(9) INTRODUCTORY In continuing our study of frater na l racketeering and spurious Rosicrucian O r d e rs in America and in reviewing the fraudulent schemes, the devices of fraud and the artificcs of swindlers con nected therewith, we find th at the simple confidence tricks of other days have given way to new brands and kinds of fraud. T h o s e who sold green goods, gold bricks and fake lightning rods to our g r a n d f a th e r s would stand aghast and du mfounded at the elaborate fraudulent schemes of present-day swindlers. As our civilization has become more complex, so, also, crimes in general have become more complicated in design and more cunning in execution. F o r th at reason, many of them are much more difficult to detect and to successfully prosecute. T h e r e fore, some of them, perh ap s the worst of them, continue in o p e ra tion for long periods of time and claim countless victims without serious molestation. T h i s is particularly true of offenses and crimes, the grav am en of which is deceit, false pretense or fraud. T h o s e who conceive a fraud ulen t scheme in these times invariably plan to come near enough to the truth, at least in appearance, to escape prosecution for misrepresentation and false pretense. T h e y go to grea t lengths to create closely controlled corporations to cover their schemes with legal pa ra phe rn alia and to give to them the appearance of having the official sanction of the officers o f the law who g r ant ed their cha rters ; they outwardly simulate scrupulously and faithfully reputable and successful institutions to give to their schemes the plausible appearances of genuineness, and for the purpose of f r a ternal racketeering they select societies, or de rs and fraternities of high repute th at are mystical, occult or secret in their nature and about which the gr ea te r number of people are ill advised and know but little, so th at their schemes may be hidden in general ignorance and easy of operation because of the lack of knowledge of the many victims whom they would exploit. H o w e v e r , if they have never been members of the secret or der.

(10) which they attempt to imitate and in whose names they c a rry on their fraudulent schemes, they are uninformed on essential facts and ignorant as to the basic nature thereof. Ther efo re, in th at ignorance and as the result of their mistakes, too much p r o p a ganda and over-promotion, they invariably and eventually expose themselves, as in the present case of H . Spencer Lewis and his fraudulent R. C. Order. Whe n exposed they resort to bold chicanery and d a n g e ro u s ex pediencies to hide their fraud, such as those used in W h i l e B o o k I), issued by M r . Lewis in defense of his fraudulent scheme and con sidered at length in this book. W h e n caught they always flatter themselves that they can explain the whole m a t t e r to the entire satisfaction of official investigators anti post office inspectors o r to the prosecuting attorney. If indicted, they rely upon the p r e s u m p tion of innocence, hope to becloud the issues to create a d ou bt as to their guilt and believe th a t in any event they can convince the jury that they are victims of partisan persecution inspired by jealous rivals or of erroneous judgment and unf ortun ate circumstances. Those who commit crimes of violence or who steal anti rob o u t right are usually taciturn; they hide their evil tleeds anti are noncommunicative, whereas pr om ot ers and p e r p e t ra t o rs of confidence games and fraudulent schemes are blessed with the “ gift of g a b ” ; they will talk glibly about their affairs, and with plausible exp lan a tions or cunning subterfuges they will readily un de rta ke to dissipate all doubts as to the propriety of their shady business or as to the genuineness of their fabricated and spurious institutions. W i t h them the explanation sufficient for the moment is expedient. T h e r e fore, on different occasions they give different explanations, tell changing stories, make contradictory statements and suspicious claims, which upon investigation are found to be a lto g e th e r false, and in this wise do they furnish the p ro o f for their own conviction. A ppro pr iat e to the foregoing observations, the casual r e a d e r will find the contents of this book most interesting; the student of unique frauds and strange rackets will find it w o r t h y o f close study, and the official investigator will find it useful. Th e re should be some precincts too sacred fo r fraud to enter and some things too high and holy to be exploited. T h e r e are the religious instincts, the higher aspirations and the spiritual hopes of mankind. T h e noble impulses o f brotherly love, the expansion A.

