Volunteer Assistance Structure

Due to the impacts of the COVID -19 pandemic currently prohibiting volunteer travel to F2F countries, Purdue F2F is employing a

virtual/local volunteer assistance strategy to support host organizations. Different from traditional volunteer assignments, these assignments will deploy local volunteers from the F2F country or a bordering nation (provided local international travel is allowed) in conjunction with a remote, US-based volunteer who provides technical support and guidance as needed. The virtual component of these assignments will use precise information (description, photos, videos, video calls, brochures, etc.) for volunteer correspondence that answers technical questions, and provides virtual real-time or pre-recorded training. They will not be bound by a traditional 2-3-week timeframe but will be deliverable-based, with each deliverable assigned its deadline for completion. Furthermore, these assignments will require significant collaboration between remote volunteers, field staff, and the local volunteers interacting with hosts. Assignment activities will be in compliance with social distancing and in-country norms, and will not place any volunteer, host, or field staff member in a situation with undue risk.

Remote: The remote volunteer will provide guidance and technical support to the local volunteer as needed. This may include meetings with the local volunteer, co-creating and co-presenting training materials as directed by the local volunteer.

Local: The local volunteer will consult with the host group to assess and tailor the training program, discuss the creation and delivery of training materials with the remote volunteer, provide demonstrations during the trainings, and offer technical support between

Project Overview

Trinidad and Tobago is a two-island country of a diverse population with rich history and culture. As an island nation, it is under the constant mercy of changing climate that is affecting natural resources and agriculture. At present, it is a net food importing country forcing the government to refocus its attention on sustainable agriculture as a part of its 2030 country development strategy. The tropical climate and available natural resources, if used properly, can make the country self-sufficient in vegetables, root crops and some fruits with a provision to export value added products. It is an opportune time for F2F volunteers to engage with agriculture extension officers and farmers to impart knowledge and learn about the culture and endurance of Trinbagonians. The objective of the F2F Trinidad and Tobago Country Program is to improve food and nutrition security through productivity, safety, and profitability as well as strengthening the extension service through capacity building.
