HUMILITY
Humility is a virtue we don’t see much in our times. It seems that bragging, swaggering, and arrogance dominate our fashion for everything and our Internet conversations. Who hasn’t been irritated by the “trolls” who try (usually with bad grammar and poor spelling) to start an online fight with those whose opinions do not align with theirs? Our stores, catalogs, and online shopping sites are full of useless items geared in use and price to the very rich, as ordinary, useful things seem to fade off the sales scene. As the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the middle class is fading away. What is the antidote to this? Humility is a good place to start. Devotion to God is worth more than riches. “The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. God gives a home to the for-saken; [God] leads forth prisoners to prosperity.”

INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE DAY
We gather around the table of the Lord on this Labor Day weekend to share a meal. Everyone is invited! Re-gardless of the race, gender, culture, background, class, identity, income, or any other unnecessary source of di-vision, we join together to celebrate this Eucharist ban-quet. As we listen to Jesus tell a parable about invitations to a banquet while he himself is a guest at a dinner, let us consider our hospitality toward others.

CHAPTER THREE
GOD'S SALVATION: LAW AND GRACE ARTICLE 2
GRACE AND JUSTIFICATION
I. JUSTIFICATION
1987 The grace of the Holy Spirit has the power to justify us, that is, to cleanse us from our sins and to communicate to us "the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ" and through Baptism:34
But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves as dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.35
1988 Through the power of the Holy Spirit we take part in Christ's Passion by dying to sin, and in his Resurrection by being born to a new life; we are members of his Body which is the Church, branches grafted onto the vine which is himself:36
[God] gave himself to us through his Spirit. By the participation of the Spirit, we become communicants in the divine nature. . . . For this reason, those in whom the Spirit dwells are divinized.37
1989 The first work of the grace of the Holy Spirit is conversion, effecting justification in accordance with Jesus' proclamation at the beginning of the Gospel: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."38 Moved by grace, man turns toward God and away from sin, thus accepting forgiveness and righteousness from on high. "Justification is not only the remission of sins, but also the sanctification and renewal of the interior man.39
1990 Justification detaches man from sin which contradicts the love of God, and purifies his heart of sin. Justification follows upon God's merciful initiative of offering forgiveness. It reconciles man with God. It frees from the
enslavement to sin, and it heals.
1991 Justification is at the same time the acceptance of God's righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ.
Righteousness (or "justice") here means the rectitude of divine love. With justification, faith, hope, and charity are poured into our hearts, and obedience to the divine will is granted us.
1992 Justification has been merited for us by the Passion of Christ who offered himself on the cross as a living victim, holy and pleasing to God, and whose blood has become the instrument of atonement for the sins of all men.
Justification is conferred in Baptism, the sacrament of faith. It conforms us to the righteousness of God, who makes us inwardly just by the power of his mercy. Its purpose is the glory of God and of Christ, and the gift of eternal life:40
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no
distinction: since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as an expiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies him who has faith in Jesus.41
1993 Justification establishes cooperation between God's grace and man's freedom. On man's part it is expressed by the assent of faith to the Word of God, which invites him to conversion, and in the cooperation of charity with the prompting of the Holy Spirit who precedes and preserves his assent:
When God touches man's heart through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, man himself is not inactive while receiving that inspiration, since he could reject it; and yet, without God's grace, he cannot by his own free will move himself toward justice in God's sight.42
1994 Justification is the most excellent work of God's love made manifest in Christ Jesus and granted by the Holy Spirit. It is the opinion of St. Augustine that "the justification of the wicked is a greater work than the creation of heaven and earth," because "heaven and earth will pass away but the salvation and justification of the elect . . . will not pass away."43 He holds also that the justification of sinners surpasses the creation of the angels in justice, in that it bears witness to a greater mercy.
1995 The Holy Spirit is the master of the interior life. By giving birth to the "inner man,"44 justification entails the sanctification of his whole being:
Just as you once yielded your members to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now yield your members to righteousness for sanctification. . . . But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life.45

