The Digital Millennium: Opportunities for Asian Media

New technologies, businesses and cultures driven by the flow of digital Information are emerging in the new millennium. They are changing how we work, play, Interact, experience and involve ourselves in various spheres of endeavor. The exciting and energizing digital revolution is helping shape our future. It is also pushing the development and growth of traditional and new media.

The AMIC 9™ Annual Conference set from June 29 to July 1,2000 in Singapore will look into what the digital revolution holds for Asian media and how managers and professionals in the communication industry can exploit the

improvements and new opportunities in the digital world.

Over 200 media practitioners and communication specialists from THE Asia- Padfic will gather for trie three-day event which will examine three streams, namely;

new technology, policy and social impact, covering the communication Industry in Asia. AMICs 8* Annual Conference from July 1-3,1999 in Chennai, India was an unqualified success. More participants are expected to attend next year's

conference because of Singapore's reputation as a communication hub and as a travel and tourist destination. The conference venue will be at the new Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, Singapore.

Among the topics to be taken up during the conference are the technology boom in the digital media, content alliandng in media, on-line journalism, new technology frontiers in entertainment and informative media, e-commerce, internet advertising, internet convergence, privacy, jurisdiction in the digital age, the WTO and media products, children and the internet and Asian societies in the digital world.

The Asian Media Information & Communication Centre (AMIC) is a major resource for communicators in the Asia-Padfic. A non-profit organization established In 1971, AMIC aims to help spearhead the development of media and

communications in the region.

Mr. Lim Swee Say, Minister of Communications & Information Technology Singapore, will inaugurate the 9

th

AMIC annual conference set on June 29-July 1, 2000 in Singapore. The conference theme is "The Digital Millennium: Opportunities for Asian Media."

Minister Lim is among 40 speakers who will discuss the digital technology boom in Asia's communication industry and how media managers and communication specialists in the region can exploit the opportunities in the digital world.

Among the confirmed speakers are Madanmohan Rao, Principal Consultant of Planet Asia in India, Reginald Chua, Editor-in-Chief of Asia Wall Street Journal, Taik-Sup Auh, President of Korean Cyber Communication Society, Graeth Granger, Deputy Chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Authority, Arun Mahizan, Deputy Director, Institute of Policy Studies of Singapore, Dr. Toh See Kiat, President of the Consumer Association of Singapore, Robert Lamb, Director of TVE of England, Mr Mukesh Patel, of Applitech Solution Ltd of India and Paul France, of CNBC Asia.

Over 200 media practitioners and communication specialists from the Asia-Pacific will gather for the three-day event which will examine three streams, namely: new technology, policy and social impact, covering the communication industry in Asia.

More participants are expected to attend this year's conference because of Singapore's reputation as a communication hub and as well as a travel and tourist destination. The conference venue will be at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, Singapore.

M E D L I B : An Electronic Me-

dia Library Management Soft- ware which automates catalogu- ing, classifying and storage and retrieval of Audio and Video Programmes include stockshots.

Centres producing audio and video programmes, are faced with a daily problem of inventory of tapes and other non-print materi- als, storage and retrieval of programmes and stock shots for capsuling and production. It is essential for any production cen- tre which cries out for computer- ization and yet, there seems to be no standard software for ready use.

CEMCA in collaboration with EMPC, IGNOU had taken the ini- tiative to create a specially de- signed software for non print au- dio and video resources and com- missioned INFOTEL, India to do the task. Called MEDLIB, this software is a specially designed software on a Windows platform, fully Y2K compliant, easy to use, enables search on large number of parameters, from title, content, subject, producer, scriptwriter, etc.

It also enables classification and cataloguing of stock shots, helps your media librarian in classifi- cation of programmes, inventory, issue and retrieval, preparation of progress reports and helps your producer to search for stock shots and determine quality of stored material. The software is priced at Rs 20, 000 for educational in- stitutions. For your evaluation, M/
