Faith Formation Information

I have an important message regarding registration for Faith Formation Classes for the 2021-2022 school year.

Normally, we would register new students in January and current students in April. However, due to the pandemic, that is not possible.

Faith Formation Registration for new and returning students will be held from Monday June 21 through Thursday, July 1, 2021.

In order to register for Faith Formation classes, the family must have been registered in the parish on or before January 21, 2021.

Additionally, the family must be consistently using the offertory envelopes provided to all registered parishioners or consistently using our online giving option. Consistent use of envelopes means at least twice each month. This means using envelopes on two different weekends. The consistent use of envelopes must continue throughout the entire time the student is registered in Faith Formation classes. This includes the summer months.

In order to register this June, a family must be consistently using envelopes or online giving in April, May and June of 2021. The office will confirm that envelopes have been received from the family on at least two occasions in April, May and June before a family can register for Faith Formation. The office will confirm that the family has continued to consistently use envelopes or online giving during the summer months before students will be able to begin classes in September. Families that do not meet these requirements will not be able to register for classes this year.

The offertory envelopes can be placed in the basket at Mass, placed in the drop box at the parish office or mailed to the parish office.

There is no required minimum amount for the donation. Each family must decide for themselves in accord with their conscience and ability.

A parish is a community of disciples. We are not a convenience store for the sacraments. Consistent use of envelopes or online giving demonstrates your commitment to the ministry of this parish. The fees for our Faith Formation program have not increased in many years. The fees cover only about twenty-five percent of the cost of the program for each student. While the use of envelopes or online giving demonstrates your commitment to your faith, the donation you make will help our parish continue the Faith Formation opportunities. We need the families of our parish to consistently participate in the parish offertory in order to continue to offer this important program.

MONTHLY YOUTH RETREAT

All parishioners in grades 8-12 are warmly invited to the Our Lady of Lourdes Monthly Youth Retreat! Since 2014, our youth have gathered for fun, fellowship, and

encouragement in their Christian faith. Our goal is to give young people a deeper understanding of the love of God and the beauty of his Church. Our usual schedule is to meet in the Multi-Purpose room at 3 p.m. on the 3rd Saturday of the month. After group study and snacks, we worship together at the 5 pm Mass. Then we eat dinner and participate in a fun activity, such as laser tag, bowling, paintball, and more. There is no cost to the participant, but we encourage donations to Our Lady of Lourdes.

Remaining dates this school year: May TBD. To join or

ask a question, please contact Kathleen Prevost

Repentance

“Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.” These are the words of Jesus from this weekend’s Gospel of Luke. Christ begins His ministry calling on people to repent and now He ends His ministry by telling His Apostles that they who are witnesses to His resurrection from the dead are now to preach repentance to all nations in the His divine name.

But what does it mean to repent? One definition of “Repentance”

says it is the activity of reviewing one's actions and feeling contrition or regret for past wrongs, which is accompanied by commitment to and actual actions that show and prove a change for the better. In Islam it is often defined as an action, turning away from self-serving activities and turning to God, to walk in his ways.

Repentance is a change in one’s life guided by changes in one’s mind about how we will live our lives and then living out that change in the actions we do that follow. The words “I am going to change my life” have to be followed up with actions depicting those changes. Words of repentance or change come easy – actions do not and it takes a real gut wrenching commitment to change how we live our lives. But with God’s grace, we can change. Hearts of stone can be melted into hearts of love and acceptance. Cold hearts of bitterness can be warmed to hearts of loving forgiveness.

We first must will changes in our lives and then take actions to make those concrete changes happen.

The two disciples on the Road to Emmaus were running away from Jerusalem – away from what certainly would be for them death or imprisonment until they met Jesus on the road and then recognized Him in the breaking of the bread. They return to Jerusalem with their hearts on fire and recount to the Apostles their encounter with the Risen Jesus. They all then experience Jesus in the upper room where the Apostles were hiding for fear of the authorities and Jesus speaks of preaching repentance to all nations.

If you struggle with sin as we all do, it is time to take that struggle to Jesus in the confessional and make a firm purpose of amendment to change the bad habits of sin we have developed into the good habits brought about by grace and the Sacraments.

We can look to Mary and the Saints to model our lives from. They show us true lives of love lived out every day. Jesus died to save us all from sin and death and rose again on Easter morning to show us the way to eternal life. Repentance or real change brings us closer to life eternal!

Blessings, Deacon Dave

Third Sunday of Easter Acts 3:13-15, 17-19

Peter said to the people: “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in

Pilate’s presence when he had decided to release him. You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses. Now I know, brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did; but God has thus brought to fulfillment what he had

announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer.

Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.”

1 Jn 2:1-5a

My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one. He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments. Those who say, “I know him,” but do not keep his commandments are liars, and the truth is not in them. But whoever keeps his word,

the love of God is truly perfected in him.

Lk 24:35-48

The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way, and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and

were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of

baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, “These are my words that I

spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses

and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand

the Scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise

from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be

preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these

things.”
