HITECH Grant

The national Health and Human Services Department, as part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 (ARRA), provided funds for institutions of higher education to train healthcare and information technology workers in electronic health records conversion. The project is designed to prepare workers within six months in the kind of computerized health information systems that are being installed by hospitals and medical offices across the nation.

Community colleges funded under this initiative will establish intensive training programs that can be com-pleted in six months or less. Pima Community College is working closely with the Arizona Regional Extension Center (REC) to develop this program and plans to train 300 individuals in electronic medical records conver-sion and maintenance over the two years of the grant.

Upon acceptance into the program, students are required to meet with the program advisor. Selection is based upon evaluation of a complete application, which includes the following:

• Application for Admission into Health IT Workforce Roles Training;

• Detailed résumé demonstrating work experience related to Health Care, Health Information Technology/Management or Information Technology;

• Student Assessment Form;

• Unofficial college transcript(s) for each college/university attended;

• Copies of licensure, certification, credential and awarding organization if applicable;
