Foreword

After the success gained by the former editions of Udine Import Export Directory we are pleased to renew the initiative with some novelties:

• the input of business data supplied by Companies takes place through the compilation of an on-line form,

• the latest updating of the Directory is October 2010 and thanks to periodical editing Companies may apply for inclusion or updating of their own profile at any time.

This edition of the Directory includes 402 Company profiles as compared to the 265 profiles gathered by the first one. The number of new entries is very encouraging, considered the particularly difficult situation of world economy.

For a long time now the economy of Friuli has been playing an important role in the development of the Italian and international economic system. Two main factors shape the economic environment of Friuli:

• the central geographical position in the new European Union (EU 27) confers to Friuli a leading role in transports and trade exchanges between North and South, East and West;

• a strong vocation for international economic relations which makes the region rank among the top ones in Italy as for internationalization rate.

The primary task of the Chamber of Commerce is to represent this economy both through the dynamic analysis of its components, and by carrying out promotion and internationalization activities “in support of the general interests of Enterprises”.

Udine Import Export Directory is a useful trade promotion tool for Friuli economy both in Italy and abroad, being a rich reference source which allows to identify Companies successfully engaged in import and export activities in the main economic sectors, and to create new development opportunities.

The numerous enterprises included in this Directory are evidence of the variety of economic sectors and geographic areas involved in trade exchange between the province of Udine and the whole world.

The catalogue is introduced by a detailed analysis of the economic standing and trade exchange of the Udine province, based on economic data referred to the second quarter of 2010. Companies in the Directory are classified according to NACE 2007 code of economic activity, and are also listed in alphabetical order in the index.

Economic Report

Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region located in the North-East of Italy, bordering with Austria in the North, Slovenia in the East, and the Adriatic Sea in the South. The Region covers an area of 7,800.00 square meters, and counts a population of 1,230,000 inhabitants.

The province of Udine is situated at the heart of Friuli Venezia Giulia, and covers 62% of the regional surface, stretching from the mountains to the Adriatic coast with a 4,893.00 square kilometre area. The territory of the province of Udine is characterized by a large mountainous area, making up 53% of the whole surface, a hilly area making up 14% of the territory, and a wide plain accounting for 34% of the whole area. The province has 541,000 inhabitants.

The whole region and the province of Udine in particular, are a natural crossroads for trade flows coming from eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East. Thanks to such geographical position and to the natural capacity of its inhabitants to carry on good business relations with neighbouring countries, the province plays a leading role in international trade exchange.

The main economic assets of the province of Udine may be summarized in the following five features:

1) the geographical position at the heart of the new European Union, which constitutes a strong growth opportunity for the local economic system;

2) a strong international attitude characterized by ever increasing export trends and high degree of openness towards foreign markets;

3) one of the highest ratios in Italy between Research & Development expenditure and GDP;

4) the presence of qualified advanced service centres, such as the University of Udine, CATAS (Research & Development Centre and Laboratory for technical tests for the wood and furniture industry) in Manzano, AGEMONT (Agency for the economic development of the mountain area) in Tolmezzo, the Scientific and Technologic Park Luigi Danieli in Udine, C.E.T.A. (Centre for Theoretical and Applied Ecology);

5) a high standard of living achieved thanks to the adoption of a sustainable development policy and appropriate investments in environmental education carried out by institutions and territory, aimed at the reduction of pollution and the careful preservation of territory.

Udine is the administrative main town of the province, counting almost 100,000 inhabitants. Beyond its traditional administrative and trade functions, over the last few years Udine has also achieved a leading role in the field of education and research, thanks to the presence of the University.

The more relevant economic activities in the province are gathered in four industrial parks: Aussa Corno (www.aussacorno.it), the industrial area of Tolmezzo (www.cosint.it), the industrial area of the Piedmont Upper Friuli (www.cipaf.fvg.it) and the industrial area of Middle Friuli (www.ziu.it).

Further important industrial districts in the territory are: the chair district (www.ud.camcom.it/P42A0C0S371/Promozione-sezione.htm) where wood working mills, chair and furniture manufacturers are concentrated; the farming and food district (www.parcoalimentare.it) where numerous activities for the transformation of food and of San Daniele ham in particular are located, and the digital technologies district, gathering software producing companies (www.comune.tavagnacco.ud.it, www.friuliinnovazione.it).

