High
Network & MPIO Overview
iSCSI Switch2 (Ex. 192.168.20.X) iSCSI Switch1
(Ex. 192.168.10.X)
Corp Firewall (Port 443)
Corp LAN (Ex. 10.1.10.XX) Multiple, simultaneous paths from applications to storage MPIO on host couples with IP address failover between controllers HA against network and switch failures. Path failures to host do NOT cause failovers
MPIO on host load balances between
IP addresses within a controller
Best Practices For Network
Designate at least one port for use with the management interface
When using multiple VLANs, disable iSCSI for the management interface
Ensure that your StorSimple device has a dedicated 40 Mbps bandwidth (or more)
available at all times. This bandwidth should not be shared with any other applications
Configure QoS to enable variable throttling
Use a dedicate switch for iSCSI traffic or separate VLAN (if using a shared switch)
iSCSI should be on the storage network and it is not recommended to route the iSCSI
traffic
To access azure, the firewall should allow HTTPS port (443)
If external DNS server is used, ports for DNS should be open
If proxy is used, connection to proxytest.storsimple.com should be available
Best Practices For MPIO
Each iSCSI host should have more than one
network interface card (NIC) and be connected to more than one network switch for physical data path redundancy.
The appropriate MPIO policies (round robin,
failover, etc.) should be selected based on the
desired behavior across the multiple network paths
Ensure the same interface on each controller are
on the same VLAN
No NIC teaming on application servers for iSCSI
Ensure the MGMT interface is on a separate
network
Note: MPIO is an
optional feature and not installed by default on the Windows Server. This feature can be
Local, Zone, and Geo Redundant Storage Options

Tiering
Best Practice For Optimal Tiering
For index search or virus scan applications:
Configure incremental operations. New data still on the local tiers will be scanned and data will not be brought back from the cloud tier
Disable automatically configured full scan operations and ensure the correct search filter and settings are configured so that only the intended file types get scanned, i.e. JPEG, GIF and TIFF files should not be scanned
Ensure that there is consistent read performance. If the appliance gets to a point where the “working-set” of data is exceeding available on-premise storage capacity then performance will be impacted. Contact StorSimple
Read/Write throughput
for
storage tiers
Maximum client read/write throughput (when served from the SSD tier)*
920/720 MB/s with a single
10GbE network interface Up to 2x with MPIO and two network interfaces. Maximum client read/write
throughput (when served from
the HDD tier)* 120/250 MB/s
Maximum client read/write throughput (when served from
the cloud tier)* 11/41 MB/s
Read throughput depends on clients generating and
maintaining sufficient I/O queue depth.

Deduplication &
Compression
Deduplication And Compression
Deduplication is done at the block
level; across all volumes within a cloud account No duplicated blocks between snapshots Optimizes the utilization of SSD capacity, improving performance Minimizes size of data transfer and storage in Azure. Also, reduces data
download and recovery times Fingerprints are content addressable, enabling transparent capacity expansion to Azure storage On-premise data capacity can be increased by 2x – 5x based on the type of
