Introduction

The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education have provided guidelines for the return to school that provide a framework for Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (SRPSD) to support schools in the development of their local school plans.

The purpose of this plan is to provide information regarding operations and procedures at Princess Margaret Public School that align with the guidelines provided in SRPSD Return to School Plan and the Re-Open Saskatchewan Primary and Secondary Educational Institution Guidelines.

Princess Margaret Public School is committed to work with Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division, provincial authorities and our families to support the health and safety of students, staff and all stakeholders with the resumption of classes.

This plan will be updated whenever new guidelines or directives are enacted by the school division or the province. All revisions of the plan will be communicated to parents and made available on the school’s website.

Details on the school’s processes and procedures are provided in each of the following sections:

1. Social-Emotional Supports for Staff and Students 2. Staff Supports and Safety

3. Student Supports and Safety

4. Early Learning (Prekindergarten and Kindergarten) 5. Curriculum and Instruction

6. Supporting Students with Intensive Needs 7. Extracurricular activities

8. Access to School Facilities and External Services 9. Caretaking & Maintenance

10. Transportation

11. Parent Engagement & Support

1. Social-Emotional Supports for Staff and Students

a. Relationships are the foundation of education and the key to student learning and engagement. Please feel free to call the school and talk to your child’s teacher or the principal if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Re-Open Schools Plan. We will strive to make your child feel welcome and safe at our school.

 We know that families have varying degrees of comfort with the return to school. Staff are excited and working hard to create a safe and joyful return to school. A conversation with a trusted staff member may reduce

(2)

anxiety and be all that is required to reassure your family that schools will be safe learning places.

 Since students have been out of school since the middle of March, it is important that students attend school. Teachers are expected to teach the curriculum throughout the year. There may have been some learning gaps in the previous months, therefore, strong attendance is important as we move forward together. However, if your child develops symptoms of the flu, please keep your child home. Otherwise, it is important to attend school.

b. Social-emotional supports are available to students. Please contact our school social worker, Laurel Hufnagel, for any supports you need to consider. c. Instructional practices and resources will be communicated with children that

will also address social-emotional needs such as:  Primary focus on relationships

 Trauma-informed teaching  Mental Health Literacy teachings  Other classroom-based resources 2. Staff Support & Safety

a. Proper hand hygiene practices are recommended over use of gloves. Each time an employee or student enters a classroom, it is expected that hand sanitizer will be used to sanitize the employee and students hands.

b. Employees are expected to keep workspaces and classrooms clean and free from clutter.

c. Staff who handle exchange of materials, cash, credit cards, etc. should

practice proper hand hygiene. When hands are not visibly soiled and between student, parent or other staff interactions, hand sanitizers can be used. Staff should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water when hands are visibly soiled.

d. There will be an Increase in noon hour supervisors. Our lunch times will be altered, therefore, we will have extra supervisors on hand. However, families should be thinking about items that are packed for lunch. Please provide easy opening items, especially for the primary grades, so that contact is reduced.

3. Student Supports & Safety

a. Students with COVID-19 symptoms are to remain home.

(3)

b. Registration Process for First day(s). Families are encouraged to register their children before the first day of school (September 8) due to having less numbers in the school. If families come in on the first day or later, the gymnasium will be used for registration. Please use masks and hand

sanitizers while in the school. Please visit the SRPSD Return to School Plan for more information.

c. If a child develops COVID-19 related symptoms at school, the child will be placed in an isolation room (Vice Principal’s office) where the vice principal and/or the principal will supervise. PPE will be available to all students. We will notify parents immediately and hope that families will come and remove their child from the school as quickly as possible.

Contingency plans will be in place for students not picked up at the end of the day (phone call home then possibly Mobile Crisis). Please make sure there is a way for your child to make it home at the end of the day. d. To avoid high traffic areas, children are only allowed to enter and exit their

own doors near their classrooms. At the end of the day, students in Pre-K, K, grade 1 and grade 2 will be allowed to exit the front doors. We are asking that families wait for their children outside at a designated spot and not come into the school. If students are meeting their siblings, we are asking that older children use their own doors and meet their siblings at the younger door. e. Recess and lunch hour times will be staggered. To reduce congestion in the

hallways, we will be moving our recess and lunch hour times around so that children will be out at different times.

f. During the first week of school, teachers and staff will be instructing students on proper mask use, hand sanitizing, and physical distancing rules. All of this comes from the Government of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the advice of the Chief Medical Officer. Please have a

conversation with your children about the importance of following all COVID-19 regulations and guidelines. Remember, we are all in this together. g. Masks for students in grades 4-12 are required as per Saskatchewan Rivers

Public School Division Return to School Plan. Parents/guardians wishing to provide their children with cloth masks to wear at school, are encouraged to do so (minimum 2 layer cloth mask recommended). Bandanas and gator masks are not permitted. See SRPSD Return to School Plan for full details.  Resource examples:

h. Students will still be using lockers and cubicles. However, student use will be monitored so that overcrowding does not occur.

