We offer a variety of sermons at our Sunday morning services this term. We welcome the College Visitor the Bishop of Lincoln, to preach at the Confirmation Eucharist and the Bishop of Manchester, himself a Kingsman, will give The Sermon Before the University with the title ‘Theology, Place and Belonging: from the Book of Leviticus to the Streets of Salford’.

The series ‘Women of Spirit’ continues and has something of a royal theme with sermons about the Old Testament figure Queen Esther by Christina Rees CBE, together with a sermon about our reigning Monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second by the Dean of Birmingham, and one on Queen Elizabeth the First by the Chaplain. Our ordinand, Calum Zuckert, will speak about Josephine Butler, a most remarkable social reformer, and the Dean will talk about Julian of Norwich, mystic and theologian.

The Dean of Peterhouse will be offering a special sermon to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the publication by Erasmus of the New Testament in Greek, together with a Latin translation and commentary. This was an important text for Luther, and the sermon will help set the scene for various other sermons and events through which we will be commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in future terms.

The full sequence of preachers this term is as follows: 24 April Christina Rees CBE Dean of Little Gidding

On Sunday mornings we make a collection to support two charities which have been suggested by members of the College community. Last term’s Sunday morning collections raised £632 for the local charity ‘STARS’, £680 for the international Sant’ Egidio Community and our collection on Good Friday for Christian Aid raised £1000. This term they are ‘Just Love’, a Cambridge-based Christian charity which involves students in action for social justice; and Parkinson’s UK, the national charity. At all other services and at Saturday evening recitals, you are invited to support the work of the Chapel and Choir by giving to the retiring collection. Please use the envelope provided, including your details if you are a UK taxpayer, so that we can benefit from Gift Aid: this way the government adds 25% to your donation. If you would prefer to make a donation at a later date, please either send a cheque to the Dean, the Revd Dr Stephen Cherry, King’s College, Cambridge, CB2 1ST; or email dean@kings.cam.ac.uk for information on ways to make significant or ongoing contributions to our work.

RE S T O R A T I O N O F T H E CH A P E L O R G A N

The Chapel organ is undergoing its most significant restoration since the 1960s. Today’s instrument remains fundamentally as it was designed to be at the time of its rebuilding in the mid-1930s, but after many years of frequent use it was becoming unreliable; major work is now being undertaken to ensure that it continues to function optimally for the next generation.

The restoration is being carried out during the first nine months of this year. The pipes were removed for cleaning and repair in January and February, and they return during the course of the Easter Term. While the organ case has been empty, surveying, cleaning and remedial structural work has been taking place. The organ is expected to be ready for use again in September.

For more information about the organ and the restoration, please visit our website at www.kings.cam.ac.uk.

MU S I C

This term we continue the series of concerts after Saturday evensong which replace the usual organ recitals. The series has once again been organised by the organ scholars, Richard Gowers and Tom Etheridge. The first, on Saturday 23 April, features Prime Brass playing music associated with Shakespeare, marking the 400th anniversary of his death in 1616. The Choir marks this by singing one of the Shakespeare settings of Vaughan Williams as the Introit at Evensong. As part of the Cambridge Early MusicFestival of the Voice, the music of Palestrina is specially featured on Sunday 15 May. On Sunday 29 May the Choir gives the first performance of a newly commissioned setting by Ian Stephens of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poemPied Beauty. This has been commissioned by Nick and Eleanor Steinitz in memory of the their son, Chris. Nick (KC 1954) is a former choral scholar. There is instrumental accompaniment at Evensong on Sunday 5 June. At the Sung Eucharist on Sunday 12 June, there will be a complete performance of theBell Massby Julian Anderson (KC 1992). The Choir will sing this the following Sunday at the Aldeburgh Festival. On Saturday 25 June we shall welcome members of the Musicians’ Company with Keith Maries (KC 1963). Music is by former members of the company, Elgar, Berkeley and Howells. As is traditional, the leaving choristers have chosen the music for the last Saturday of the summer, and the graduating organ scholar and choral scholars that for the final Sunday Evensong. The Choir is joined by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for a Haydn concert on Tuesday 5 July, before appearing at the Proms and making a tour in the Far East later in the summer.

In addition to our choral services, more intimate acts of worship are offered each weekday in one of the side chapels. Normally, the Eucharist is celebrated at 12.30 p.m. If there is a Sung Eucharist in the evening, the 12.30 p.m. service that day will be the Office of Readings, at which we hear and reflect on passages both from the Bible and from the great spiritual writers. There will be signage in Chapel each day specifying where these services are being held.

RE C O R D I N G

Please note that the use of cameras, recording equipment, video cameras and mobile phones is not permitted in Chapel. Some services and recitals are recorded each week for webcasts. You can listen to these throughout the year on the King’s College website.

SE R V I C E LI S T

Copies of this booklet are available for sale at the King’s Visitor Centre, please leave this one for others to use. Braille and large print service booklets are available from the Dean’s Verger for Evensong and Sung Eucharist services.

CH O R A L SE R V I C E S

Services are normally sung by King’s College Choir on Sundays and from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King’s Voices, the College’s mixed voice choir. Exceptions are listed.

KI N G’S CO L L E G E CH O I R CDS

Choir recordings are available from the King’s College website and from the King’s College Visitor Centre during the day. By purchasing the Choir’s CDs from King’s College, you are directly supporting the activities of the Chapel and Choir.

CH O R I S T E R S A T KI N G’S

If you have a son in Years 2, 3 or 4 at school who likes singing and is enthusiastic about music, we encourage you to get in touch with Caroline in the Choir Office, who can tell you about the benefits that come with being a chorister, and answer your questions about life in King’s College Choir and at King’s College School. Please email her at choir@kings.cam.ac.uk or telephone 01223 331224.

The next formal auditions for choristerships will be held on Saturday 24 September 2016, but enquiries are welcome all the year round.
