Love God. Love each other. Serve the world.

John’s Letters: A Life of Fellowship

Sunday of Lent

March 18 & 21, 2021

This is how we know what love is

I love my home. I love the ocean. I love my spouse. People use the word love for all kinds of things; sure, they're all loves. But what distinguishes Christian love? How do you know you know Christ's love? John gets us to the answer. Enjoy your time today with brothers and sisters; together we’re becoming more convinced of Christ's love and more able to love as he did.

To receive 250-word devotions on 1 John 3:11-18 this week, Monday – Friday, go to st-andrew-online.org/devotions.

Dear guests

• We’re glad you’re here and would love to hear from you. Please fill out our online Check In at our website. Go to st-andrew-online.org and click on “Check In.”

• If this is your first time with us, please stop at the Welcome Center for a gift just for you. • Needs or questions? Feel free to ask an usher, greeter, or the person next to you. • Restrooms are down the education wing on the right.

• If you’d like a private nursing room, there is one with a changing table located outside the sanctuary. There are also changing tables in all restrooms. If you need assistance, feel free to ask an usher.

• Subscribe to The Weekly, our email newsletter by filling out the online Check In at

st-andrew-online.org or pick up a hard copy at the Welcome Center.

• This folder follows the biblical purpose for Jesus’ church: worship God, nurture the faith he gives, and serve others. It’s simple. It’s church. We’re glad you’re here to enjoy it with us.

250-word devotions, Monday-Friday St-andrew-online.org/devotions

11 This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be

like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my

brothers, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love

our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates his brother is a

murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay

down our lives for our brothers. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need

but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18 Dear children, let us not love with

words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19 This then is how we know that we belong to the

truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20 whenever our hearts condemn us. For God

is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

Highlights

Good Friday and Easter postcard

Easter is just a few weeks away! The number one reason a guest will attend on Easter is because they were invited by a friend. Whom will you be inviting to worship with you? If you are a virtual worshiper, whom can you invite to worship with you online? If you will be worshiping on-site, whom can you invite to meet you here that morning? The postcards are a tool for you to use to have the conversation. Grab some from the display in the atrium.

Impact

Baptism makes us children of God and blesses us with the forgiveness of sins. Wait a second . . . Jesus was without sin, so why was he baptized? Let Mr. Tim Rimpel, a gifted theologian from Illinois Lutheran High School, tell you. Listen to St. Andrew's weekly podcast Impact. Impact is

available at st-andrew-online.org/impact and on Spotify and Amazon Music. All previous episodes are archived for you.

St. Andrew devotions

We are so incredibly blessed to be able to come together and hear the truth of God's Word every Thursday and Sunday. And when we go further and immerse ourselves in that truth, our faith grows. What blessings come with a growing faith! If you are not already signed up, consider signing up for these Monday – Friday devotions. They are terrific faith boosters just for you. Check them out at st-andrew-online.org/resources/devotions.

FUEL

"I will praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Think about this: David had a very limited knowledge of how our bodies work compared to what we know today, and he was still in total awe! FUEL will discuss this passage on Sunday at 7 PM. See you then! See the Weekly

or contact Mr. KJ (mark.kjenstad@st-andrew-online.org) for the Zoom link.

FUEL fire

"I love campfires so much they bring tears to my eyes!" LOL! All St. Andrew teens are invited to the FUEL campfire on Saturday, March 27, 3:30 – 5:00 PM at St. Andrew. Bring a chair and that's it! We've got plenty of wood, hot chocolate, and yummy snacks ready to go. Feel free to invite a friend.

Service and Outreach

Missional Moment

How are you preparing for Easter? Have you paused to plan when you will be worshiping? It is hard to invite someone to join you if you don't know when you will be worshiping. Take a few moments today to look at the worship times above. Determine when you will be worshiping for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. Put those on your calendar so you have a concrete event to invite a friend, family member, or co-worker to join you.

Mission Trips

Mission Trip registrations have come in! We will have 14 participants in Mission Madison, and we will be sending eight teens to Wesley Chapel, Florida. Please keep these teens and leaders in your prayers as plans come together for them to serve and share Christ in our community and

beyond.

March Monthly Mission Partner | Middleton Outreach Ministries

Each month we select a ministry that is outside of St. Andrew to support with our gifts and to be remembered in our prayers. This month we partner with Middleton Outreach Ministries who has been an instrumental resource to our community throughout the pandemic, serving with not only a food and clothing pantry, but a social service agency helping many with rent and utility assistance. See the Weekly for the link to a video from MOM with an update on their work.

Westside Christian School

Call news

Mr. Dettman, St. Andrew Lutheran Church, and Westside Christian School, Greetings during the season of Lent in the name of our suffering Savior.

I was excited to receive the call on Wednesday to serve at Westside Christian School as a 5th – 8th

math teacher and religion teacher. I’ve spoken with Pastor Hunter and Principal Pucci briefly about the call and I look forward to learning more about the ministry at St. Andrew and Westside. I’m excited to see how I would potentially fit into Westside’s current ministry and future plans. I ask for your prayers as I deliberate this call. I know that whatever my decision is, the Lord will continue to bless my ministry and the ministry at St. Andrew and Westside.

Your brother in Christ, Karl B. Kuschel

Dear members of St. Andrew Lutheran Church,

Last Wednesday, I received your call to serve at Westside Christian School as the grade 5-8 English Language Arts teacher. I'm writing to acknowledge the divine call that you sent to me. I humbly ask for your prayers in the weeks ahead as I consider where the Lord might best use me in his kingdom. I ask for your patience and understanding as I wrestle in prayer, deliberating between the personal calling I have as a senior lecturer at Northern Arizona University and the public call to serve among you in Middleton. I will also keep you and your wonderful ministry in my prayers!

Preparation for the Lord’s Supper

St. Andrew views the Lord’s Supper as a powerful disbursement of Jesus’ grace. We receive it with joy and treat it with respect. Communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life, and worship. So we ask you to judge us; discover what we believe and determine if you wish to be one with us. Talk to our pastors about preparing to receive this in the future.

Paul instructed, “Let a person examine himself and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup” 1 Co 11:28. Questions like these help us examine ourselves:

• Am I sorry for my sin?

• Do I trust that Jesus has lived and died to save me from my sin?

• Do I believe that Jesus’ body and blood are truly present to assure me of forgiveness?

• Do I intend, with God’s help, to live a more God-pleasing life?

Prayers to use before and after receiving the Lord’s Supper are found on page 11 in the front of the hymnal beneath your chair.

Joining Jesus on His Mission takes preparation on our part.

Ponder this question this week in your devotions and conversations: What good can we DO around here?