(11) oi fraternalism among men, the development of higher states of consciousness and the evolution of the spirit or soul growth should be above and beyond the scheming devices and dirty hands of crooks and villains. But— alas, it is not the case! Some of the worst lra uds — some of the most accursed swindles— have been com mitted in the name of religion, and the most nefarious exploitation of the good, the trustful and the innocent has been accomplished under the guise of brotherly love, mysticism, occultism or fraternalism. Unf ortunately, there are many of such cases. Ho w ev er, we shall make brief mention of only three in connection with the instant case under consideration. J o h n I" air Ne w began his eventful career in N e w Y o r k City about the year 1909. H e represented th at he was of divine origin, a son of the Ho l y Gh o st — grea ter in authority, majesty and power than was Moses, Llijah or John the Baptist— that the mantle of the “ M a n of Galilee” had fallen upon him and t hat he had received the “ keys to the kingdom of heaven.” H e claimed to be a W o r l d M a s t e r and the founder of the “ N e w ” religion. In furtherance of his scheme he organized a mothe r church and subordinate churches; he made himself an archbishop and made bishops, preachers and dignitaries of various ranks out of his best-paying or most trusted victims; he incorporated universities and seminaries to teach his doctrines and the “ N e w ” theology and sold scholarships, and in corporated publishing companies and sold books. But he failed to comply with the laws of California in the organization of some of his corporations. In 1917 he was arrested at his San IHrancisco he a dq uar ter s and convicted in the f e d e r a l Court for using the United States mails for fraudulent purposes. T h e conviction was affirmed by the United States Circuit Co ur t of Appeals.' H e made many false representations, but the grossest ol them all was that he could transmit his alleged divine powers and infinite wisdom to others who paid the price or made donations sufficiently large to fully demonstrate that they were deeply interested m the wor k and welfare of the “ N e w ” religion. _ A r t h u r Crane was another “ inspired” crook H e claimed th at he was possessed of divine inspiration and had the C h r i s t J ™ e r H e pretended to cure all manner of diseases by the absent ticati See Vol ume 245 of the Federal Reporter, pa ge 710..

(12) ment; that all the victim need do was to write to “ D r .' Crane, appoint the hour when he or she would be rea dy fo r t r e a t m e n t and to “leave the rest to A r t h u r C r a n e . ” “ D r . ” Crane wrote many books which he claimed answe red all questions th at troubled the doubting souls o r perplexed minds o f men and women. In those books which he sold to his victims he solved or pretended to solve all hum an pr oblems and to free m a n kind from all the ailments of the flesh and all the woes of the spirit to which mankind is subjected on this old e a rt h anil in this vale of tears. In 1919 he was a rr e s te d in Ca lifornia, tried and convicted of the fraudulent use of the mails. T h e conviction was affirmed by the Unit ed States Circuit C o u r t of Appeals." T h e jury in each case could readily see t h a t their schemes were fraudulent and th at these self-styled m o d e r n p r o p h e t s and “ in spired” saviors were plain, unvarnished crooks and p r o m p t ly con victed. T h e Circuit Court of Appe al s m a d e e la bo r at e and careful reviews of their cases and held, n o t w ith s ta nd in g the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom, th a t thei r schemes were elab or ate devices of fraud and th at they had used the U n i t e d States mail as a means of obtaining money under false pretense in pursuance of grossly fraudulent schemes devised by them for t h a t purpose. In 1922 M a t t h e w McBain T h o m s o n was convicted in the U n it ed States District Court at Salt La ke City, U t a h , as the p e r p e t r a t o r of one of the most unique and ingenious mail and M a s o n i c fra u d s as ever was devised and pe rp e t ra t e d by any o f the mo st d a ri n g and spectacular Masonic impostors in history.3 W e hav e given special consideration to this case in P a r t On e of C h a p t e r IV herein and elsewhere throu gh ou t this book. T h e n came H a r v e Spencer Lewis, the successor o f T h o m s o n in fraternal f rau d and racketeering, who fo r the past twenty years has been operating and so continues to o p e ra t e a spurious hybrid Masonic-Rosicrucian scheme, fraudulently p r o m o t e d with g r e a t e r elaboration and carried on with unique artifices and devices f ar more extensive, complex and baffling than his noto rious predecessor - See Volume 259 of the F ederal R eporte r, p a g e 480. (13) in Masonic fraud. T h e Lewis scheme, now operated strictly as a private affair and as his family enterprise, is dealt with in consid erable detail in this and the preceding volume. This book, as originally planned, was to be a brief answer to Lewis’ JVliile ( ? ) B o o k 1). It was not intended to exceed two h undred pages, with references only to the sources of authority and the p r o o f of our statements. Ho w ev er, as we studied this ■crooked little book of grea t deception, of many stratagems and artifices and of much bombastic ballyhoo, issued in defense of a complicated fraudulent scheme and a nefarious swindle, it became more and more appa ren t that, to completely and satisfactorily uiswer the same, it would be necessary to thoroughly expose the fraudulent scheme and to point out in detail the many and varied artifices and devices used in its promotion, to show the cunning skullduggery and plausible chicanery employed in its operation and to demonstrate the hocus-pocus stratagems, the clap-trap subter fuges, the wanton trickery and diabolical methods used for its ■defense. I herefore, it was determined, even at the cost of much delay and the undue expansion of this book, to conclusively establish all these ma tte rs and the facts of this case with competent evidence in the nature of f a c s i m i le reproductions of unmutilated and un deleted documentary p r o o f ; with the f a c s i m i le reproduction of the m an uf act ur ed evidence, mutilated and deleted documents and spu rious and misrepresented charters and wa r ra n ts of alleged Rosicru cian authority employed by him to promote, perpetuate and defend liis fraudulent scheme, all of which are shown to be snares and delusions and p ro of certain th at it is an indefensible swindle; and to establish the basic fraudulent nature of his scheme and its nefa rious operation with verbatim, quotations of published statements of his contradictory pretensions and groundless claims. All of which has been conclusively established by p r o o f which M r . Lewis, with all his cunning plausibility and expert dodging, cannot suc cessfully question or dispute. Now, since the m aj o r portion of the p r o o f of the fraudulent nature and operation of this scheme has been supplied by the de signer and p r o m o t e r of the swindle, much space has been used in the quotation and analysis of his claims and assertions made in ■court under oath or solemnly published to the world..

(14) Th er efo re, the interested reader, the sincere investigator and the earnest seeker for tru th — the whole truth and all the actual facts— will appreciate our position and the strength of the case we have made, because we have made no charges and have m ade no asser tions of fact without backing them up with the p r o o f th ereof, as shown by documents and printed material. M o r e o v e r , while we have set forth the documents in f a c s i m i le and the printed m a t t e r in verbatim quotation, with our comments and suggestions as an aid to the reader and investigator— yet particular attention is directed to the fact th at we have supplied the p r o o f of the facts so as to en able them to reach their own independent conclusions. Although much evidence— indeed, sufficient p r o o f — is set forth herein to establish conclusively th at the A M O R C , as conceived and operated by H . Spencer Lewis and his son Ralph, is a fraud ulen t scheme and a swindle extraordinary, yet only a small p a r t of the evidence th ereof available to prove it to be such has been p r o duced; only a few of the voluminous, contradictory claims and tell tale statements of the Lewises have been quoted; only p a r t of their tricks, subterfuges, stratagems, artifices and devices o f fr a u d have been exposed; only the surface of their cunning m et ho ds and despicable practices has been uncovered, and only a few of the infinite number of their plausible falsehoods and utterly false p r e tensions have been run down; whereas, all of them can be shown to be untrue and absolutely fraudulent in intent and in fact; yet, n ev er theless, this work is an excellent brief of the facts which will prove most useful to independent and official investigators in securing all of the evidence of this despicable fraud, and it will point the way to secure and indicate the methods to be followed in obtaining overwhelming corroborative p r o o f of the detestable na tu re and foul details of this deplorable and nefarious swindle. W e trust th at our readers will carefully consider the personal foreword and review the preamble, which is intended to advise as to the general contents of the volume. Par ticula r attention is directed to C ha p t e r I, in which the con spiracy bugaboo is shown to be an ov erworked s tr a ta g e m to hide and obscure an insidious fraudulent scheme. T h e m an ne r in which the courts in California have been imposed upon and their findings and decrees have been used to justify and f ur th e r pr o m o t e a swin dle is also shown with astounding verity. T o get the full impo rt of.

