Two books that have helped me decide my actual career path are‘Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies’ by Nick Bostrom and ‘1984’ by George Orwell. The potential benefits of advanced AI have to be weighed against the probable apocalyptic consequences of the imperfect solution to the‘AI Control Problem’. Simultaneously, machine superintelligence will be a function of higher information processing, which means there need to be strict control measures to avoid invasion of privacy. I want to make my career in this niche–helping the development of ethical AI. I want to ensure that any AI application that we build is controlled enough not to pursue its own sub-goals while is independent enough not to become an instrument for turnkey tyranny. Identification of these career goals along with the cognition of lack of personal technical skills has prompted me to take the academic path for my career development.

The financial crisis has heated the debate between the supporters of laissez-faire capitalism and proponents of more mercantilist notions of government regulated industry practices. In the long-run I want to lead an international firm which helps to establish a more transparent system while allowing employees to develop an entrepreneurial attitude in their work. I understand the need for regulatory oversight and have developed a great amount of respect for the amount of thought and effort put in by regulators to ensure investor protection. I have also seen how excessive focus on regulations leads to unnecessary drudgery, diverting energy from innovative thought and practices.

Coming from a society where being a doctor or an engineer is a norm, I have been accused of having a head full of dreams. Music is my identity and singing is where I hope to make a lifelong career. Singing and music has acted as a link connecting generations in my family and I am glad that I have inherited this gift and interest. On my maternal side, I am a third generation singer who is actively pursuing music as a career choice. My mother is a singer too and has learnt the nuances of Indian classical music since a young age from my grandfather. Continuing the family tradition, I learnt about musical instruments and singing from my mother. Since an early age of 9, I had a penchant for singing and thus she enrolled me to learn Indian classical singing at Ajivasan. I completed my certification in Indian Classical Music for singing and for playing the Harmonium. Since then music has been my identity which has taken hold of me and I have never looked back.