LA SALVACIÓN DE DIOS: LA LEY Y LA GRACIA
ARTÍCULO 2
GRACIA Y JUSTIFICACIÓN I. La justificación
1987 La gracia del Espíritu Santo tiene el poder de santificarnos, es decir, de lavarnos de nuestros pecados y comunicarnos “la justicia de Dios por la fe en Jesucristo” (Rm 3, 22) y por el Bautismo (cf Rm 6, 3-4):
«Y si hemos muerto con Cristo, creemos que también viviremos con él, sabiendo que Cristo, una vez resucitado de entre los muertos, ya no muere más, y que la muerte no tiene ya señorío sobre él. Su muerte fue un morir al pecado, de una vez para siempre; mas su vida, es un vivir para Dios. Así también vosotros, consideraos como muertos al pecado y vivos para Dios en Cristo Jesús» (Rm 6, 8-11).
1988 Por el poder del Espíritu Santo participamos en la Pasión de Cristo, muriendo al pecado, y en su Resurrección, naciendo a una vida nueva; somos miembros de su Cuerpo que es la Iglesia (cf 1 Co 12), sarmientos unidos a la Vid que es Él mismo (cf Jn 15, 1-4)
«Por el Espíritu Santo participamos de Dios [...] Por la participación del Espíritu venimos a ser partícipes de la naturaleza divina [...] Por eso, aquellos en quienes habita el Espíritu están divinizados» (San Atanasio de Alejandría, Epistula ad Serapionem, 1, 24).
1989 La primera obra de la gracia del Espíritu Santo es la conversión, que obra la justificación según el anuncio de Jesús al comienzo del Evangelio: “Convertíos porque el Reino de los cielos está cerca” (Mt 4, 17). Movido por la gracia, el hombre se vuelve a Dios y se aparta del pecado, acogiendo así el perdón y la justicia de lo alto. “La justificación no es solo remisión de los pecados, sino también santificación y renovación del interior
del hombre” (Concilio de Trento: DS 1528).
1990 La justificación libera al hombre del pecado que contradice al amor de Dios, y purifica su corazón. La
justificación es prolongación de la iniciativa misericordiosa de Dios que otorga el perdón. Reconcilia al hombre con Dios, libera de la servidumbre del pecado y sana.
1991 La justificación es, al mismo tiempo, acogida de la justicia de Dios por la fe en Jesucristo. La justicia designa aquí la rectitud del amor divino. Con la justificación son difundidas en nuestros corazones la fe, la esperanza y la caridad, y nos es concedida la obediencia a la voluntad divina.
1992 La justificación nos fue merecida por la pasión de Cristo, que se ofreció en la cruz como hostia viva, santa y agradable a Dios y cuya sangre vino a ser instrumento de propiciación por los pecados de todos los hombres. La justificación es concedida por el Bautismo, sacramento de la fe. Nos asemeja a la justicia de Dios que nos hace interiormente justos por el poder de su misericordia. Tiene por fin la gloria de Dios y de Cristo, y el don de la vida eterna (cf Concilio de Trento: DS 1529)
«Pero ahora, independientemente de la ley, la justicia de Dios se ha manifestado, atestiguada por la ley y los profetas, justicia de Dios por la fe en Jesucristo, para todos los que creen —pues no hay diferencia alguna; todos pecaron y están privados de la gloria de Dios— y son justificados por el don de su gracia, en virtud de la redención realizada en Cristo Jesús, a quien Dios exhibió como instrumento de propiciación por su propia sangre, mediante la fe, para mostrar su justicia, pasando por alto los pecados cometidos anteriormente, en el tiempo de la paciencia de Dios; en orden a mostrar su justicia en el tiempo presente, para ser él justo y justificador del que cree en Jesús» (Rm 3 ,21-26).
1993 La justificación establece la colaboración entre la gracia de Dios y la libertad del hombre. San Agustín afirma que “la justificación del impío [...] es una obra más grande que la creación del cielo y de la tierra” [...] porque “el cielo y la tierra pasarán, mientras [...] la salvación y la justificación de los elegidos permanecerán” (San Agustín, In Iohannis evangelium tractatus, 72, 3). Dice incluso que la justificación de los pecadores supera a la creación de los ángeles en la justicia porque manifiesta una misericordia mayor.
1995 El Espíritu Santo es el maestro interior. Haciendo nacer al “hombre interior” (Rm 7, 22 ; Ef 3, 16), la justificación implica la santificación de todo el ser:
«Si en otros tiempos ofrecisteis vuestros miembros como esclavos a la impureza y al desorden hasta desordenaros, ofrecedlos igualmente ahora a la justicia para la santidad [...] al presente, libres del pecado y esclavos de Dios, fructificáis para la santidad; y el fin, la vida eterna» (Rm 6, 19. 22).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The readings today center on mindfulness, awareness of where we stand in God’s plan. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus’ presence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mys-tery. September’s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of summer. The Christian life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful bal-ance. Even in the accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives.
Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The for-mer liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the foot of the altar’s three steps, chanting Introibo ad altare Dei, or “I will go to the altar of God,” followed by the altar servers’ response, “The God who gives joy to my youth.” Many parishioners can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once reserved for encounter with the holy, and the inti-macy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink.

