SENIOR STUDIES

Students can gain their Year 11 and

12 qualifications and a vocational

certificate in a flexible, personal

and mature learning environment.

Our Senior Studies and Vocational

Pathways program allows students

to achieve their Queensland Certificate

of Education (QCE) in two to three

years, while keeping their options

open for their chosen qualification

and Overall Position (OP) score.

ADULT TERTIARY

PREPARATION

The ATP course is for those who wish

to gain or improve their qualifications

for tertiary entrance. ATP is a

recognised as a Year-12 alternative

that’s ideal for adults who’ve been

away from formal study for some

time. It’ll allow you to apply to QTAC

for a tertiary ranking on completion

and help you get the entrance

pre-requisites in Maths, English

and Science, giving you access to

university or other tertiary education.

I decided to go to TAFE Queensland when I didn’t meet

the eligibility criteria to get into the course I wanted to

do at university. I thought going to TAFE Queensland

would be a second-rate experience, but I couldn’t

have been happier with my time there. The course

was engaging and the content delivered in an easily

digestible format. The teachers and staff were genuinely

interested in helping me succeed and providing me with

opportunities to gain hands-on experiences. I’ve moved

on to university and am proud that TAFE Queensland

has given me the best head start that any student

could hope for.

WHAT IS AN OP?

An Overall Position (OP) is a number between 1 and 25

calculated by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment

Authority (QCCA) on completion of Year 12 for students who

complete at least 20 semester units of QCAA subjects and

sit for the Queensland Core Skills Test. Students must also

carry three subjects over the two years. The OP decides

tertiary entrance either to university or TAFE diploma

programs. The highest possible score is OP 1.

WHAT IS A QTAC SELECTION RANK?

A selection rank is a number on a scale from 1 to 99

(99 being the highest) and comes from tables or lists

of conversions called schedules. A selection rank or

set of ranks is allocated to each of your qualifications,

including tertiary study. If you have more than one

qualification, you are usually allocated more than one

selection rank.

Associate Degree in Civil Engineering, at our South Bank campus. Some of our higher education courses are run

in partnership with universities and some are TAFE Queensland qualifications.

a qualification based on the skills and experience

you have picked up from previous learnings, work or

industry experience (paid or unpaid), volunteering and

partially completed studies. Many of our qualifications

have RPL opportunities.

Through our alliances with some of the country’s top universities and other higher education providers, many of our

graduates are recognised for the quality of eduction and training they receive at TAFE Queensland Brisbane. In many

instances, you can seamlessly enter into a university degree course after completing one of our diploma or associate

degree courses without reapplying through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). This is called a dual

award. In most cases you get at least a year’s academic credit towards a related degree.

DUAL AWARD

You can choose from over 80

combined courses (dual awards),

which you apply for through a single

QTAC application. You complete

the diploma at TAFE Queensland

Brisbane then go directly to

university to take up a place that

has already been reserved and

guaranteed for you. You don’t

have to reapply through QTAC.

In most cases you get up to a

year’s academic credit towards

your degree.

A dual award will give you the

practical, real-world skills you need

to move into the workforce straight

away. Many of our dual award

graduates chose to begin their

careers after completing their TAFE

Queensland Brisbane qualification,

and pursue their university studies

part-time. This means you can

earn while you learn.

CREDIT TRANSFER

You can choose to just study

a single qualification at TAFE

Queensland Brisbane. Later, if you

decide to go to university, you can

apply for academic credit towards

a degree in a similar field. (E.g.

complete a Diploma of Information

Technology and go on to a Bachelor

of Information Technology).

The credit is pre-negotiated on your

behalf, but you still have to apply

through QTAC to gain entry into

the degree. Once admitted, you’ll

be given the credit on application.

Often this credit is as much as one

year of the degree.

PERFORMANCE LEVEL

ASSESSMENT (PLA)

Many of our diplomas and advanced

diplomas have subjects (also called

competencies) that have Performance

Level Assessment (PLA) as a

supplementary reporting system.

PLA is a form of graded assessment

and an additional way of rating

certain aspects of student

achievement. If you demonstrate

an advanced level of performance,

you will be awarded a Credit,

and a Distinction is awarded for

exceptional level of performance.

PLA has a number of advantages:

• QTAC converts PLA results into

a Grade Point Average (GPA),

which can then improve your

Selection Rank (OP equivalent).

• If you’re disappointed with your

high school results, you have

an opportunity to enhance

your OP through PLA when

studying a diploma or advanced

diploma. You may be able to get

a rank that is as good as OP 5

equivalent, opening you up to a

wider range of university courses.

• Evidence of additional effort and

performance can enhance your

employment prospects.

A common pathway for our students is to move from

full-time study at TAFE Queensland Brisbane to

part-time employment combined with part-part-time university

study. For example, many of our Associate Degree

in Civil Engineering students complete two years of

full-time study at TAFE Queensland Brisbane, then go

onto a cadetship with one of our industry partners,

while articulating into the second year of a university

engineering degree. This means our students can work

in their chosen industry, getting experience and earning

a salary, while completing their university studies.
