The Legislative Process Is Upon Us!

November 4th is Election Day

and your vote counts. Many districts elections are tightly

con-tested and can impact your career as a nurse. At the bottom of this page are links to: 1)

non-partisan Florida voters’ guide 2) the FNA’s legislative platform, describing issues that are

perti-nent to nursing in Florida and 3) FNA’s candidate endorsements. FNA’s recommendations are

based on candidates’ history of pro-nursing voting and current viewpoints on issues listed in

their platform. Although these are important issues, I encourage everyone to research all the

issues that are important to you. On FNA’s site,

https://www.floridanurse.org/legislative/

, you

can find out which candidates are in your area using their Capital Wiz tool.

Did you know that Kate Phillips is your FNPAC (Florida Nurses Political Action Committee)

Student Liaison! Here is a word from Kate about the importance of

GETTING OUT THERE TO

VOTE!!!

At the 2014 State Convention, legendary Florida nurse lobbyist Barbara Lumpkin described one of her first experiences working

at a hospital in Florida in the 1960s. After having purchased lunch in the cafeteria, alongside an African American nursing

col-league, her fellow nurse informed her that she was in jeopardy of getting in trouble if Barbara sat with her. Having come from the

North to the South, she had never experienced segregation in person and couldn’t believe it.

During this time, the idea for Medicare and Medicaid began to gain traction politically. Barbara and her f ellow nurses walked

door to door teaching the general public. As nurses, they held the trust of the community and understood the consequences of

the law. With their help, Medicare and Medicaid passed in 1965 with an impact nothing short of profound. A lesser known

effect of the law was a mandate that all hospitals accepting government funds be de-segregated.

By engaging politically, these

nurses created a legacy of social justice in healthcare.

As nursing students we are in the unique position of harnessing our power as students and nurses to effect political change in

Flor-ida and across the nation. Our impact begins with a commitment to vote, but it certainly doesn’t end there. We should use the

power we wield to address the inequalities and needs of our era with the same dedication of our predecessors.

My question for you is:

What will be our legacy?

YOUR 2014-2015 FNSA BOARD

WELCOME

Tiffany Massey

President

Hello Florida Nursing Students, My name is Marlen Lukatsky and I am your new First Vice President for 2014-2015! I am so honored and excited to represent you and the state of Florida on behalf of the Flori-da Student Nurses Association Executive Board. I currently attend Herzing University in Orlando where I am the President of the SNA, graduating in Spring 2015. I plan on continuing my education and going for an MSN to become a Pediatric Nurse Practioner. I have my B.A. in Psychopathology and a MPH in Health and Policy Management from The City University of New York. I deal with policies, regulations, and quality assurance in my role at work currently, so bylaws and procedures are a fluent language to me. My goals as 1st VP are to continuously review FNSA Bylaws, create a seamless process for them, complete the Bylaws Chapter School Manual, and to create a database of all school chapter Bylaws. If you are interested in being involved in a committee, I invite you to consider the Bylaws Committee; I promise to make it worthwhile, because BYLAWS…ARE…FUN! It was such a pleasure meeting so many of you at convention and I am thrilled to serve on the board with other talented individuals! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Best,

Marlen Lukatsky FNSA 1st Vice President Bylaws Committee Chair FNSA1stVP@gmail.com

Hello future teammates!

I would like to thank all of you for your votes and your trust in me to be your FNSA 2nd Vice-President. I am proud and honored to serve the nursing students of Florida. As FNSA 2nd VP, I will be planning the 61st annual FNSA Convention. Kristen Ryan did an amazing job with the Diamond Anniversary and I have big shoes to fill. Some suggestions for the convention include designing a theme that unites past, present and future nurses. I will also be looking at different locations around the state for the home of the 61st annual FNSA Convention.

Hello fellow nursing students!

I am Dionne A. Williams and it is with great pleasure to be the new 2014-2015 Region 1 Director for the Florida Nursing Students Association (FNSA). I am a 4th semester student at Florida Agri-cultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, Florida. Nursing has always been my passion; thus I am excited that my dream of becoming a nurse is rapidly approaching. I am excited for the opportunity to represent on the state board and hope to accomplish great things with the help of members in Region 1. My goals for Region 1 is to strengthen the lines of communication between chapters and FNSA, promote the exchange of ideas between chapters, inspire active collaboration between chapters, and more importantly increase chapter membership and participation within FNSA. I am inspired by the quote “Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life, and not just something you do in your spare time,” by Marian Wright Eldeman. I believe giving back to our community is essential in our existence and redefines our character.

