aRbaRito Parish Activities/Bulletin Editor kbarbarito@olangelscc.org bulletin@olangelscc.org Dear Parishioners

and Guests,

On August 26th we celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of C z e s t o c h o w a , or the Black Madonna of Poland. It is a very famous painting of the Blessed Virgin holding the Child Jesus. Under this title, Mary is the Patron and Protector of Poland. Since the face of Mary is very dark, she is referred to as the Black Madonna. The picture follows the traditional form of an icon.

Mary gestures toward Jesus, directing the attention away from her and pointing to Jesus as the source of salvation. The child Jesus extends his right hand in blessing to the viewer of the painting and holds a book of the gospels in his left hand.

As in many icons Jesus looks like a small man, reminding us that Jesus, while still a child, is fully mature in his Divine nature.

The painting of the Madonna has a long history. Legend has it that it was painted by Saint Luke on a piece of a tabletop built by Saint Joseph. Some even say it is part of the table used at the Last Supper. Saint Helen found this painting when she went to Jerusalem in search of the true cross. She gave the painting to her son, Constantine. When the city of Constantinople was invaded by the Saracens, the people prayed to Mary and the city was saved. This began the great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary attached to this painting.

The history of the painting is more accurately documented in 1382, when Prince Ladislaus was owner of the painting. In that year, when the Tartars were invading the Prince’s palace, an arrow hit the painting. Prince Ladislaus decided to move the

icon, in order to keep the picture safe. On the journey, he stopped and spent the night at Czestochowa. The next day, as they began to continue the journey, the horses pulling the wagon with the painting of Our Lady refused to move. Prince Ladislaus took this as a sign that the painting was to remain in Czestochowa. The icon was placed in the care of the Order of the Hermits of Saint Paul at their monastery called the Bright Mount, or in Polish, Jasna Gora.

The icon of the Black Madonna, Our Lady of Czestochowa, is there to this day.

The icon was again in danger and damaged in 1430 when the Hussites invaded the monastery.

Twice the painting was struck with a sword, and before it could be hit the third time, the looter fell to the ground and died. Despite trying to repair the painting, the sword cuts and the arrow wound are still visible in the painting today.

There is even a modern story from the time Russia invaded Poland in 1920. The overwhelming Russian army was attacking Warsaw when an image of Mary was seen in the clouds. At this vision, the Polish troops were able to initiate a counteroffensive and Poland was again saved.

Our Lady of Czestochowa pray for us!

Announcement for families with students in Catholic School:

In order to qualify for the Catholic Family School tuition rate and completion of the Parish Affiliation Form, weekly offertory envelopes usage is required on a regular basis .

It is important to understand an offering does not need to be included with the usage of the weekly envelopes.

This is the only feasible way to confirm your family is active in the church and meets the definition of an “active Catholic family.”

If at the time of needing the Parish Affiliation Form to be

completed, you do not meet the definition, we are happy to do so when your attendance at weekly Mass has met the definition.

We applaud your decision to educate your children in our Faith.

God Bless,

Your Parish Finance Council of Our Lady of the Angels

Please call the church office at least six months in advance to schedule your wedding. We recommend that you not schedule your reception venue until you have secured a date & time for the wedding ceremony.

Baptisms are scheduled on Saturdays at 3PM and Sundays at 12:30PM.

Parents must attend one mandatory Baptism preparation class which are held on the first Monday of the month at 7PM. Visit our website to submit a Baptism registration form at olangelscc.org or contact the parish office. Godparents must be registered, active members of a parish.

We are also pleased to announce that the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be offered on Fridays at 3 pm, the Holy Hour, as requested by Our Lord to St. Faustina. The Divine Mercy Team will lead the Chaplet at the top of the hour, leaving the remaining time for quiet prayer. This is a special time for grace and mercy.

Our Lord asked “Can you not spend one hour with me?” Sometimes our daily lives get so busy, even an hour is a lot! That’s OK, just 10 minutes of time in prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament can make a difference in our lives. You are welcome any time that the doors are open, for as long as you feel the need to pray.

Instructions on the use of the Shades are in the Chapel, and we only ask you to please Sign-in.

We are often asked ‘how can I pray for one full hour?’ Prayer can take many forms. Prayer can be formal or informal; praying a Rosary, Chaplet or Novena; having a personal conversation with Our Lord; or reading the Bible or a book to help us learn more about our Faith and Our Lord, His Mother Mary, St. Joseph, the Saints and Angels, Heaven, etc. It is the effort of reaching out to Our Lord that reaps benefits in the many ways He reaches back to us.

If one hour a week with Our Lord is something that you would like to do, we encourage you to sign up as a weekly Adorer by contacting Nancy at Adoration@olangelscc.org. We are also welcoming new members to the Adoration Ministry Team - the Team who works ‘behind the scenes’ to maintain the prayerful

atmosphere of the Adoration Chapel. Interested! Contact us at Adoration@olangelscc.org. Thank you.

- The Adoration Ministry Team

A Mass was held with a special blessing for those ladies that have chosen to wear a veil. We have given out 150 veils since Lent 2019. Some women have come up to me and told me to take it off because I was putting women back to pre - 60’s. I was only doing this for 6 weeks but I started to read about veiling and became interested in this practice. Someone said “You think you are better

than everyone else!”

I did answer that I am a sinner and feel very small and humble in our Lord’s house.

Veiling is not for everyone, but it just might be something you would like to try. Please talk to any of my sisters who veil. Notice in the

picture we have young women, middle age and grandmothers. All are welcome.

Wednesday lunch with Jesus

Most of us have lost our golfing buddies or ladies luncheons due to our friends going back up north. Some of us just do not have anything to do on Wednesday at noon. Consider some quiet time with Jesus. Once you experience this time in the chapel you will be hooked.

Fr. Sebastian and Fr. Shawn bring the Blessed Sacrament to you at your seats. I can not express all the feelings I have each week. I cry every time I get to kneel in front of our Lord.

You feel him touch your soul and fill you with his love. Once you have joined us, you will return again and again. It takes just a few minutes from your day but it is priceless.

OLA has adoration in the daily chapel every Wednesday from 8:30am - noon.

Many blessings and hugs, Maestro Gia