LA HUMILDAD
La humildad es una virtud que no vemos mucho en estos días. Parece que la vanidad, la prepotencia y la arro-gancia dominan nuestras costumbres de todo y en nuestras conversaciones en Internet. ¿Quién no se ha molestado por los trolls de quienes intentan (por lo general con una mala gramática y falta de ortografía) empezar una pelea con aquellas personas que no coinciden con sus opiniones? Nuestras tiendas, catálogos y tiendas virtuales en línea es-tán llenas de cosas inútiles destinados al uso y por el precio a los ricos, en tanto las cosas ordinarias parecen desapare-cer de esos lugares de venta. A medida que los ricos se ha-cen más ricos, los pobres se van haciendo más pobres y la clase media va desapareciendo. ¿Cuál es el antídoto para esto? La humildad es un buen lugar para empezar. La devo-ción a Dios vale mucho más que todas las riquezas. “Padre de huérfanos, protector de viudas, Dios vive en su santa morada, Dios prepara casa a los desvalidos, libera a los cautivos y los enriquece”.

Nos congregamos alrededor de la mesa del Señor en este fin de semana del Día del Trabajo para compartir una comida. ¡Todos están invitados! No importa la raza, el género, la cul-tura, la descendencia, la clase social, la identidad, los in-gresos financieros ni ninguna otra causa innecesaria de di-visión, todos nos reunimos para celebrar este banquete euca-rísticos. Al escuchar a Jesús contar una parábola acerca de las invitaciones a un banquete mientras que él mismo es uno de los invitados a una comida, consideremos nuestra hospitali-dad hacia los demás.

Por esta época recordamos la natividad de María, madre de Jesús. María es muy popular entre muchos pueblos y en especial en los pueblos latinos. Al principio del mes de septiembre dos naciones toman la fiesta de su nacimiento para recordarla bajo el titulo de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre en Cuba y de Nuestra Señora de Coromoto en Venezuela.
La Virgen del Cobre fue descubierta en el siglo XVI por dos indígenas y un niño africano llamados los tres Juanes, cuando estos fueron al mar en busca de sal. Después de una fuerte tempestad ellos encontraron flotando sobre las olas una pequeña imagen de María con el Niño Dios en brazos. La imagen flotaba sobre una tabla que decía yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad. Milagrosamente la imagen estaba seca.
También en el siglo XVI la Virgen se le apareció al cacique de los indígenas Coromoto en Venezuela. Estos se resistían a la evangelización y ella se apareció sobre las aguas invitándolos al bautizo cristiano.
Estas dos manifestaciones marianas llevan a Jesús en brazos recordándonos que María nada puede sin Cristo.
