The University of Indianapolis offers students a number of opportunities to demonstrate prior learning

experience through examination. Three different types of testing programs are available:

National testing programs designed for the purpose of awarding credit

University tests designed for the purpose of awarding credit

University tests designed for the purpose of determining proficiency or placement

The School for Adult Learning Office disseminates testing information about these testing programs and

administers the on-campus testing programs. The Office of the Registrar, using the prescribed guidelines and

the advice of the deans and department chairs, awards credit.

General guidelines for the granting of credit by examination at the University of Indianapolis are as follows:

1. National or university examinations may be taken prior to or during enrollment at the University of

Indianapolis.

2. Credit that a student has been awarded by examination is recorded on his or her permanent record during

his or her initial enrollment (new student) or at the time of testing (currently enrolled student).

3. No letter grade is assigned for credit awarded by examination; therefore, this credit is not used in

calculating a student’s grade point average.

4. The student pays a proctor fee to the University of Indianapolis to register for a CLEP or DSST exam, and

a test administration fee to CLEP or DSST.

5. The student may not take an examination in a subject in which he or she has had a sequential course.

6. Dual credit will not be awarded: The student may not take an examination in a subject in which he or she

has already taken the equivalent college-level course and received a passing grade.

7. The student may not take an examination in any subject to remove or replace a letter grade in an

equivalent college-level course completed at, or transferred into, the University of Indianapolis.

National Testing Programs

The five national credit-by-examination programs in which the University of Indianapolis participates are:

College Board Advanced Placement Program (AP)

Educational Testing Services College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Educational Testing Service Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DSST)

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Excelsior College Examination (ECE)

The faculty sets general guidelines for participation in each of these programs (see above) and the deans and

department chairs determine which tests will be accepted and which UIndy courses are equivalent to them.

The CLEP and DSST programs are administered through the School for Adult Learning; the Excelsior College

Examination is administered at national testing sites; the Advanced Placement Tests & IB exams are

administered through high schools. Individual testing programs are described on the next page.

Advanced Placement Program. The College Board Advanced Placement Program tests are administered

annually at high schools that offer Advanced Placement courses. Scores for these examinations are sent to

the University of Indianapolis at the request of the student. Guidelines for awarding of credit are included by

subject area beginning on page 3. Further information about AP exams is available through one’s high

school guidance office.

CLEP. The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations are administered on computer on

Tuesdays and Wednesdays, by appointment only, at the School for Adult Learning office at the University of

Indianapolis on a first-come, first-served basis. Scores are sent to the University of Indianapolis at the

request of the student, and credit is granted for tests on which the student receives the minimum passing

score. There are currently 35 CLEP examinations on the list of exams for which the University of Indianapolis

grants credit. Credit is awarded based upon passing scores recommended by the American Council on

Education (see http://salstudent.uindy.edu/testlist.php).

DSST. The DSST exams, originally developed for the military but now available for use at colleges and

universities, are administered on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays at the School for Adult Learning office at

the University of Indianapolis on a first-come, first-served basis. Scores are sent to the University of

Indianapolis at the request of the student, and credit is granted for tests on which the student receives the

minimum passing score. Credit is awarded based upon passing scores recommended by the American

Council on Education (see http://salstudent.uindy.edu/testlist.php).

IB The International Baccalaureate diploma programme is currently offered at a variety of secondary

institutions around the world. Scores for these examinations are sent to the University of Indianapolis at the

request of the student. Guidelines for awarding of credit are included by subject area on page 9. Further

information about IB is available through http://ibo.org.

EXCELSIOR COLLEGE EXAMINATION. The Excelsior College Examinations are available through the

web site, http://www.excelsior.edu. Once a student has registered for an examination through Excelsior

College and received the "Authorization To Test" letter from the College, the student can schedule a testing

appointment electronically via the Prometric Web site. These examinations are not offered at the University

of Indianapolis, nor do we register students for these exams. However, the University of Indianapolis does

accept credit for these exams as listed in this document.

University of Indianapolis Exams Designed for Purpose of Awarding Credit

The University of Indianapolis grants credit for a number of faculty-written exams administered through the

individual schools or through the Registrar’s Office. The general guidelines listed above apply to any locally

developed and administered exam.

University of Indianapolis Examinations Designed for Purpose of Determining

Proficiency or Placement

Exams for proficiency are offered for English and Mathematics. Exams for foreign language placement are

offered through the Modern Language Department. No credit is awarded for successful completion of these

exams. Music auditions are conducted by the Music Department.

For further information about any of these examinations contact: Registrar’s Office
