First Presbyterian Church

Established 1988 PCA

Transformed by the grace of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection on our behalf, we are delighting in the supremacy of God in all things as we

reach up to Him in worship, reach in to one another with teaching and care, and reach out to the world with Christ.

So that in everything Christ might be preeminent. Colossians 1:18

Prelude

Greeting We have gathered to praise our gracious God. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow!

Preparation for Worship

This is the day that you have made, Lord. Help us to rejoice and be glad!

Remind us of the privileges we enjoy as your people: to come to you in these moments,

to confess our sins,

to receive forgiveness and give it, to pray and sing and listen, to renew our fainting spirits, to rest in all your promises. Open our eyes to see you, Lord. Open our ears to hear your Word. Visit us through your Holy Spirit,

and help us to delight today in your gifts of grace. Amen.

Call to Worship Psalm 19

1 The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

2 Day to day pours out speech,

and night to night reveals knowledge.

3 There is no speech, nor are there words,

whose voice is not heard.

4 Their voice goes out through all the earth,

and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,

5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,

and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.

6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,

and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul;

(3)

8 the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;

9 the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;

the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;

sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;

in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors?

Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;

let them not have dominion over me!

Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Prayer of Adoration

*Hymn of Praise Thank and Praise Jehovah’s Name p.8 Thank and Praise Jehovah’s Name; for His mercies, firm and sure,

From eternity the same, to eternity endure.

Praise Him, ye who know His love! Praise Him from the depths beneath! Praise Him in the heights above! Praise your Maker all that breathe!

Let the ransomed thus rejoice, gathered out of every land, As the people of His choice, plucked from the destroyer’s hand.

Praise Him, ye who know His love! Praise Him from the depths beneath! Praise Him in the heights above! Praise your Maker all that breathe! For His truth and mercy stand, past, and present, and to be,

Like the years of His right hand, like His own eternity.

Praise Him, ye who know His love! Praise Him from the depths beneath! Praise Him in the heights above! Praise your Maker all that breathe! *New Testament Scripture 1 Peter 1:3-7

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in

heaven for you, 5 who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready

to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if

necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your

*Hymn of Praise To God be the Glory #55 To God be the glory, great things he has done!

So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, Who yielded his life an atonement for sin, And opened the life-gate that we may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father thro' Jesus the Son,

And give him the glory, great things he has done! O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood!

To ev'ry believer the promise of God; The vilest offender who truly believes,

That moment from Jesus forgiveness receives. (chorus) Great things he has taught us, great things he has done, And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;

But purer and higher and greater will be

Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. (chorus)

Profession of Faith Westminster Shorter Catechism Q. 102 What do we pray for in the second petition?

A. In the second petition, which is, “Thy kingdom come,” we pray that Satan’s kingdom may be destroyed; and that the kingdom of grace may be advanced, our-selves and others brought into it, and kept in it, and that the kingdom of glory may be hastened.

Q. 103 What do we pray for in the third petition?

Song of Profession Hear My Words p.9 Hear my words, O gracious Lord, to my thoughts attentive be;

Hear my cry, my King, my God, I will make my prayer to Thee. With the morning light, O Lord, Thou shalt hear my voice arise, And expectant I will bring prayer as morning sacrifice.

Thou art holy, O my God, Thou delightest not in sin;

Evil shall not dwell with Thee, nor the proud Thy favor win. In the fullness of Thy grace to Thy house I will repair;

Bowing toward Thy holy place, lost in love I worship there.

Prayer of Confession and Intercession

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

*Assurance of Pardon 1 Peter 2:4-7a

4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and

precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a

holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it

stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious,

and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious.

*Hymn of Response I Know Whom I Have Believed #705 I know not why God's wondrous grace to me he has made known,

Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love redeemed me for his own.

But "I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able To keep that which I've committed unto him against that day."

I know not how this saving faith to me he did impart,

Nor how believing in his Word wrought peace within my heart. (chorus) I know not how the Spirit moves, convincing men of sin,

Revealing Jesus through the Word, creating faith in him. (chorus) I know not what of good or ill may be reserved for me,

Of weary ways or golden days, before his face I see. (chorus) I know not when my Lord may come, at night or noonday fair, Nor if I'll walk the vale with him, or "meet him in the air." (chorus)

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Sermon Peter 2:13-17; 3:8-12 Pastor Andy Aikens Subjection and Suffering

*Song of Praise O Great God p.10 O great God of highest heaven, occupy my lowly heart;

Own it all and reign supreme, conquer every rebel power; Let no vice or sin remain that resists Your holy war.

You have loved and purchased me make me Yours forevermore. I was blinded by my sin, had no ears to hear Your voice.

Did not know Your love within, had no taste for heaven’s joys. Then Your Spirit gave me life, opened up Your Word to me— Through the gospel of Your Son gave me endless hope and peace. Help me now to live a life that’s dependent on Your grace;

Keep my heart and guard my soul from the evils that I face; *You are worthy to be praised with my every thought and deed— O great God of highest heaven glorify Your Name through me!

*Benediction From I Peter 2:9 and 4:7-11

An opportunity for women during the summer: Proverbs 31:25 describes a godly woman as one who "can laugh at the days to come." Some of you may say that sounds like an odd description, especially if your current circumstances are painful and all you can see in the future seems bleak. However, there is a gem in the proverb that can sustain us and cause us all to have hope in the One who knows about all our trials. If you'd like to hear from a sister in Christ who has wrestled with the meaning of this text in light of her present realities and found the sovereignty of God a bedrock for her faith, then join a small group of women to read and discuss together
