Activity five

(Pair activity):

Scenario: Ts have just won a TV contest! The prize is a brand new house in a peaceful suburban area. Before they move there,

they have to choose the neighbours they’d prefer to have. In pairs,

First, have the Ts discuss the first two questions:

a. Describe what you see in each of the six pictures. What can you infer about the people?

b. What would it be like to live with each of these people as your next-door neighbours?

After they have discussed all the pictures, set the next task:

c. Decide which of the six neighbours you would prefer to have and why. Choose three out of six.

Example:

a.

In picture one I can see a man and a woman working on a farm. They must be husband and wife. They don’t look very happy. It could be because working

the land is tough and physically draining. The woman is digging a hole in the ground using a shovel while the man is pulling out what looks like a cabbage

head. They’re wearing sweaters, which makes me think it could be autumn where they live. In the background I can also see a buck grazing.

b. I think it would be fine living with farmers next door. I bet they would be hard-working, simple, honest people and they would make great neighbours.

Secondly, because their main source of income is from farming, they’d be out on the field most of the time. That means they wouldn’t be around enough to

cause any trouble. In addition, they’d have a lot of fresh produce to sell during harvesting season which could be ideal for anyone who is their neighbour.

c. If I had a choice, I would definitely live next to the couple having a barbecue. I say this for several reasons. First of all, I love eating outdoors. Barbecues

and picnics are definitely my cup of tea. I feel that by eating outside I am much more connected to nature and I can also breathe crisp, fresh air. Moreover,

I

love parties and I’m a people person. A barbecue with the neighbours would be the perfect excuse to be around people and have a fantastic time.

Finally, I have no doubt my 18-year old daughter would love to be around fun-loving neighbours like these! She’s a party animal! :D
