From elite athletes to weekend warriors, there’s something for everyone at Mud Endeavor events

Saturday’s Mud Endeavor event at Castle Canyon in Brooksville brought runners from all walks together to take on what is very likely the most hilly course in the region, maybe the state.

“The hills here are very challenging,” Vivien Bazelais of Palmetto said.

The venue is an abandoned lime rock mine built in 1925 by the Camp Concrete Rock Company. The “Cas- tle” namesake comes from the remnants of a hard rock processing plant, which used a conveyor belt to trans- port rock into the original wooden structure. The interi- or of the structure was reinforced with poured concrete and that structure remains today and has the look of a shell of a castle.

Much of the topography of the area is somewhat due to the dynamics of the area but also it is due to the quarries dug there by the mining company and long since overgrown with grass and other foliage, making for steep grades and sheer drops in elevation. Piles of raw lime rock dot the landscape, adding to the venues unique fl avor.

The starting lists were packed with runners ready to take on the course and the event attracted athletes from Perry to Palmetto. It was the perfect venue for 1st Sergeant Kenneth Rosier and volunteer Army Instruc- tor Tyizanna Floyd to bring their cadets from Perry High School to train for the JROTC Raider Challenge.

“This is kind of a test run for our kids to try out for our Raiders team,” Rosier said. “They do a lot of

Zephyrhills evens its record at 3-3 with third straight win to

revive playoff hopes

Despite a 30-point halftime lead another blow- out win for Zephyrhills was not in the cards. None- theless, last Friday night’s 44-22 win over Sunlake, which came up short in a valiant comeback bid, lifted the host Bulldogs to a 3-3 record. Even more important, it revived their playoff hopes.

“It’s good but it’s not, because that was a tale of two halves,” said Zephyrhills coach Nick Car- roll, a former Sunlake assistant who was not too thrilled that his team was outscored 15-7 in the sec- ond half. “Hats off to Sunlake. They played a heck- uva second half. I knew that it was going to be a battle.”

The Bulldogs, whose run of fi ve straight play- off appearances seemed to be in jeopardy after a disappointing 0-3 start, have won three games in a row. They are 2-0 in Class 5A, District 11 with a game this Friday at district foe Anclote.

“I think they’re starting to believe in our

system,” Carroll said of his players. “We’re making more plays on the off ensive side of the ball. We’re causing turnovers and we’re scoring on special teams and defense.”

Zephyrhills built a 37-7 halftime lead and it seemed to be just a matter of time before a running clock would speed up a second straight blowout win. The Bulldogs were coming off a lopsided 62-0 shutout of district rival Tarpon Springs.

The Seahawks started off the third quarter with two straight touchdowns and a two-point conversion to pull within 37-22. But an unsuccess- ful fourth-down play gave Zephyrhills the football at Sunlake’s 24-yard line and the home team put the game away on Zyre Roundtree’s 2-yard scor- ing run to account for the fi nal margin.

Zephyrhills got 205 passing yards with two touchdowns from quarterback T.J. Jackson, a lefthanded sophomore and fi rst-year starter who played on the junior varsity team last season.

Tre Gallimore had both of those touchdown catches, one for 20 yards and another that went for 72 on a slant-in. Gallimore added a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown.

“I just try to bring energy,” said Gallimore, a junior whose three touchdowns were two shy of the fi ve he scored last year in a junior varsity game.

Aside from Gallimore, four other receivers

Season fi nale between longtime rivals gives Pasco a junior varsity win while

Stewart takes the varsity games

Pasco and Stewart opened the 2019 middle school volleyball season in Zephyrhills last month.

On Tuesday night in Dade City, the longtime rivals closed out the regular season.

Coaches, players and fans on both sides could take some satisfaction with the results of this year’s fi nal games. Pasco swept the junior varsity games 2-0 while visiting Stewart made it a 2-0 sweep at the var- sity level.

Earlier in the season I was the other way around with the Stewart JV and Pasco varsity winning. Those contests, however, were treated as preseason exhibi- tions and did not count in the standings.

Afterward, both coaches spoke of the intense, yet friendly rivalry between the schools in neighboring cities.

