Last Friday in our school assembly, Senior Constable Maire Froud spoke to students about the Harmful Digital Communications Act. She described ‘harmful’ as anything online involving physical threats, names calling, disrespectful or upsetting messages, bullying and putdowns. Maire explained that this also includes images and warned that once you press send then you have no control over where it goes. Receiving or on-sending harmful images or statements is also breaking the law.
Her advice to students was that before sending something we should take a breath and show it to someone we trust. John Parsons visits our school every couple of years and his important advice is “do not press send unless you are happy for your parents to see it, your grandparents to see it and your future employer to see it.”
The other big message from Maire was “when you see something that’s not okay then it’s not okay to just stand back.”
Sergeant Brian Ennis spoke to our senior students about host responsibilities and drivers’ licences. Pink Shirt Day last Friday was an overwhelming success here at Waimate High School. This day is celebrated annually around the globe. Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day works to create schools, workplaces, communities and whānau where everyone feels safe, valued and respected. Our students were supportive of this important message with students really getting into
the message and the bake sale proved to be very popular.
Overall the mufti day donations and bake sale raised $700 for the Mental Health Foundation. A big thank you to our students and parents who supported this initiative by providing the yummy baking.
At our Board of Trustees meeting this week our Board Chair Bryson Hargreaves, Principal Janette Packman and PPTA Branch Chair Emma Porter signed @nzppta’s Promise to New Teachers. By signing this document, Waimate High School commits to supporting new secondary teachers at the start of their careers. The Prefects encourage students to become involved in this year’s World Vision 40 Hour Famine and an impressive number of students have put their names forward for this.
Prefect Assembly this week was entertaining for all. Our Good Sorts this month who display our school values with passion and pride, are :
Ashley Guy – for constantly helping her peers and teachers without being asked.
Tate Hargreaves – for stepping up and going outside his comfort zone taking on a leadership role in the welcome powhiri for the rugby exchange. He accepted the challenge without hesitation, demonstrating our school value of responsibility and willingness to give everything a go.
Kate Melville – for being an amazing ambassador for our school who can always be relied on. We are proud to say she is a student of Waimate High School.
Well done to Mr Liddy and Mr Schumacher for taking on the Prefects’ Tik Tok challenge (without practice).
We were privileged and excited to have William Pike spend Thursday afternoon with us, sharing his story and giving important advice. During the afternoon Year 7 and 8 students, along with all current and past William Pike students met with William Pike talking with him about the Challenge and his recent adventures. After school current and past WPC students carried out community service at the community gardens.
William attributed his successes to being prepared to step outside his comfort zone. His big advice to
students was to encourage them to do that also. This will mean we are being the best that we can be. Key aspects of ensuring we achieve the goals we set ourselves are to:
• Find what we are passionate about • Build strong whanau and teams • Never underestimate yourself
Waimate High School has participated in the WPCA program for nine years and during that time many students have benefitted from challenging themselves in new ways.
In the evening William spoke at a community event and it was great to see so many members of our community coming to hear his inspiring messages. A big thank you to the South Canterbury Rural Support Trust for making this happen.
Showquest
Last Thursday on the 18th of May, myself, 20 other students and 4 adults travelled to the Christchurch Town Hall to take part in Showquest. We had been planning and preparing our performance for about 8 weeks before the day with lunchtime, after school and weekend rehearsals. On the day we were all super excited so the nearly 3 hour trip up passed by very fast.
One key highlight from the first part of the day was being able to yell out our ‘We’re Waimos’ chant and get a round of applause from the other schools there. We also took part in ZM’s Silent disco and the Tik Tok Challenge Showquest set, which were lots of fun. By the time 5 o’clock rolled around and they drew the order to perform we felt more nerves and excitement all at the same time!! We were chosen to perform 8th so we had 4 hours to get ready, watch the other schools on the livestream and have our tea. When we were called backstage we had lots of butterflies but all agreed to go out there and have lots of fun because we had worked so hard to get to that point.
After our performance we went down to watch the livestream with the other schools and were greeted to a round of applause from them which was pretty awesome. After prizegiving we got on the bus and travelled home from 10.30pm till 1am. Nearly all of us fell asleep so I'd say it was a very successful but exhausting day. We are hoping to perform here in Waimate so keep an eye out for news of that !!
Sports Council
This year has been very exciting for the Sports Council! Our most recent event was the Colour Run at Cross Country, which was loved by not only students but also the teachers! We have been working alongside the Year 8 PALs group to organise and run lunchtime activities. We have had the opportunity to run 'Fitness Friday' where everyone is welcome to come along to the gym at lunchtime for a workout. As a council, we are looking forward to running more and we are very excited for the next house event, 5 Aside.

Waimate High School Sports Council 2021 Otago Tertiary Open Day
We were delighted to be able to take a group of interested Year 12 and 13 students down to the annual Otago Tertiary Open day on Monday 24th May 2021. This is a day where students and their families, teachers, careers advisors, can all come together and experience the amazing opportunities on offer at Otago Polytechnic and the University of Otago. The range of programmes on offer through both Tertiary providers is outstanding and our students had a wonderful day visiting areas of interest. For parents of future students coming into Years 12 and 13, it is important to note that the Otago Tertiary open days are a two-day event, usually near the end of May each year and is over a Sunday and a Monday. The Monday event is pretty much like Sunday except it includes the University expo, stalls, and offers slightly more options to view. Some prefer going on both days. Coming up
on Thursday 17th June 2021 from 7pm to 9pm, both the Otago Polytechnic and the University of Otago will be hosting an event in Timaru in the Summit Room in the landing services building (above Speights Ale House, Timaru). This is open to parents and students who wish to find out more or are intending on studying at either OP or UoA in 2022. Well worth going along to this evening.
This year, following on from a successful event in 2021, the University of Otago will offer a virtual open day on Thursday 29th July 2021 from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm. If you have any questions, please contact me. [email protected] or visit the websites https://www.op.ac.nz/ or https://www.otag o.ac.nz/
At the recent 2021 Otago Tertiary Open Day, students were able to view topics, subjects, classes, majors and minors, bachelors, interests, and a wide range of other selections at either the Otago Polytechnic (OP) or the University of Otago.
I got to see and experience first-hand the student lifestyle. I looked at Theatre Studies which was very hands-on learning, I liked that it had lots of fun exercises and the explanation was thorough around the whole arts side of the University of Otago. One of the best things about the day is that we could choose what we wanted to see. We explored small ideas and find out more. I also like architecture. I found out Otago polytechnic offered a bachelor's degree and soon a Masters. I got to see some beautiful pieces of student work as well as the spacious studio areas where students have a space of their own. This programme is more one on one and practical. I spent my time wisely looking at my interests and hobbies which really makes the whole day helpful for those wanting to go to Otago University or Otago Polytechnic. By Andrew Masayon.
My friends and I visited the Electrical engineering department at the Otago Polytechnic. We found out the programmes of study on offer. One course of study involves a pre-trade course which is good for students who have come straight from school and have little experience. The other options for study on offer are a New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Electrical Engineering) which can pathway into a Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree. We also found out that there are immediate job opportunities once you have completed your qualification and the level of student debt is minimal. by Jack Farrell.
