Get on the fast track to on-demand shared

services delivery

Solution brief

Quickly moving toward the cloud

More and more organizations are realizing the benefits of a dramatically different model for providing IT services today—a model in which services are sourced and delivered dynamically to meet changing needs quickly, efficiently and at a variable rather than fixed cost. Cloud technologies are at the center of this transition, offering a new way to build and deliver IT services on demand. In the cloud, delivering services can be as simple as sending users to a portal to make a request.

Many organizations have made the decision to transition to cloud over time, and agree the likely end-state will be a hybrid of both public and private cloud models. Their struggle is with how to enable the transition. For those that have already embraced virtualized IT infrastructures, the private cloud offers a more controlled—and inherently more secure— environment in which to begin the transition to on-demand services delivery.

Successfully building a private cloud requires the ability to optimize design and delivery across the entire environment, leveraging a converged infrastructure, end-to-end cloud service automation and cloud transformation services. Success also requires solutions that work seamlessly with your existing environment and across the entire private/ public/hybrid cloud landscape.

Cloud Computing Basics

Public cloud computing

delivers resources from a third

party over the Internet, using Web services.

It requires little or no up-front investment, but

there may be concerns about the security

of data delivered in this manner.

Private cloud computing

offers cloud-based services

on a private network, behind a corporate

firewall, thus reducing concerns about

exposure of sensitive data in a public

cloud environment.

Hybrid cloud computing

is a future model that

combines public and private clouds to

leverage the best aspects of both. For

example, an organization might use a

minimal-investment public cloud to store

archived data, but rely on the security

of a private cloud to store current

operational data.

2

And yet, as you map your path to a private cloud, you cannot afford the time and expense of a long, drawn-out project. You need solutions today to accelerate your deployment of a service-oriented environment that matches the speed, flexibility and economics of a public cloud, but without the risk or loss of control.

HP Private Cloud solutions

HP Private Cloud solutions provide a complete on-demand environment for delivering shared services, to speed you along the path to the cloud. These are purpose-designed, production-ready solutions. They include comprehensive, packaged offerings that bring together hardware, software and services, as well as customer-specific solutions developed using reference architectures and architectural blueprints.

for power- and space-constrained data centers. All of these rich capabilities can be drawn upon to tailor a private cloud solution for a wide variety of specific needs.

Storage

The industry’s largest scale-out cloud storage infrastructure portfolio, HP StorageWorks products are designed to maximize storage utilization and maintain security and service levels—while at the same time simplifying self-service capabilities. The modular design allows a pay-as-you-grow approach, and the non-disruptive scalability (out or up) enables you to maintain performance as storage needs increase. StorageWorks represents a smart approach to storage, with dynamic operations based on known best practices and the ability to adjust to applications needs with rapid service level changes. It’s also self-optimized to reduce storage management burdens, with adaptive analysis and tuning to maintain service levels even under failure conditions. Features like policy-based thin provisioning, tiering and replication deliver 50% savings over traditional storage.

Networking

HP Networking provides a high-performance, flexible data center fabric that forms the interconnect for a robust HP open cloud solution. The HP FlexFabric data center network architecture is a massively scalable, virtualization-optimized fabric that enables on-demand service and application mobility. To address the needs of distributed workforces and to deliver the remote quality of experience that are essential in cloud environments, HP extends the data center to campus and branch office networks that, together, provide an end-to-end managed enterprise interconnect. Products like the HP A12500 data center core switch provide up to twice the performance of competitive offerings with half the power consumption,

while utilizing innovative technologies like Intelligent Resilient Framework (IRF) that reduce management complexity, increase performance, and improve availability. HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric modules provide a server-integrated, high-performance, easy-to-manage way to connect highly virtualized cloud building blocks to the rest of the network infrastructure, dramatically reducing complexity and total cost of ownership.

Security

HP offers proactive security solutions for the virtual and physical cloud infrastructure, with scalable, high-performance intrusion prevention solutions backed by industry-leading DVLabs security research. HP solutions centrally secure the entire data center attack surface—both virtual and physical environments, including the hypervisor. Cloud security is further strengthened by the HP TippingPoint vController + vFirewall, which ensures that virtual machine traffic is inspected and any threats blocked, and that virtual machine security postures are maintained regardless of virtual machine movement within the data center. It also allows for the creation and segmentation of data center “trust zones” in which applications on virtual or physical machines can be strictly separated—for example, engineering and finance or human resource applications.

HP Cloud Service Automation (CSA) consolidates and automates the dynamic allocation, provisioning and management of cloud services across a diverse environment, including an open interface to ease integration with legacy systems. Complete automation and configuration capabilities provided by HP CSA include planning and auditing,

provisioning, maintenance and incident response, and service requests for composite applications. CSA automatically optimizes resources against policy goals (such as regulatory compliance), leveraging thousands of pre-defined resource models. CSA also employs advanced application deployment management to lower the total cost of management for dynamic cloud applications.