The manufacturing system of the Province of Udine on the 30th_{of September 2010 was made up of 53,403 enterprises,}

19.4% of which (i.e.10,330) belong to the primary sector (farming and fishing), 11.9% belong to the industry sector (6,316), 15.7% are construction industries (8,356), 29.1% are trade activities (15,545 traders, hotels and public premises), while the remaining 23.9% (12,856) are service activities.

Among the agricultural activities a leading role is played by the cultivation of vines and cereals. The prevailing manufacturing activities are found in the steel working and wood processing sectors - although both sectors have been unfavourably affected by the international economic crisis over the last two years - followed by the furniture-making and advanced home-appliances industries (domotics), the food sector, the production of tool machines, and building.

The economy of Friuli is also characterized by tourism: the region’s territory is beautifully varied, and offers a wide range of tourist attractions, such as outdoor and sport facilities, traditional wine and food, cultural and artistic attractions, yachting, farm holidays, spas, plus the more traditional seaside and mountain resorts.

Trade Exchange

The economy of Friuli is characterized by high volumes of trade exchange, with a prevalence though of export activities. 2009 however has proved to be a very difficult year for Friuli exports too. The economic crisis has heavily affected both imports, which decreased by 40%, and exports which sank 25%, with some remarkable exceptions though: the export flow towards a few countries such as Turkey, Poland and the United States showed in fact a positive trend.

In 2009 the total value of exports for the province of Udine amounted to 4,411.24 million euros, with a difference of -24.7% against 2008; the value of imports amounted to 1,999.37 million euros, with a decrease of 40.2% as compared with 2008. The trade balance totalled thus +2,411.87 million euros. The fourth quarter of 2009 showed a better performance as compared to the third quarter between the months of June and September which proved to be the worst period of the year altogether.

2009 has been a very critical year for the entire nation, with a remarkable drop of exports all over the territory; the drop of exports however has been stronger for South Italy and the islands (-29,4%), due to the sharp reduction of value of export sales of refined oil products, and the North-East (-22,1%), as compared to the North-West (-20,3%) and central Italy (-15,6%). The North-East in general, except the province of Triest, showed in fact a negative trend. Friuli Venezia Giulia exports amounted to 10.7 billion euros, recording a 19% reduction in line with the drop suffered by other regions of the North-East, namely Trentino Alto Adige (-17%), Veneto (- 23%), and Emilia Romagna.

The negative trend affected all trade sectors: the export of machinery sank 7%, the export of basic metals and fabricated metal products fell by 48%, electric appliances decreased by more than 6%, articles of rubber and plastics dropped 24%, whereas foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco dropped 7%.

If we now analyse 2009 export figures at macro sector level, we see that mechanics and electronics accounted for 71.4% of total exports, followed by other industrial products with a 12.5% share, while chemical, rubber and plastic products accounted for 8, 5% of total exports, food represented a 3.2% percentage, wood and paper stood at 2.2%, followed by the fashion industry with a 1.4% share, whereas agriculture and fishery products covered a 0.9% quota.

With reference to destination area, in 2009 exports slowed down towards almost all continents and countries; only exports towards North America marked a positive variation, while exports towards Europe (almost -1/3), South and Central America, and Asia showed a sharp decrease.

The negative trend is confirmed also in imports, with a sharp drop of the volume of goods imported from all continents. There are however some positive performances which are rather encouraging, namely the increase of exports towards Poland, Turkey, Libya, the United States, the United Arab Emirates and India. Such a gloomy background leads us to evaluate small losses of export quotas inferior to 4%, such as those recorded towards China and Japan, as small hints that do not compromise the overall performance of Italian exports.

On the other hand, the downturn of exports towards other emerging countries such as Russia (-37,7%) and Brasil (-50%) is actually very heavy.

Figures at country level also show the difficulties faced by the economies of eastern and central Europe, which have played an increasingly leading role as trading partners of Udine and Friuli Venezia Giulia over the last few years. In fact figures show a sharp drop both of imports and exports from and towards the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia.

The first 6 months of 2010 brought important signs of recovery at province level following the national trend. During the second quarter of the year the number of new enterprises’ registrations has improved , and even trade exchange, after a difficult start in the early months of the year, has shown some rather encouraging results which however need to be confirmed by the trends of the last part of the year.
