Stewardship: A Way of Life 1st Sunday of Lent “After John had been arrested,

Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of

God…..” Mark 1:14

Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming? It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us.

WORD OF LIFE: “Abortion affects countless marriages more than many people recognize. But there is no doubt that God will bring great healing to those who trust in his infinite mercy. If a past abortion can be acknowledged and addressed, a married couple can make great

strides in experiencing even more fully God’s design that ‘the two shall become one’ (Mt 19:5).”

A Note from Our Pastor ...

 Let us be mindful of our whole parish communities, St. Joseph and St. Mary, during this Lent. In our thoughts and prayers, let us remember those who are vulnerable and not able to come to Mass. In our fasting and abstaining, let us remember those

who are suffering in any way and pray for their well being. Oh God, we come before you as your people

united in faith, as sisters and brothers. We want to carry each other’s burdens so that we can all glorify your name together and receive you in physical and spiritual Communion

at the Eucharistic Feast. We want to praise you forever and with special joy at Easter.

Amen.

 I’m grateful for the opportunity to reflect on the blessings of the Church in our diocese. Last week we watched the Annual Catholic Appeal video, and I recognized not only the places filmed but also the services performed, and even some of the people doing

them. I’m grateful for the leadership of Bishop Hying and the unity of faith that is shared among all Baptized Catholics, with appreciation for all other Christians, too. Thank you to all who have participated in the ACA!

 I will be adding permanent extra Confession times at St. Joseph-Edgerton. They will be the first two Sundays of each month, and they will be after the Sunday Mass. I will say farewell to people for a few minutes, and then I will go to the Confession booth on the north end of the church. I will stay until everyone who wants to visit the

sacrament has had the opportunity.

 You may notice a change in our Opening Prayer at Mass. Previously, it ended “one God, forever and ever.” Now I will omit the word

“one.” The ending will be “God, forever and ever.” The reason for this is that we are describing Jesus. Instead of saying that he is “one God,” we will be saying that he is “God.” This is a global change, directed from the Vatican.

Saint Mary Faith Formation...

LENT IS HERE...

Scripture: In the Sunday Gospel, the Holy Spirit leads Jesus

into the wilderness for forty days. The desert is a place of testing, but it is also a place to be close to God. Jesus’ time in the desert calls us to make Lent a season of growth, a season for developing habits that will make us more loving toward God and one another.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Operation Rice Bowl: Bean Cakes—Burkino Faso  1 can black-eyed peas, drained

 1 small onion, chopped

 2 carrots, peeled & chopped

 1 egg, whisked

 ½ tsp salt

 ½ tsp black pepper

 1 cup flour

 ¼ cup fair trade olive oil

 2 cups cooked rice

Place black-eyed peas in a blender with the onion, carrots, and egg. Blend to a smooth paste and add salt and pepper. If bean mixture has too much liquid to form balls, then add a ¼ cup of flour to thicken. Shape mixture into 2 inch balls and roll in flour. Pat into flat discs and fry in vegetable oil until browned (about 5-7 minutes), turning occasionally. Serve with rice.