i. Students will remain in their homerooms for the majority of the day. Music and band classes will take place in their homerooms. Phys. Ed class will be held outside, for the time being, until the weather prevents this from

happening. When Phys. Ed. classes are in the gym, students will walk down and then be given directions in the gym for the activity. Distancing and disinfecting of equipment will happen before and after Phys. Ed. equipment has been handled. Washroom breaks will be handled by the classroom teacher and admin will monitor numbers of students using the washroom at one time.

j. If a student requires support with mental health needs, teacher and/or admin will refer him/her to our Social Worker, mentor, or outside agencies following school procedures.

k. Our snack program will continue in the mornings. For safety reasons, we will be discontinuing our canteen. Emergency lunches will still be made available. Please provide a lunch for your child every day. Please help in preparing food that is easily accessible and your child can open parts of the lunch by themselves. Teachers will be coming around to help but we will no longer be having older student helpers in the primary classrooms. Please instruct your children not to share their food with others.

l. In most cases, students will receive their own materials from the school (textbooks, chrome books) for the day. Depending on the situation, books and technology will be wiped down at the end of the day/week.

m. After the first week of school, try to minimize the amount of materials being brought back and forth. For example, a backpack would not be needed every single day. Please mark lunch kits with your child’s name to avoid confusion. Resources that kids need are allowed; snow pants, mitts, toques and other items required for school will be permitted. Please make sure that all items are labeled with your child’s name. Toys, dolls and other personal belongings that are not required at school MUST STAY HOME. Library books can be taken out of the library and must be put back into a certain bin so that they remain at the desk for 3-5 days before they are put back on the shelf.

(5)

n. As we try to limit social distancing, all classrooms will be front facing as per the Chief Medical Health Officer.

4. Early Learning (Prekindergarten / Kindergarten)

a. Early learning teachers will connect with families during the first week of school to answer any questions regarding the Re-Open School Plan.

 Just a reminder that home visits will not be allowed. Parents and teachers can meet on the playground or in the parking lot. Telephone calls and video conferencing is encouraged.

b. Start times for Kindergarten will be staggered. The Kindergarten teacher will get a hold of parents as to when classes resume. Normal daily attendance will resume September 14.

c. Classroom environments will change somewhat. Toys and other resources will be limited due to proper disinfecting at the end of the day/week.

 Healthy hygiene behaviors and practices will be established through teaching protocols and procedures to students (handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding touching the face).

 We will be supporting students with limiting physical contact (hugs and handshakes etc.) and instead encouraging “air high fives”, waves, winks, saying hello in sign language, giving the peace sign etc.

 Handwashing should occur before entering each play area.  Utilizing outdoor play spaces as much as possible.

 The number of toys available will be reduced. Hard to sanitize or clean toys will be removed. This includes soft toys, for example. Many

materials and games can remain in use if children are instructed to wash their hands before and after use. Children will be instructed to avoid putting toys/ materials in their mouths.

 Practicing physical distancing at snack and lunch times. Children are not allowed to participate in food preparation. Food from home must not be shared with other children.

 Bins/baggies of supplies may be created for students. Markers, scissors, crayons, playdough etc. will be individualized to one student and not shared between children.

(6)

 When possible, increase the distance between nap mats. Nap mats will be wiped down after each use.

 Toys and resources will be cleaned regularly. 5. Curriculum and Instruction

a. Short-term Absence Supports:

 In the event that a student will be absent from school for a determined, short, period of time, the school team and parents shall collaborate to support the student’s continued growth in all subject areas during the absence in anticipation of the student’s return to the classroom.

 In the event that a school’s accommodation plan for a student determines that remote learning best aligns with the student’s needs, the school team, division personnel and parents shall collaborate to implement a remote learning plan that ensures continued focus on the achievement of outcomes as identified in the student’s Inclusion and Intervention Plan.

b. Curriculum:

Families may be very concerned about the potential loss of learning/slippage that may have occurred during the closure of schools. Teachers will work with their students from where they are and support them to grow as learners. Teachers will still be teaching the curriculum for their grade and staff and will work with each child to maximize their learning capacity.

c. Teaching of safety routines and plans will be prioritized, especially during the first week of school. Teachers will be devoting additional instructional time to the teaching of hand hygiene, mask wearing, routines and strategies to support students in maintaining physical distancing.

d. Assessment:

Teachers will be assessing students in order to determine a starting point for instruction. This will guide teachers when making decisions about how much review of the previous years or prerequisite curriculum is required before introducing new curriculum outcomes.

e. The Princess Margaret Band Program for grades 5-8 will be on hold. These classes will have a regular music period in its place. Once the restrictions on the band program are lifted, we will continue with band.

f. Phys. Ed. will continue. Weather permitting, classes will be held outside. In the event that classes are in the gym, lots of stationary activities will take place.