“We like playing against them,” said Pasco coach Lisa Herndon, who also is that school’s athletic di- rector. “(The Stewart JV team) didn’t play as good against us this time and we played better. We were getting our serves in and we were defending well.”

Added Stewart coach Deb Stacy, that school’s former athletic director, “We played fl at. We made some early mistakes and never really recovered from that.”

Stacy was a bit more upbeat following her team’s win over Pasco in the varsity matchup.

The 14 students helped out on the obstacles alongside the Zephyrhills JROTC cadets, who are a mainstay of Mud Endeavor events. Both groups run the course in the fi nal heat.

“This is going to help us fi gure out what kind of team we’re going to have this year,” Rosier said.

The course also helped Vivien Bazelais complete

her rehabilitation from an illness that sidelined her for the last three years. She managed to train for a couple months to try and re-gain the form she had prior to the setback and found the obstacles easier than the endurance aspect of the race. course with her. Vivien actually met Claude at a road race in Palmetto three years ago.

“When you compete in high school, later in life, that kind of goes away,” Vivien Bazelais said. “I’m one that still needs that in their life and these events are an outlet for that.”

The Steel Toe 2019 group brought many to their fi rst obstacle course race. The group, con- sisting of Tampa International Airport employ- ees. Original members Taja Robinson and An- gel Chaparro ran their fi rst OCR in 2017 at Cas- tle Canyon. The duo had run other OCR and 5Ks under a diff erent team name but they man- aged to drag four more co-workers out to Satur- day’s event.

The team of the Woodruff Mudslingers out of Bradenton represented Woodruff & Sons Construction. For some of the team members, it was their fi rst OCR but others had competed in Mud Endeavor’s Little Manatee River Run and

Under the Lights.

“It’s a team-building exercise for the com- pany,” Denise Madsen said. “It encourages family participation as well. Mud Endeavor is a family-owned and operated business.”

In the 9 a.m. competitive wave, elite runner Stephen Wilk made it back-to-back Mud Endeavor victories after winning the Mud Endeavor X event, also in Brooksville.

Wilk’s new family was on hand to witness his uncontested win. Coming in second was another familiar face on the circuit, Bill Seaton and in third was a Mud Endeavor regular but surging way up to the front, Justin Murray.

Murray operates an immensely popular OCR/

road race calendar-type website called Mud Run Guide. Murray is a ubiquitous presence on the course with a go-pro and still camera but on Saturday, a new training regimen had him in the top tier.

“I’ve been training with Runfl uent Tampa doing intervals,” Murray said. “I also recently ran in a North American championship race in Vermont with big mountains. Those really helped me for this run today.”

Up next in the Mud Endeavor series is the Dec. 7 Muddy Santa Run, also in Brooksville.

had at least one catch. That group included Marc Dortch, Jaxson Rivera, Clayton Corneilli- us and Roundtree.

“We don’t target one guy,” Carroll said.

“Wherever the (defensive) holes are we’re go- ing to take what they give us.”

On Sunlake’s second possession of the third quarter, quarterback Kevin Spillane evad- ed the pass rush and scrambled to his left, fi nd- ing Maguire Neal on a crossing route for a 62- yard touchdown pass. Anderson scored earlier on a 74-yards kickoff return.

Sunlake mounted its longest drive of the game in the fourth quarter, marching 66 yards downfi eld on 16 plays and converting two fourth downs along the way.

Spillane, who fi nished with 107 passing yards and two interceptions to go along with

his touchdown, hooked up with tight end Da- vid Meyer for a 30-yard sideline pass on that drive capped off by Zach Spicer’s 8-yard run and subsequent two-point conversion run.

Spicer ran for a game-high 135 yards, top- ping 88 rushing yards by Zephyrhills’ Zyre Roundtree, who also had two scoring runs.

The Bulldogs also got a 42-yard intercep- tion return for a touchdown from Jaylin Thom- as. Thomas, however, was not the only defend- er who helped keep the Seahawks at bay. Gal- limore added an interception, inside linebacker Brian Ashmore had three sacks and Neal was in on a pair of sacks. Also adding a sack each were Chris Weeks, Jarrin Galyan and Roundtree.

Roundtree’s sack, which stopped Sunlake on a fourth-down play, led to a 24-yard fi eld goal by Rivera as time expired in the fi rst half.
