Thought for the Day ……

Reflection onMatthew5:3-6

The opening sentences of the Sermon on the Mount still run counter to mainstream society. Such is the case for Australia.

In Jesus' vision of redistribution, the meek –those on the underside –will “inherit the earth' (vs. 5).

In contrast to that vision, we Australian Christians have a real estate theology of the earth. It is those who have money who have the most land and/or the best land.

How gospel words are translated shape the depth (or the shallowness) of our grasp of Jesus' vision. A key word in verse 6 is a good case in point. The Greek word isdikaiosuvnh. In ancient Greek that word is interpreted as 'justice'.In the famous writings of Aristotle that is clearly the case. Examples can readily be found in at least two of his writings –Nicomachean EthicsBook V and PoliticsIII: 3-4.

Jesus blesses those “who hunger and thirst for justice'(vs.6). Largely due to Protestant influence, the other (and weaker) translation of the word as 'righteousness'individualises, and thus reduces, this word from Jesus.

For justice entails a commitment, not to individualism, but to the reform and transformation of society. And Jesus, in typical form, is focussed on justice flowing to the poor, the mourners, the hungry.

In the gospels, justice often has an economic dimension. When men of means asked what they were to do to follow him, he challenged them in those terms -whether the affluent man of Mark10:17-22 or

confirming wealthy Zacchaeus' resolution to seek justice through economic sharing inLuke19:8-9.

The Sermon on the Mount lies at the heart of Christianity. And one word in it in particular (readily translated asjustice) can both inspire, and shape, our participation in the transformation of society….. Dr Ray
