Cloud Computing
Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is a model for enabling
ubiquitous network access to a shared
pool of configurable computing resources.
Characteristics
On-Demand
Self-Service Consumer can provision computing capabilities as needed
automatically without requiring human interaction.
Network Access Capabilities are available over the network and accessed through
standard mechanisms.
Resource Pooling Computing resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers using
a multi-tenant model and dynamically assigned according to
demand.
Elasticity Capabilities can be elastically provisioned and released to scale
rapidly outward and inward commensurate with demand and
appears unlimited.
Measured Service Cloud systems meters all resource usage automatically and usage
details are transparently accessible by the consumer.
Service Models
Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
• At its basic provides on-demand access to
compute, storage and network resources.
• May also include access to firewalls, VPNs, etc.
Platform as a service (PaaS)
• Provides on-demand access to a fully functional
application environment, which is able to scale
up or down as needed.
• Consumers can choose architectural capabilities
and programming language execution
environment.
• May include integration with developer tools like
CI/CD.
• Developers only need to push software code
and data to the PaaS environment
Software as a service (SaaS)
• Provides consumers access to a fully functional
application, either via a marketplace or multi-
tenanted model.

Value Proposition
• Its all about operational efficiency and scalability
• Heterogeneous Legacy vs Homogenous Cloud
– Forces physical infrastructure to standardize
• Easier to manage
• Less to learn and manage (lower number of systems)
• Smaller teams to manage large number of systems
– Provides a common and easy to understand interface for provisioning and managing
resources
• Self-service, common interface and API equals better agility
