Dear Summer Tour Participants,

Shortly you will travel to the Netherlands, I expect for most of you the first time, a country different from your own. As Chairman of Rotary Club Sassenheim I am thrilled you have chosen our Summer Tour and on behalf of the whole club I would like to express a warm welcome to you all. During a week you will be our guests, you will participate in home hospitality, meaning you will be part of the family.

I complement you all for you decision to participate in the Rotary Short Term Summer Tour, a unique opportunity to discover new countries and cultures, to meet young people your own age from different countries with their own cus-toms and traditions and to exchange experiences.

Holland is a small country with a lot to do and see, we have tried to make a program that will give you a good idea of our country, with also enough time off to recover from all impressions. Amongst other activities, you will visit Amster-dam, go on a boat trip the old city of Leiden, visit the city of VolenAmster-dam, visit an old steam pumping station that was used to reclaim land, enjoy a day at the beach, ride a bicycle and enjoy time together and with your host family. Again, welcome to Holland and specifically to Sassenheim, I hope you will have a great Summer Tour, that you will return home with new precious experiences, new friendships.

Tea Boudesteijn

Chairman Rotary Club Sassenheim

Dear Summer Tour Participants,

Two weeks on your own in a foreign country, away from home and friends, undergoing new experiences, meeting new people and getting used to different cultures and traditions, two weeks that will be challenging and rewarding. Returning home after two weeks with new friends, new knowledge, new experiences and hopefully a new love: Hol-land!

Welcome to Holland and Sassenheim, we will do our best to make you feel at home!

This will be the first week of your Summer Tour to the Netherlands, your next week will be in Zutphen, a different part of our country. We have tried to compose a program that is informative, relaxing, exiting and will give you an impression of Holland, in particular the western part with Amsterdam, the sea and the dunes.

In this booklet you will find the program and other useful information. You will find important telephone numbers, ad-dresses and guidelines on what to do and ( even more important ) what not to do, and when you encounter prob-lems or homesickness. Please read it carefully and always keep it with you, you can leave a copy at home for your parents.

During this day we will visit the Ijsselmeer and some of its old and picturesque cities. Till 1932 the Ijsselmeer, for-merly known the Southern Sea, was an open sea and for centuries ships departed the small harbours for trade and fishing. In 1927 work began to build a dyke, the Afsluitdijk, to secure a large part of Holland from the sea. The Dyke was completed in 1932 and since then the Ijsselmeer gradually became an sweet water inland lake. There is still a large fishing activity and it is a very popular sailing area. We will visit Volendam, famous around the world for its fish-ing tradition and traditional clothfish-ing, where a picture of you all in traditional clothfish-ing will be taken. We will also visit the city of Enkhuizen and the Open Air museum, which gives an unique view of how life around the sea was a cen-tury ago.
