“During this senior year I tried to not focus on all the things
I was missing, but all the things I could do.
Thank you senior class for making my high school experience so
memorable.”
Callaway Knutson, staff-selected speaker
“All these years we’ve been asked the questions of who we want to be and who we are. Going into our futures you get to have full control, you get to dictate how
you approach your future. We are all going to mess up, but how are you going to react? What are you going to do next, to learn and move forward? I think the best
part of our class is our ability to coexist while being so beautifully different.”
Jordan Cagle, student-selected speaker
“No matter the challenges we faced through high school...we finished. We are here because we put in that work, effort and kept a relentless spirit. I can’t wait to
hear what the Lake Stevens High School Class of 2021 will accomplish in the future.”
Cooper Clairmont, ASB president
O
n June 7, a total of 585 Lake Stevens High School students received diplomas. This year’s graduates earned more than $2 million in scholarships and awards. Members of the Class of 2021 aspire to bescientists, teachers, doctors, engineers, electricians, and musicians—just to name a few. “On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Lake Stevens School District, it is my great honor and privilege as your Superintendent to certify that these students have met all standards and graduation requirements set forth by Lake Stevens School District and the State of Washington. You are
hereby awarded your high school diplomas. I present the Class of 2021.”
Dr. Amy Beth Cook, Superintendent
“In September we were warned this would be a wild ride and that we would be dealing with change—a whole lot of change—and I am sure you would agree it had its moments;
unsettled. And I am sure that after nine months you most likely agree—this year continued to present many firsts for all of us. And yet...we are here today and
the year has concluded with a roaring success. This is in part due to your willingness to adapt and you were able
to get here today as a result of your hard work, grit, perseverance
and Viking relentlessness!”

Start and dismissal times for the 2021-22 school year
W
e are excited to welcome back all of our students for full-time, in-person instruction this fall! Start times for the 2021-22 school year have changed. We surveyed our employees, families and secondary students about school start times in the fall of 2019. Overall, we have been studying this important topic for more than two years with a committee made up of administrators, teachers, district staff members, parents and community members. We sincerely appreciate everyone who took the opportunity to provide their feedback.
The survey information and recommendations from the School Start Time Committee were presented to the School Board in March of 2020, and the decision was made to move forward with this change.
Following a thorough research review, the School Start Time
Committee identified several benefits of later start times for secondary students. These include:
• Increased sleep
• Fewer school absences
• Mental health benefits
• Lower occurrence of teen car accidents
The new school start times also align nicely with the schedule that our sixth- through 12th-graders followed during the 2020-21 school year.

Congratulations to our 2020-21 retirees!
O
ur Board of Directors honored the 2020-21 retirees at its May 26 meeting. Overall, these employees have served more than 777 years to our students, schools, district and community. Thank you, and congratulations!Summer learning resources for all ages

Message from Your Superintendent
T
he end of a school year is an exciting time filled with celebrations, transitions and reflections. While this certainly has been an untraditional year, we still found ample opportunities to celebrate our students and employees for their work and dedication. On June 7 it was my honor to be a part of presenting 585 Lake Stevens High School students with their diplomas. This year’s graduates earned more than $2 million in scholarships and awards. Members of the Class of 2021 aspire to be scientists, teachers, doctors, engineers, electricians, and musicians—just to name a few. We also have several students who will proudly serve our country in the Armed Forces. I am so proud of these students. The graduation ceremony best defines what we are all here to do. I hope you share in the pride and accomplishments of these amazing students.
The end of the school year is also an important time to recognize the significant contributions of our staff members. We are fortunate to have experienced and capable employees. Each year, we recognize staff members who are retiring and those who have contributed 25 years of service. This year, 33 retirees were honored and 18 employees reached 25 years of service. Their expertise and professionalism are very much appreciated.
Free summer meals are being offered on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at North Lake Middle School from June 23 to Aug. 18.
Preordering opens the previous Thursday at 9 a.m. This is an important program for our community, and I invite you to participate and to help spread the word so that all of the children in Lake Stevens have access to a nutritious meal while schools are not in session. More information is available on our website, or by calling 425-335-1561.
We encourage students and their families to continue learning this summer. There are a
variety of resources available on our district and school websites. These free resources are sorted by grade to make them easily accessible for students and families.
As we finish the school year, I want to thank you.
It has been a tremendous honor to serve you for the past 38 years. This has always been more than just a job for me. The many relationships I created throughout my time in Lake Stevens are what is most important to me. I wish you all the best with the coming school year, and am cautiously optimistic to return to a sense of normalcy this fall.
I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing summer! The 2021-22 school year starts on Wednesday, Sept. 1.
Warm regards,
Amy Beth Cook, Ed.D.

everal Lake Stevens students have once again earned Microsoft certifications, and top honors, in the Washington State Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Competition, and the MOS U.S.Nationals Competition. Three students are headed to the virtual MOS World Championship this fall.
These students mastered Microsoft programs as part of the Computer Applications course, taught by Karen Coulombe, at Cavelero Mid High School. The course prepares students for the MOS programs in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel that leads to their Microsoft Office certification—a key benchmark sought by employers.
“The preparation that we provide for this exam has proven its value as the students have earned top spots at the state and national level for the past five years.” said Coulombe.
Nearly 200 Washington state institutions—both high school and college level—compete for 12 championship positions annually.
These winners go on to the national competition, and from there compete worldwide.
There were six MOS U.S.
Champions from six different software categories. Three of the six are Lake Stevens students!
• Sean Crawford, 1st Place in the USA Excel 2016, $3,000 and a new Surface. Sean will represent the United States at the World MOS Competition this fall.
• Trevor Wilson, 1st Place in the USA Word 2019, $3,000 and a new Surface. Trevor will represent the United States at the World MOS Competition this fall.
• Jeremiah Wilson, 1st Place in the USA Word 2019, $3,000 and a new Surface. Jeremiah will represent the United States at the World MOS Competition this fall.
• Mason Lohnes, 2nd Place in the USA PowerPoint 2016,
$1,500 and a new Xbox The 2021 MOS U.S. National Championship was originally scheduled to take place in Orlando, Florida. However, because of the pandemic, it took place online, and combined the 2019-20 with the 2020-21 champions. Each student’s qualifying exam score and time was entered into the nationwide competition with over half a million exams entered from students ages 13-22 across the country.
The top three positions, in each of the 12 categories, were notified and invited to the online awards ceremony on June 23, when the US
National Winners were announced to move forward to the worldwide stage.
This school year, amidst pandemic learning, students learned the program and chose to compete—almost entirely with virtual platforms. More than 200 certifications were earned this year, and five Cavelero Mid High School ninth-grade students earned their position as #1 in the state!
The 2020-21 Washington State winners were:
• Isaac Anderson, Powerpoint 2016
• Bella Johnson, PowerPoint 2019
• Ruby Pfeifer, Word 2016
• Jeremiah Wilson, Excel 2019
“This is truly remarkable,” said Coulombe. “These students learned these new skills with
Microsoft simulated programs on chromebooks.”
In the 2019-20 school year, six Lake Stevens students prevailed in the huge statewide competition and earned their place as one of the 12 state representatives, moving forward to the 2020 MOS US Nationals in Dallas, Texas.
The 2019-20 winners were:
• Natalie Anderson, PowerPoint 2019
• Sean Crawford, Excel 2016
• McKaden Hein, Word 2016
• Mason Lohnes, PowerPoint 2016
• Cassius Peterson, Excel 2019
• Trevor Wilson, Word 2019 Learn more about the MOS Championships at:
