each year, examinations are held in the BioRiver region for:
•
More than 640 biologists and bioengineers•
More than 260 chemists and chemical engineers•
Around 1,500 physicians•
Some 150 pharmacists•
Some 15 biochemists/biomedical engineers1,000 laboratory personnel and several hundred biological-technical, pharmaceutical-technical and chemical-technical assistants are trained in the region each year.

The technologies include tissue engineering and stem cell therapy as well as bioinformatics and gene expression profiling.
Oligonucleotid synthesis, analysis, process development and the production of pharmaceutical materials in accordance with WHO-GMP are only some of the services offered. The Aachen/Jülich region completes the range with expertise in bioprocess engineering. Enabling technologies are an important field of acti-vity in this region which is home to some of the world market leaders in their respective segment, notably Qiagen, Miltenyi and Amaxa.
Drug-developing companies such as Biofrontera, Coley Pharmaceuticals and Paion – which was listed on the stock exchange at the beginning of 2005 – all have ex-tremely advanced product pipelines. Other compa-nies, Rhein Biotech and Orthogen for example, have already earned market success with their products. Some major players in the German pharmaceuticals and chemicals scene, such as Bayer, Grünenthal, Schwarz Pharma, Madaus, Lanxess, Henkel or Cognis, have established production and research facilities in the BioRiver region, making it one of Europe’s prime
locations for pharmaceuticals and chemicals. www.bioriver.de/region_bioriver/companies.php
