EHR Training for LSU Rotations

All LSU house officers are required to fulfill EHR training for each rotation site at which

they will practice. It is the primary responsibility of the program coordinator to organize

this training, but the GME office provides assistance.

See the requirements for EHR training at three major training sites below.

Interim LSU Hospital: EPIC medical record system

Training dates: (1) Orientation at beginning of academic year; (2) first

week of each month; (3) third week of each month

Please note: Training at Ochsner can be verified and counted by ILH.

House officers who have completed EPIC training elsewhere should do the

following:

Notify their LSU program coordinator

Ask their previous institution for training certificate or transcript to

confirm modules of training.

NOTE: Training in EPIC versions earlier than EPIC 2010, or

who trained in EPIC as medical students, WILL HAVE to train

in EPIC at LSUHSC or ILH, as those modules of EPIC are not

accepted here.

Ochsner Hospitals:

Please note: Training at ILH can be verified and counted by Ochsner

Our Lady of the Lake (OLOL): Utilize PowerChart (inpatient), FirstNet (ED), SurgiNet

(surgery), and SAAnesthesia (Anesthesia)

Training dates: first business day of resident’s rotation month.

o

Typical class times are listed below. These time/locations may be

subject to change, but all changes will be communicated to house

officers via email prior to the start of their rotation:

PowerChart: 7:30am – 11:30am

FirstNet: 12:30pm-4:30pm

SurgiNet: 7:30 – 11:30am included at end of PowerChart class

SAAnesthesia:

4 hour course in morning or afternoon pending

Residents and their coordinator will receive an email at least 2 weeks in

advance from OLOL GME Services Coordinator with training

information and dates.

Refresher courses also available for residents returning to OLOL for the

second time in an academic year.

OLOL Graduate Medical Education Office

Resident Orientation & Computer Training

The OLOL GME Office provides orientation and computer training for all residents and fellows rotating at OLOL. The OLOL GME Office schedules orientation and computer training based upon the most recent resident rotation schedule the office has on file for each program. House officers will not be scheduled for training and will not receive their ID Badge, Username, etc. if they have an incomplete application.

Basic orientation and computer training occurs on the first business day of the month of the house officer’s rotation. Sessions begin at 7:30am or 12:30pm depending on the house officer’s assigned rotation. Classes are NOT held on weekends or holidays.

Residents/Fellows are contacted via email at least 2 weeks in advance by the OLOL GME Services Coordinator who provides the date/time/location of the house officer’s assigned orientation and computer training session. The GME Services Coordinator also copies the house officer’s program coordinator on these emails to ensure that the message is received. It is very important that all house officers check their email prior to their scheduled OLOL rotation to receive this important and time-sensitive information.

Completion of orientation and computer training is mandatory for all house officers to begin rotations at OLOL.

Overview of Resident Orientation

Residents are provided the following for their OLOL rotations: - ID Badge,

- Username - Dictation #,

- Institutional DEA # suffix **for residents spending at least 3 months at OLOL

In addition to the overview of the orientation packet, all residents are required to complete 3-4 electronic orientation modules within the first 2 weeks of rotations at OLOL.

Computer Training

Following review of the orientation packet, residents are provided computer training in the application that will be utilized during their rotations at OLOL. The following training sessions are offered:

1) PowerChart (for inpatient rotations) 2) FirstNet (for ED rotations)

3) SurgiNet (brief add-on training to PowerChart for surgery residents )

4) SAAnesthesia (a separate software utilized by Anesthesia house officers and faculty) Training Schedule

Computer training in each of the above sessions is provided to residents assigned to rotations at OLOL on the first business day of their rotation month. All residents rotating at OLOL for the first time in the current academic year are required to attend assigned orientation and training classes. Residents are contacted via email in advance by the OLOL GME Services Coordinator who provides the

date/time/location of the resident’s assigned orientation and computer training session.