(7)

g. Staff will be using technology to aid students and families: SeeSaw; Google or Microsoft Suites, as a tool to support in-class learning.

h. Library books can still be borrowed. However, upon return, they will not be put back on the shelf for 3-5 days.

i. Materials used for instructional purposes will be sanitized.

6. Supporting Students with Intensive Needs

a. Inclusion continues to be a core value at the school. Additional supports from the school team and the division’s Intensive Supports team will continue to be available to respond to student needs.

b. The process for parents remains the same regarding their child’s needs and accessing additional supports. Please contact your teacher. We will then utilize our Educational Support teacher, and if need be, the SRPSD

Educational Consultants.

c. Be aware that during these extraordinary times, existing Inclusion and

Intervention plans for students with additional needs may be updated in order to:

 focus on transition plans to facilitate re-entry to school;

 revise goals as necessary to ensure student health and safety.

d. Existing student safety plans will be reviewed and updated in collaboration with all stakeholders when necessary.

e. There may be situations where a student cannot safely attend school for medical reasons, two scenarios may be considered in an accommodation process.

 Remote learning may be considered for students whose medical

restrictions make it unsafe for them to attend classes in the school setting. Contact the principal to discuss the accommodation process and

determine next steps.

 It may not be possible to support all students with intensive needs in person due to health and safety guidelines or with remote learning due to the nature of the student’s educational program. In such cases AP 154 - Temporary Exclusion of Students for Safety or Medical Reasons shall be followed.

(8)

7. Extracurricular Activities

a. In-person extra-curricular activities are on hold until further notice as per SRPSD Return to School Plan. Extracurricular activities will resume in compliance with the Saskatchewan Sports and Activity Guidelines, Chief Medical Officer guidance, Ministry of Education and RPT, public health order directives as well as guidance from SHSAA return to sport protocols.

8. External Services - Access to School Facilities

a. Non-partnership based community use of facility rentals are postponed until further notice.

b. Public access to our schools is limited.

c. Compliance with PPE requirements from the division is mandatory as per the division.

d. Plans for external services should limit any contact with student cohorts.

e. By trying to limit contact tracing, please be advised that parents and guests will be only allowed into the building on an emergency basis. Please use the front door and ring in. If you need to drop off supplies, a drop off table will be available. At the end of the day, please stay outside and our teachers will bring the students to you, especially for those Pre-K to Grade 2. Please provide a pick up point for your children.

f. Princess Margaret Public School Before & After School program will be put on hold. Two reasons: With COVID protocols, disinfecting of resources is a concern as well as students will then be in a different cohort group. As well, staff personnel has changed and we do not have an adult in place to

coordinate the program. Once we have an adult on board, we will contact parents about the BS & AS program.

9. Caretaking & Maintenance

a. School Administration will communicate with Caretaking staff when disinfecting of an area in addition to their regular routine is required (ie. students occupy an area they are not normally in).

(9)

10. Transportation

a. Parents are encouraged to support their children in walking, biking or providing other transportation to school whenever possible. Alternatives to using the bus service can help minimize exposure to viruses and increase student health and fitness.

b. Please have a designated pick-up and drop-off area for students being taken to school by family.

c. Parents are reminded that they are to avoid entering the school when picking up or dropping off their children.

d. Busing will only be provided for the delivery of students to and from school or school programs.

 No field trips or extra-curricular trips will be supported until the School Division grants permission.

 Guest ridership will not be permitted.

 Bus drivers will create and enforce seating plans that group together students who live in the same household.

 Regular cleaning and sanitization of buses will occur in accordance with SRPSD transportation sanitization plans.

 Masks or Face Shields will be worn by bus drivers.

 Masks are required for students in grades 4-12 during bus transportation. Masks for students in Pre-K to Grade 3 are optional. Refer to SRPSD Return to School Plan for more details.

11. Parent Engagement & Support

a. Communication is vital between home and school. We encourage all families to sign up for “School Messenger”. This will be our preferred method of communication. School notes will also be handed out. Continue to follow proper procedures regarding your student’s concerns. We ask that you contact your child’s teacher first as he/she may know more about your child than anyone else. If a situation arises that your child’s teacher cannot answer your question, please contact the Principal. For all Re-Open School

questions please contact your Principal.  Communication will be:

• Fact-based, guided by Health Directives when related to COVID-19 and consistent with Division messages.

(10)

• Provided with clarity on the full implementation of curriculum, instruction and assessment in this learning environment. • Provided with assurance for families.

• Provided with opportunities for feedback from families.

b. School communications channels and practices used to engage and connect with parents and families are to be consistently applied across the school.

c. Provide an outline for any planned parent engagement activities in September (virtually or in ways that adhere to the Health guidelines).

d. School Community Council (SCC) meetings will continue as per guidelines from the division. We welcome new families to join our meetings.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Princess Margaret Public School Re-Open plan, please feel free to contact the Principal.

Sincerely,

Mr. Art Feher

Principal
