Low-ell wasofone ofthe firstfamilies of the
continent.
He
wasborn in Salisbury,whereat that time the Lowells were
very numerous; andthey werethesame
family as the
Newbury
Lowell's, allhavingsprung from Percival Lowell.
From
him was Rev.John
Lowell, firstminister of Newburyport, whose son
John,the great Americanstatesmanand jurist, in theconvention 1780, was the
author of the declarationin the bill of ofrights:

not only held the highest rank in his

Lowellcity was named; and he had a
son,
who
amid the ruins of Thebes, inEgypt,
made
awill bequeathingaquar-terofa million of dollars to found the
LowellInstitute,ofwhoai Everett wrote

'"The few sentences penned with a tired hand on the top ofa palace of thePharaohs, willdomore for

im-provementthan was done by all that
gloomy dynasty."
Of
the samefamilyand nearlyallied were Rev. Dr. Loweli of Boston; his sister,Mrs. Putnam,
who
could read twentylanguages, and
who
wrote so eloquently for Kossuth and

who
are the pride and glory ofAmerican liberty and literature.
