2019 Report

to Community

(2)

I have been part of the

EducationMatters board since 2005 and its Chair for the past 5 years. Calgary has changed a lot in 15 years; our students are set to inherit a city beset with challenges, and our job is to make sure that they are prepared to not only overcome adversity, but transform it into something positive.

Investing in our students now will see returns for generations to come. In 2019, our donors were benefactors, collectively, for thousands of students by helping to provide over 100,000 nutritious breakfasts, a multitude of field trips, funding to assist students in realizing their post-secondary dreams, and other numerous educational enhancements that build students to grow into their roles as future leaders. Knowing that their community believes in them is a powerful gift and is especially impactful in these turbulent economic times.

After my many years of service to EducationMatters and students, the time has come to step back as Chair and pass the torch to my esteemed colleague Ms. Nancy Close, and I am taking this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to all of our supporters. Together, we are empowering our future leaders to learn during their time in school, so that they may earn to prosper and provide a return as contributing citizens throughout their lives. Thank you for your investment in our future.

In a time when many of our family, friends and neighbours are experiencing financial hardship in our province, caring and thoughtful fellow citizens step up to help alleviate the challenges. We are fortunate to have an amazing community of supporters whose compassion, empathy, and desire to lift up others makes a meaningful difference to Calgary students every single day.

Every student deserves equitable opportunities to help them to reach their potential in school, and our work in 2020 will continue to ensure that students receive timely, appropriate supports whenever and wherever needed. Together, we hope to provide $1.62M in additional funding support to CBE students to help mitigate their challenges and bolster their strengths; priorities for 2020 will include math, classroom libraries, field trip access, upgrading equipment in high and junior high school workshops, and providing more technology supports for those in need.

Nurturing talents, passion, innovation, and critical thinking skills in our students today is instrumental in ensuring our community’s longevity. When we properly prepare each young adult for life after graduation we all reap the benefits; our students, and our city, are worth the investment, and we are so grateful to have you as a partner in our work.
