1. INTRODUCTION

This document primarily is the preliminary analysis of deck load including its

strength of the typical Flat Top Barge 180Feet x 50Feet x 10Feet transporting

various cargo loading to support the construction and marine operation in

China National Offshore Oil Corporation South East Sumatera (CNOOC-SES)

region, offshore Indonesia.

2. PURPOSE

This analysis report is produced to cover the basic scopes as follow:

1) To check and determine actual maximum deck load onboard barge deck

to be less than 1.5 Ton/meter

as per Client (CNOOC-SES) requirement.

2) To check barge global longitudinal strength based on calculated maximum

deck load onboard following the result of purpose no. 1 as above.

3) To check barge frame strength based on calculated maximum deck load

onboard following the result of purpose no. 1 as above too.

3. REFERENCE

All calculations are executed in accordance with the following references:

1) Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (BKI) – Rules for The Classification and

Construction of Sea-Going Steel Ships – Volume II Rules for Hull - 2004.

4. BARGE

DESCRIPTION

The model barge in this check is a typical deck cargo barge of all steel

construction. The hull is divided by one (1) longitudinal and (6) transverse

bulk heads forming a total of 14 watertight tanks / compartments, with data:

DECK LOAD AND CAPACITY

5.1

The cargo loading which will be loaded on barge deck is assumed to be

various since there is no detail information on it. However, with assumption

that the load is uniformly distributed load (UDL); this method is quite

conservative to check the actual & maximum load onboard.

5.2

Area of cargo loading to be designed as per normal operational practice in

common marine & shipping operation, with details:

5.3

The initial preliminary total loading which is expected to be stowed is

approximately 700 Ton. Considering about this value and loading area as

above, so the calculated actual deck load shall be 1.094 Ton/Meter. This

load is still less than 1.50 Ton/Meter as required, so this is still acceptable to

be applied.

5.3 Within

the

allowable

deck load 1.50 Ton/Meter, so this barge deck should

have capacity to carry maximum 960.12 Ton cargo loading into the assumed

deck loading area as mentioned in section 5.2. However, in order to get a

normal practice method, the cargo load 950 Ton is safely enough to be

applied in all analysis.

5.4

Detail of deck loading analysis is presented in Appendix-1 of this report.

6.

GLOBAL LONGITUDINAL STRENGTH

6.1

Once the maximum cargo loading obtained (950 Ton), the barge global

longitudinal strength shall be carried out to check whether within this load the

barge will still have adequate shear and bending moment capacity or not.

6.2

The cargo barge is planned to be dry tow (without water ballast inside) and as

with minimizing the partially filled tanks as much as possible. Both still water

and sine wave (Sagging and Hogging) cases are investigated. For the sine

wave case, the selected wave height is 3.50 meters and wave length is set

equal to the barge length overall.

6.3 The allowable bending moment is calculated based on minimum Mid-ship

Section Modulus in accordance with Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (BKI) Rules for

Classification & Construction of Seagoing Ships, Volume II Rules for Hull,

Section 5 Longitudinal Strength, Sub-section 5.C.2 BKI 2004 with ASTM A-36

material grade being used. The calculated allowable bending moment for this

typical barge 180Ft is:

The allowable shear force is also calculated based on minimum Mid-ship

Shear Area from the vessel’s construction drawings; which is computed from

two (2) of existing Side-Shell Plates 8.0 mm thickness and one (1) of existing

Longitudinal Bulkhead plate 8.0 mm thickness, using ASTM A-36 material

grade. The calculated allowable shear force for this typical barge 180Ft is:

6.7

The barge longitudinal strength is calculated using the program “MAXSURF

PRO & HYDROMAX”, an integrated Naval Architecture and Ship Construction

software, with first computes the hydrostatic properties of the barge. For the

given loading condition the program would then iterated to obtain hydrostatic

equilibrium with the barge afloat on the same wave or in still water. The Shear

force and bending moment are computed at the barge hull model using the

weight and effective buoyancy of the hull.

7.

DECK FRAME STRENGTH

7.1

Typically, once the maximum cargo loading obtained (950 Ton), the deck

frame strength of barge shall be checked due to this load whether the frame

will still have adequate strength capacity (especially on Shear and Von Mises

one) or not.

7.2

The structural finite element program “STAADPRO” is also used to generate

the structural analysis of the barge frame model. Typical single transverse

frame of the barge is modeled in 2D model using plate element method based

on barge construction drawings. The maximum deck load is applied as point

load at each specified location based on total 950 Ton loading.

The analysis is carried out in accordance with AISC codes in post structural

checks, with using the allowable stresses are as follows:

In accordance with industry standard practice and AISC Allowable Stress

Design, one third overload allowances for stresses cannot be applied for

under-deck framing structures.
