MISSION STATEMENT Nourished by the Eucharist, inspired by theshared celebration of the Gospel, and committed to life long faith formation, our bilingual and bicultural Catholic parish of Deaf and Hearing persons
responds to the needs of a wider, diverse community. Side by side, we share the light of Christ as we welcome, shelter, and serve without judgment,
promoting peace and justice for all people.
Religious Education News (Credo Faith Formation)
Parents, if you are interested in having your child attend the CREDO faith formation class for 4 and 5 year olds starting in September, 2014, you are invited to come and observe the class in session on Wednesday, May 21st. Catechist, Mrs. Patty Lawson, has invited any interested parents/grandparents, etc. who would like to see a
little of what the 4 and 5 year old Credo students partake in, to come to her class on this day. Class time runs from 4:30-5:45. Please come for part or all of the class session. We look forward to seeing you on May 21st. Please enter the Gehl Center entrance on the northeast corner of the building and proceed to lower level. Any questions, contact Connie DeMeuse in the Credo Faith Formation Office at 432-0820.
From the Deacon’s desk,
If you missed the 10:45 Mass last Sunday, you missed a lot. St. John the Evangelist parish gave Fr. Girotti a nice sendoff. That, all by itself was wonderful. But in addition to that we had a wonderful shared lit-urgy with our deaf community. And it doesn’t stop there.
We had the beautiful event of the First communion of Sylvia Pryes. It is wonderful to see her receive the Lord for the first time, completing the second of the three sacraments of initiation. It began in Baptism and in no time at all she will receive the Holy Spirit through the sacrament of confirmation. By the way we will have another First Communion on June 1 and yet a third one on June 14.
Father Girotti, for the last time, performed a communion meditation hymn, “Ave Maria.on the cello. This was very fitting as May is the month of Mary. It was Mother’s Day as well as a First Communion day.
Since it was Mother’s Day, Father “G” gave all the moms, and people (women AND a man) who fulfilled the position of Mother in another person’s life a blessing. It is a tradition that the woman who has been a mother the longest receive a small gift from the parish. This year Elizabeth Miskella and Rita Wellens received a nice bottle of wine from the Chateau Ste. Jean, (translated: from the house of John). This was very fitting as it was presented by Father John. No, Father John does not have a vineyard. It is just a coincidence.
So, you see, Mass at St. John the Evangelist has a lot in it. Take this message to your friends and neighbors and ask them to come with you to church. Be proud of our beautiful Mass.
Remember there are only three weeks left in the Easter season. Pentecost Sunday is fifty days after Easter. Pentecost is often referred to as the birthday of the church. This is where Jesus breathed on the apostles and sent them out. As they go out, so should we go out and bring the Gospel of the Lord to our friends and neighbors.
One last thing, pray for good weather. The Deaf Community is having Mass on the Grass in Calu-met County Park on June 1. All are invited. Bring your lawn chairs. It will be at 3 pm on Sunday, June 1 with a pot luck to follow.
Blessings to all,
Deacon Tom
WELCOME BACK FATHER BRIAN!
Car Chat– Table Talk-Faith Formation at Home 5th Sunday of Easter
Acts 6:1-7, 36-41; 1 Peter 2:4-9; John 14:1-12
Today’s Gospel takes us back to the last Supper. Jesus tells his disciples that he is going to prepare a place for them in his Father’s house. Jesus promises that where he is going, his disciples will be able to follow. Thomas counters Jesus, saying the disciples don’t know where Jesus is going, much less how to get there! Jesus explains that he himself is the way, the truth, and the life. In knowing and loving Jesus, the disciples now know and love God the Father.
How do you know where you are going? How are you going to get there? What are the “maps” or the “markers” or the “helpers” or the “tools” your household of faith relies on in the quest to know, to love and to serve Jesus: the way, the truth, and the life…….which leads to God? How is the use and
availability of such maps, markers, helpers, and tools being shared between generations? Do the young people in your life know about your preferred “tools” or “helpers” …… have you shared them first-hand? How might you increase their awareness and their access to these “markers” or “maps” that you find
important?
Bishop’s Appeal
What was the Bishop’s Appeal goal vs. actual in 2013, and what is the goal in 2014?
The 2013 goal was $ 5,100,000, and together we raised $5,416,300. This is wonderful in that we were able to reach those who need help the most. In 2014, our goal remains $5,100,000. Needs throughout northeastern Wis-consin are high…many families still struggle to make ends meet. Our par-ishes continue to guide us along on our faith journey, and your support of the Bishop’s Appeal brings the light of Christ into the lives of those who need it the most.
Our SJE goal is just over $18,585.00. To date, $15,042.24 has been given by 90 SJE parishioners. Thank you!

FATHER SAMUEL MAZZUCHELLI
In 1835 Father Mazzuchelli wrote to President Andrew Jackson protesting the unfair
treatment the tribes were receiving. However, the government’s policy was to move the tribes to the “West”, even beyond the Mississippi. This was the period of the “Trail of Tears” in the 1830’s. At this time Father Mazzuchelli was also moving to the upper Mississippi valley - to Prairie du Chien, Dubuque, Galena, Potosi, and the lead mining region of SW Wisconsin. He gave his farewell sermon at St. John’s in December 1834 and was replaced by Father Theodore Van den Broek. Father Mazzuchelli ended his ministry as pastor in Benton, Wisconsin on February 23, 1864.
