Marysville Lions Club – Winter Skating Party

We are pleased to announce that the Marysville Lions Skating Party is scheduled for Friday,

December 13th from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Marysville Arena. The Lions Club has generously donated, and will feed us regular hot dogs and hot chocolate at our Party. If your child does not want a hot dog or has allergies or dietary restrictions please send a bag lunch. There is a very good chance that Santa will make a guest appearance. Just a reminder that all students must wear a helmet, gloves or mitts and snow pants to be able to go skating. If adults ar e planning to skate, please remember that you need a helmet too! We hope you will be able to attend … any extra hands to tie skates is always appreciated!

On behalf of everyone at Marysville Elementary, we would like to wish you, and your family, a joyous holiday and a happy New Year.

Christmas Concert! Thursday, December 19th at 1:00 and 6:00 pm

Please bring a cash donation or non-perishable food item in support of the Kimberley Food Bank. Food Bank

In keeping with Christmas tradition at Marysville, we will be collecting donations for the Kimberley Food Bank. Collection boxes will be located in the foyer. We hope that everyone will be able to help others in our community by contributing to this worthwhile cause.

Friday, December 20th is Hot Lunch! PAC could use all the help they can; if you’re able to, please come on down and help hand out pizza! Please let Shannon Portman know if you can help out. Next PAC Meeting

The December PAC meeting is scheduled for December 13th at 8:30am. All parents are invited to attend.

Christmas Shopping Spree

The popular Christmas Shopping Spree will be held in the morning on Thursday, December 12th. The Shopping Spree provides a wonderful opportunity for children at Marysville to select and wrap gifts for everyone in their immediate family. Thank you to our hard working PAC for organizing this special event. Please return the shopping spree form to the school by Monday, December 9th with your family information. And, if you are able to help wrap presents and help students select gifts on December 12th, please RSVP to Shannon in the office.

After School

Please remind your child(ren) that if their caregiver doesn’t show up after school they should come back into the school and we will contact someone to find out what the plan is for the child.

Marysville Winter Market

The Marysville School Parent Advisory Council hosted the Marysville Winter Market on

November 16th. It was an enormous success which raised $3200 which will help support student programs and in particular swimming, skating, skiing and literacy in the school. The event was made possible by the many parent and student volunteers, school staff, maintenance staff, vendors that booked tables and of course the enormous support of the community. A big thank you to Lyndsay Sinclair and Jen Quigley for organizing and running the Marysville Winter Market and making it the success it was; THANK YOU!!! We would also like to thank all the many parent and student volunteers! Great job everyone!

Cold Weather

Winter is here! Please ensure that your child is adequately dressed when they arrive at school, particularly as we move into the colder winter months. Students are asked to play outside even on cooler days so that they can burn off some energy, play with their friends, and can learn better in class. Students will be asked to remain inside on days when the temperature is below -20. Thanks for making sure your child has outdoor boots, snow pants, a winter coat, warm gloves, a toque or hat, and inside shoes at school each day. Running shoes are ideal for inside footwear as students can also use them in the gym.

Please label all of your child’s clothing as we have an abundance of “one mitts” and we don’t know to whom they belong.

School Bus Cancellation Protocol

Given the unpredictability of weather at this time of year we would like you to be aware of school bus cancellation protocol.

On harsh weather days please listen to the radio station to determine whether busses are running. The radio station will report if the busses are running and if schools are open. If you do not hear any announcements regarding school busses, please assume that the busses are running and on schedule. If the designated bus does not arrive at your child’s bus stop within 15 minutes of the scheduled time please return home.

Rocky Mountain School District

K-7 REPORT CARD INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Rocky Mountain School District is providing parents with report cards in an updated format to reflect changes to assessment and reporting connected with the redesigned curriculum in BC. The report cards issued starting last school year had the changes outlined below which are aligned with the Ministry Draft Reporting Policy being piloted by a number of school districts.

Proficiency Scale

Rocky Mountain School District uses the four point provincial proficiency scale to report

student progress in grades K-7. This replaces the performance scales of approaching, meeting,

exceeding currently used in kindergarten report cards, not yet meeting, approaching, meeting, exceeding in grades 1-3, and letter grades (and other descriptors used by schools doing

“comments only” reporting) used in intermediate grade report cards. This means a consistent scale across schools and across all elementary grades.

The four-point provincial proficiency scale is used to communicate student progress in all areas of learning. It describes levels of proficiency in relation to the learning standards of the provincial curricula.

Single Term Format

It is expected that reporting will reflect a student’s current level of performance. It is not

appropriate to average previous and current performance levels or penalize a student for lower achievement while he or she was learning and developing a skill if the student has attained a higher level since. The report card template used by the pilot districts and by Rocky Mountain

(5)

School District does not show previous reporting term progress; each report card only shows the level of performance for the current reporting period. This has always been the case for primary and now applies to grades 4-7 as well.

Enhanced Comment Options

In Rocky Mountain School District, teachers may choose, as in the past, to provide report card comments that go beyond the traditional boxes in the report card. Each student receives a standard report card but the comments on the report card itself may be brief and direct the parent to an attachment, e-portfolio, or record of a three-way conference with additional information and examples of the student’s learning. Whether the comment for each learning area is contained on the report card or linked or attached in an expanded format, it will clearly communicate what the student can do relative to the curricular standards, areas for attention or growth, and next steps and supports for learning.

Student Self-Reflection on Core Competencies

All students K-9 in BC are reflecting on their own development in the Core Competencies of Communicating, Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Positive Personal and Cultural Identity, Personal Awareness and Responsibility, and Social Responsibility. As of June 2018 the end-of-year report card has included a comment directing the parent to see the attached or linked evidence of the student’s description of themselves in these areas. The first year it was required that students share their reflection on at least one of the areas, the next year was more than one area, and now in our third year, it will be all three areas. Students have shared this reflection in a number of ways including written descriptions, videos, and other

demonstrations.

Please contact your school’s Principal if you have questions about reporting on your child’s progress.