Thank you, Dionne A. Williams FNSA Region 1 Director

Break Through to Nursing Committee Chair FNSAregion1@gmail.com

Hello my name is Ricky Bettencourt, your newly elected Region 3 Director! I am looking forward to serving the students of the State of Florida as part of this years Executive Board of FNSA. I have chosen to be the Community Health Chairperson and cannot wait to see the achievements that the State of Florida can accomplish making a difference in our public's health.

A little about myself. Prior to beginning this path to becoming a Registered Nurse I was a busi-ABOUT ME: I am a husband and father of a three and four year old boy; a Captain in the Army

Reserves; I hold degrees in physical therapy, health administration, and business management; and I am an active volunteer. Currently, I attend the University of Florida as an accelerated nursing student and am more proud of this degree than any of my others. I am honored and excited to serve as your Region 2 Director and state Legislative Chair. In both roles, my goals are focused on involvement.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, ABOUT YOU: I encourage everyone to get outside their comfort zone and contribute to something. Whether it’s a position on a state committee, campaigning on issues, sub-mitting a new resolution, volunteering locally, or just shooting your region director an email with your thoughts, become a nurse leader. Helping make a difference in others inevitably makes a difference in you as well!

Hello my fellow nursing students. My name is Jamal Bernard, and I am proud to say that I will be serving as your 2014-2015 Region 5 Director/Membership chair. I am pursuing a BSN degree at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and I am currently the president of my local chapter. Prior to nursing school, I served four years in the United States Air Force. I was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, which was a very scary move to make. I had never seen snow fall prior to being stationed there. Throughout my time in the military, I faced many situations that I had never faced before. I soon realized, no matter the challenge, I could always find a way to pull through. I learned that life and the gym have one interesting similarity: if you want to get stronger, you have to lift more weight. Nursing school is challenging, but I believe we should not let it limit the impact we make outside of the classroom by getting involved and sharing what we have learned to empower our community. As your Region 5 director/ Membership chair I hope to moti-vate students to lift more weight, so we can become a bigger and stronger FNSA!

Jamal Bernard,

FNSA Region 5 Director Membership Committee Chair FNSAregion5@gmail.com Hello my fellow nursing students in Florida! What a spectacular 60th Anniversary Convention we just experienced. I can say without a doubt I am inspired to do more and be more after that uplifting and energizing experience. I am grateful for the honor to be able to come back and serve Region 4 again as a 2014-2015 FNSA Board Member. I have various fun and ex-citing activities planned for this upcoming year so get ready! I am thrilled to announce that I will be the 2014-2015 Resolutions Chair allowing me to work closely with the brilliant authors of Resolutions that were just passed at Convention. This Chair is near and dear to my heart because it gives nursing students a voice. Having the opportunity to start making changes now as students for the nursing field it such an exceptional experience. If anyone is interest-ed in joining the committee please contact me. We have big shoes to fill from the 2013-2014 FNSA Board but I am sure with your support we can do it.

Kimberlyn Sauer-Watts, FNSA Region 4 Director Resolution Committee Chair FNSAregion4@gmail.com

My name is Arsalan Hamid and I'm the current Region 6 Director for FNSA and the new chair for Nominations and Elections committee. I want to share small history about my self. Before nursing school, I managed two AT&T retail stores for about 2 years. This gave me a lot of experience in cus-tomer service and also leading a great team of sales representatives. Towards the end of my experi-ence with AT&T, I started my medical career as a student while working and started by getting my Emergency Medical Technician Certificate from Broward Fire Academy. This led me to further ex-plore the medical field and I attended McFatter Technical Institute and successfully completed their Practical Nursing program.

As a practical nurse, I started to work and gain some experience as a nurse in a medical clinic where I was able to realize that being a practical nurse is still holding me back from achieving the true pur-pose in the nursing field and decided to pursue my current BSN degree at Barry University. My ulti-mate career goal is to practice as a CRNA and manage my own medical supplies company. Arsalan Hamid,

It is his first semester active in nursing school and he is now your new Region 7 Director. He was born in Clearwater, FL, and has lived in Fort Myers, FL, for all 21 years of his life. Kevin has had a strong passion for nursing, the field of medicine, and the human body ever since his first anatomy and physiology class in high school. He has spent the past 7 years work-ing at 9 different jobs in order to save up money and pay for his education on his own. When Kevin isn't studying, he enjoys playing the guitar, singing, drums, and a little bit of the piano. He plans to graduate in May 2016 with a bachelors in nursing from Florida Gulf Coast University. One day, Kevin hopes to become a perioperative nurse and strives to run towards that goal after receiving his RN license in the near future.
