Plotting Points in 4 Quadrants

Indicate the coordinates of the following points:

A: __________

B: __________

C: __________

Represent the following points on the graph:

D: (5, 1) F: (3, -1)

E: (-2, 4) G: (-4, -2)

In which of the following quadrants are these points located? Plot the points.

J: (2, -3) _______________________ K: (-5, 1) _________________________

Determine the coordinates of point H, which has an x-coordinate that is 5 more than point B

and is located in quadrant 4.

Determine the coordinates of point I, which is located on the x-axis and has one of the same coordinates as point A.

Homework – Plotting Points on a Graph

1. Name the point with the given coordinates on the following grid.

a) (3, 1) i) (-6, -4)

b) (-5, 1) j) (-2, 2)

c) (2, 3) k) (3, 5)

d) (4, -1) l) (6, -3)

e) (0, -2) m) (-1, -4)

f) (5, 2) n) (0, 0)

g) (-3, 0) o) (-4, -1)

h) (1, -5)

2. State the coordinates of each point shown on the grid.

A) I)

Scatter Plots

A Scatter Plot can help determine if there is a relationship between two variables.

The title of the graph tells others what is plotted on your graph. Titles are usually listed as Y versus X. Include a title for your graph.

The independent variable is the variable you need to know first. What is the independent variable? Where do you find it on a graph?

The dependent variable is the variable whose value depends on the other variable. What is the dependent variable? Where do you find it on a graph?

Determine what one square is worth on the x-axis. This is known as the scale for the x-axis.

Determine what one square is worth on the y-axis. This is known as the scale for the y-axis. The scale does not have to be the same for the x-axis and the y-axis.

State the coordinates of point A.

State the meaning of point A.

State the coordinates of point B.

A trend is the pattern shown by the data on a graph. State the trend of this graph. 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 22

0 10 20 30

The following table compares the number of hours that a student spent studying, and their test score.

a) What is the scale on the x-axis?

b) What is the scale on the y-axis?

c) Complete the the graph from table of values:

Study Hours Test Score

3 80

5 90

2 75

6 80

7 92

1 57

6 19

2 64

7 81

1 40

7 100

d) What was the average on the test? Round to two decimal places.

e) Andy earned the highest mark on the test. How many hours did Andy study?

f) Maggie and Samaya earned the same mark on the test, but Maggie studied longer. How much longer did Maggie study than Samaya?

g) An outlier is a point that does not fit with the rest of the data on the graph. Circle an outlier on the graph. Give a possible explanation for this point.

Scatter Plots – Practice

Natalie works for the Ministry of Health. She measures the relationship between the amount of physical activity per week and age. She recorded the following data.

Age (years) 20 22 30 30 34 26 26 18 36 36 28 30

Physical Activity

(h) 15 11 6 7 6.1 13 8.5 16 3 5.8 11 9

a) Represent the data using a scatter plot. Include labels for each of the axis and a title for the graph.

b) Describe the relationship between the variables.

Nine people bought apples at the farmer’s market. The number of apples purchased and weight of each person’s bag is shown by the scatter plot shown below.

a) Emma bought the most apples. How many apples did she buy and how much did her bag weigh?

b) Oscar had the heaviest bag. How many apples did he buy and how much did his bag weigh?

c) Nora and Laura bought the same number of apples, but Nora’s bag was heavier. How much heavier was Nora’s bag?

d) Give one reason why Nora’s bag might have been heavier than Laura’s.

e) Laith’s bag was much lighter than he expected. How many apples did he buy and how much did his bag weigh?
