The Role of the Synod of Bishops

In the words of Pope Francis, the Synod of Bishops is a body that, “manifests the solicitude of the College of Bishops for the needs of the People of God and for com- munion among the Churches.” The Synod is a means of gathering informa on on a par cular theme from local Churches. The Synodal Assembly has a “consulta ve role, offering informa on and counsel to the Roman Pon ff on various ecclesial ques ons, under the guid- ance of the Holy Spirit.” (Pope Francis using the words of Pope St. Paul VI). The Synodal Process, then, is to be a suitable instrument to give voice to the en re People of God.

In Our Parish...

THE DESTINY OF ALL MORTAL FLESH

The celebra on of today’s feast on a Sunday is unu- sual on our Roman Catholic calendar. Our observance of the Lord’s Day is held in such high esteem that few other feasts replace it. Occasionally there is a feast—usually of one of the saints—in which the saving power of God in Christ is so uniquely focused that the Roman rite deems it worthy of celebra on on the Lord’s Day. Today is such a feast. Yet some are surprised at the brevity of the dog- ma in its en rety: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The Roman Catholic Church never defined any specifics or par culars about the event itself. It is not in the scriptures. There are no verifiable eyewit- ness accounts. At its core, the dogma reveals in Mary the des ny of all mortal flesh, and reinforces our creedal be- lief in resurrec on of the body. This feast strengthens our faith, defined last week in Hebrews as the realiza on of things hoped for. We find, in Mary, that realiza on of what we all hope for, what Paul today affirms: “In Christ shall all be brought to life” (1 Corinthians 15:22).

Hail, Holy Queen Enthroned Above

1. Hail, holy Queen enthroned above,O Maria. Hail, Queen of mercy and of love, O Maria. Triumph, all ye Cherubim; Sing with us, ye Seraphim. Heav'n and earth resound the hymn: Salve, Salve, Salve, Regina.

2. The cause of joy to all below, O Maria. The spring through which all graces flow, O Maria. Angels, all your praises bring; Earth and heaven, with us sing; All crea-

on echoing: Salve, Salve, Salve, Regina.

Text: Salve, Regina, mater misericordia; c.1080; tr. Roman Hymnal, 1884; st. 2-3 adapt. by M. Owen Lee, CSB, b.1930

Sing of Mary, Pure and Lowly

1. Sing of Mary pure and lowly, Virgin mother undefiled. Sing of God's own Son most holy, who became her li le child. Fairest Child of fairest Mother, God the Lord who came to earth. Word-made-flesh, our very brother, takes our nature by his birth.

2. Glory be to God the Father; Glory be to God the Son; Glory be to God the Spirit; Glory to the Three in One. From the heart of blessed Mary, from all saints the song ascends, and the Church the strain reechoes unto earth's remotest ends.

Hail Mary: Gentle Woman

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blest is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death. Amen.

Refrain: Gentle woman, quiet light, morning star, so strong and bright, gentle Mother, peaceful dove, teach us wisdom; teach us love.

1. You were chosen by the Father; you were chosen for the Son. You were chosen from all women and for wom- an, shining one.

2. Blessed are you among women, blest in turn all wom- en, too. Blessed they with peaceful spirits. Blessed they with gentle hearts.

Can cle of the Turning

1. My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the God of my heart is great, and my spirit sings of the wondrous things that you bring to the ones who wait. You fixed your sight on your servant's plight, and my weakness you did not spurn, so from east to west shall my name be blest. Could the world be about to turn?

Refrain: My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your jus ce burn. Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn!

2. Though I am small, my God, my all, you work great things in me, and your mercy will last from the depths of the past to the end of the age to be. Your very name puts the proud to shame, and to those who would for you yearn, you will show your might, put the strong to flight, for the world is about to turn.
