The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Engineering and Technology

Academic Program

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Engineering and Technology (PGSE&T) is a four week summer residential program of intensive classroom study and research for exceptionally talented, rising high school seniors. Hosted by the Lehigh University P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, the PGSE&T provides enrichment experiences in the fields of engineering and technology. A major goal of the program is to encourage young talent to pursue careers in these areas and other STEM disciplines, thereby fostering global competitiveness in engineering and technology and other STEM disciplines, for both the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and for the nation. The core of the program is a cooperative living and learning environment, in which participants are encouraged to work in teams, to solve complex problems, both in the classroom and in the laboratory, using the sophisticated technology and facilities available at Lehigh University.

WHO MAY APPLY

Academically talented high school students who are current juniors at the time of the application deadline may apply to the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Engineering and Technology. Applicants are expected to demonstrate academic achievement, sustained interest in the sciences and mathematics, and a record of pursuing this interest in activities beyond the classroom.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

The application consists of four parts. The applicant must complete the Personal Data Form, attaching essays and an extracurricular resume. Two teachers – a science teacher and a mathematics teacher – each must complete a reference form. The applicant's guidance counselor must complete a

recommendation form, attaching the transcript and current grades, attendance record and, if available, test scores and class standing. (Homeschoolers should contact the PGSE&T Office for instructions on who may complete the forms.)

From the pool of qualified applicants, 50 participants will be chosen from across the state. The competition is very intense. A selection panel comprised of PGSE&T administration and Lehigh University faculty convenes to read the applications. All parts of the application are taken into account, with emphasis placed on the student's written expression and ideas conveyed through the essays, as well as the transcript. The teacher and counselor forms are read for evidence of the student's daily work habits, attitudes, curiosity, independence and reliability.

COSTS AND COMMITMENT

The PGSE&T Scholarship covers tuition, room, board, instructional materials and program activities for all participants. Families are responsible for transportation to and from the program, pocket money, a residential life deposit that is refunded if all conditions are met, and for damages not covered by the deposit. Students must remain in residence for the full program, including weekends. They must arrive promptly for all classes and activities. There is some unscheduled time nearly every day for personal use, but the Governor’s School cannot provide special facilities or alter schedules for formal athletic training, intensive music study or other commitments unrelated to the program.

CORE COURSES

To keep pace with the rapid changes in professional technologic inquiry, PGSE&T Grand Challenges may change from year to year. The courses and research opportunities listed below provide a general picture of the experiences students can expect. Core Courses (taken by all students in the program) will be based on the following Grand Challenges for Engineering and focus on the following themes:

• Energy

• Health care / Bioengineering • Cyber-Security, • Transportation/Infrastructure • Environment/Sustainability • Manufacturing/Additive Manufacturing • Personal Electronics • 3-D Printing • Nano-technology • Military Technology

These core courses will also cover fundamentals from each of Lehigh’s seven engineering departments including: Industrial and Systems Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering,

(13)

PGSE&T Student Application: Summer 2015 GUEST LECTURES

The program will include a focus on the Grand Challenges of Engineering as listed above by including guest lectures, given by specialists in the STEM-related fields.

LABORATORY RESEARCH AND PROJECTS

Each team (five members per team) will have 1 project during the course of this program. A poster,

presentation, and paper will be required for the project. The projects will span the Grand Challenges and the STEM fields, with emphasis on engineering and technology. The intellectual idea behind each project will be approved by a member of the faculty, but student participants will be given considerable freedom to plan and execute the project.

STUDENT LIFE

Students will be housed in Lehigh University dormitories and eat in the university cafeteria and local restaurants during the program. To support the goal of students living in and creating a community of learners, an extensive plan for programming within the residence halls is in place. Residence Life staff (Ratio of one staff member for 5 students) offer a variety of social, cultural and recreational programs and activities to take place in the evenings and during the weekends, to support the Engineering and Technology curriculum and to encourage interaction among the participants.

The live-in staff includes a residence life coordinator and 9 student mentors. Students and staff are housed in residence halls on Lehigh’s campus with social activities held in the common areas of each hall.

Members of the opposite sex are not allowed in the sleeping room areas of either hall at any time, with the exception of the student mentors. The residence halls are traditional-style dormitories, with common areas and common bathroom.

FACULTY AND FACILITIES

Picture yourself on a beautifully wooded campus spanning 2,358 acres, one of the largest private campuses in the country. More than 6,900 students call this hillside university "home." With four distinguished

colleges, Lehigh strikes the perfect balance: It's an internationally recognized research university that has the atmosphere of a small college. PGSE&T faculty are recruited mostly from Lehigh University, but may include educational leaders from other institutions. Lehigh University is an urban campus.
