Employers and individuals alike are searching for a way to create meaning out of health care data that is all too often kept in silos and used for transactional purposes. Effective strategic planning to achieve healthy employees requires the ability to integrate information at both the employer and individual level and transform that information into action.

Cerner’s robust reporting capabilities integrate information from multiple sources, including claims, clinical, wellness and human resources. Our monthly, quarterly and semi-annual reports enable establishment of priorities and strategies that will have the most impact on your health objectives. We use our actionable insight to continuously identify existing and future

opportunities for you to be able to address and avoid the personal and financial costs of poor health.

We use this same insight to help individuals more deeply understand how they can create a healthier future and create and track their performance against their personal health improvement plan.

Employees are engaged and can make smart health and consumer choices because they have information to help them — whether it’s the results from their health screening, activity tracking or recommendations on lower-cost medications. The problems employers have (rising expenses, declining health) cannot be solved simply by implementing services. Employers, employees and providers alike need to have aligned incentives to create change on a personal level, as well as across the health care system. For employers, this means having the right incentives in place to promote health. Benefit plans should be designed to reward individuals for healthy behaviors and make it easy to make the right health decisions.

Cerner isn’t merely focused on managing costs as they rise, but rather on addressing the root of the problem by helping improve the health status of all members. We collaborate with employers to determine the best incentive structure for their employees.

Cerner’s incentive management system can combine participation- and outcomes-based incentives that evolve and mature over time to continuously raise expectations of how employees should invest in their health. By offering strong incentives that reward healthy behaviors, employees and employers alike can achieve significant savings on health improvement. Cerner’s rewards program enables employees to earn and track points during the year that can result in significant savings on their health benefit premiums and money added to their health savings accounts.

Toyota’s goal of reducing workers’ compensation costs led to exploring on-site care. It found Cerner knew the business best. Cerner was the only company that brought a complete game plan to the table, addressing all of Toyota’s objectives. One real success has been the on-site pharmacy, because Toyota saw how to align its interests with those of its associates and care providers. Providers are able to give appropriate care and then direct individuals to low-cost medications available right on-site. In addition to commonly prescribed medications, the health center dispenses condition-management medications when associates participate in required

consultations. Associates appreciate the health center, and Toyota has seen dramatic savings in its total health care costs. Overall, the company is confident in Cerner’s commitment to improving the health of its population.

“ Our associates like the convenience and speed of our health center, and the high quality of services. They can go during the workday. It makes them happy. They can see a doctor and get the medication they need. From our standpoint, we’ve saved an hour and a half of time they would be gone from the facility. So it benefits everybody.”

In an increasingly social environment, Cerner knows that individuals become more engaged in their health when it is social, fun and competitive. So we’re changing the way people think about health.

Cerner fosters individual engagement through weight loss challenges, steps competitions and wellness incentives using web-based applications that integrate information into Cerner Health, an online personal health record. While weight loss and steps competitions have been around for a long time, Cerner enables another layer of sustained engagement by facilitating the competition through these web-based applications, high-tech weigh-in kiosks and devices that integrate the competition-related activity with an individual’s personal health record. Employees can access results and track incentives at any time with their Cerner Health account.

Getting healthy. Having fun.

KC Slimdown Challenge

Client partner: 85 employers Kansas City area More than 5,000 individuals

Employers are major stakeholders in the health of their employees, but many are struggling to shift the focus from care to health. To address this issue, Cerner created the KC Slimdown Challenge. The 10-week weight loss competition was open to companies large and small. For the 85 that signed on, it provided the infrastructure to add an easy wellness program that would motivate employees in a fun and exciting way. Employees weighed in at participating companies and at YMCAs. They had free access to the Cerner Health personal health record to track and manage their health, even after the competition was over. The 5,000 participants lost more than 23,000 pounds, an average of nearly 5 per person, with Hallmark coming out on top. Cerner was excited and humbled to have the chance to make a positive health impact in our own community.

“ This was a great experience for our company, reinforcing how important it is to lead a healthy lifestyle. Also the exposure to the Cerner personal health accounts was a way to show our employees the future of health care and how being accountable to yourself can oftentimes be the motivation needed to accomplish your goals. Our goal was 10 pounds per person. And we did it. Our 48 employees lost an average of 10.5 pounds over the 10-week period.”