(15) the astounding manner in which the instruments of justice and the institutions of law have been abused and used to give prhva f a n e sanction to a fraud, the concluding portion of C ha pt er V I I should be read in connection with the subject m at te r of the first chapter. The various false issues, smoke-screen subterfuges, petty chi canery, personal attacks and trumped-up counter-charges receive attention in Chapters II and III. In these chapters the indefensible and reprehensible methods employed to defend and perpetuate this fiaudulent scheme have been just arraigned. How ev er, the seveiity of the arr aignment and the deserved condemnation of such despicable trickery and base practices may cause the reader at •ii st to feel a sympathy lo r a bold and unscrupulous fraternal tacketeei th at is not at all deserved. T he ref or e, may we suggest that the reade r reserve judgment on these matters or, better yet, reserve the reading of these chapters until all others have been completed, whereupon it will be obvious that not one-half has been said in seveie condemnation as should have been said and th at the a ria ig nm en t is mild in comparison with acts and deeds which can not be too severely condemned. T h e diabolical scheme, as it was originally conceived and put into execution and the mann er in which it has been continuously carried on as a frat ernal racket and swindle since the year 1920, and off and on between the years 1915 to 1920, is stripped of all its camouflage and shown in its naked ugliness in Ch apters IV, V and VI. The supplemental review of the stupid, false, improbable and impossible claims of Rosicrucian authority and of the irrecon cilable, conflicting and contradictory statements concerning those claims and the authenticity of the spurious R. C. O r d e r founded upon them, as set forth in C ha pt e r V, shows beyond question and doubt th at the scheme was conceived in fraud and th at it has been opera ted as a swindle from the beginning. M or e ov e r , that which is most impressing and convincing, as above pointed out, is th at he who conceived the fra ud and operated the swindle has furnished conclusive evidence to establish the charge verily, verily, out of his own mou th— by the issues of his own pen, and fro m his own published statements comes the un deniable pr oo f thereof. N o doubt, M a so n s and the Masonic Fr a te rn ity will be deeply interested in learning of the dubious and cunning ways in which the.

(16) good report of M asons and the high standing and g oo d name o f their fraternity have been used to p ro mo te a f r a t e r n a l swindle. Certainly, all Masons will keenly resent and emphatically condemn the misuse and abuse of Masonry, even though it is principally the misuse and abuse of Masonic O r de rs which they m ay r e g a r d as clandestine, because in the public eye the M aso ni c F r a t e r n i t y enjoys a high standing. T h e average person knows and makes no dis tinction between the regular and the clandestine M a s o n r y , and the public at large is generally willing to accept anything or any plan as being good, wholesome and wor thy if it ap p e ar s to have M a sonic sanction or approval. T h e r e f o r e , the misuse and abuse o f the name of M a so nr y in connection with any crooked scheme or questionable affair not only works a fraud upon the public, but it is injurious to all M asons and highly de trimental to their f r a t e r nity. T h e manner in which the pr om ot e r of this fra ud ul en t scheme and fraternal swindle has used M a so ns and M aso ni c symbols and has abused and misused M a s o n r y and the way in which falsified, deleted and mutilated Masonic papers and documents have been used to fu rther his ends and to serve his purposes is shown t h r o u g h out this volume, particularly in P a r t s One, T w o and Five of C h a p ter IV and in Chap ter V. T h e pr om ot e r of this spurious Rosicru cian O r d e r and fraternal swindle even went so f a r as to have a court find that he had not been denied membership in the M a so n i c Fra ter nit y when, in fact, such membership had been so denied. So much so has he used M asons and M a s o n r y to p r o m o t e and carry on this fraudulent Rosicrucian O r d e r th a t the scheme is aptly and correctly designated and is, in fact, a Masonic-Rosicrucian swindle. Wit h high-pressure salesmanship, with nation-wide, bombastic advertising, with everflowing and highly gasified p r o p a g a n d a and much ballyhoo and with tons of pro motio na l literature, all o f which is contrary to the practices and ideals of M a s o n r y and Rosicrucianism, this scheme has been used as a contrivance to build a million-dollar fraternal racketeering concern. T h e royal revenues of this hierarchal racket are derived from initiation fees, mon thly dues, the sale of mystical bunk in books, so-called occult and scien tific lore in special courses or lectures, specially priced, and a full line of fra ternal merchandise, but the most productive o f these are mystical bunk and fraternal merchandise. C h a p t e r V I deals with this unique merchandising m a r t conducted in the name of.

(17) brothe rly love and for the alleged advancement of the race. In this same chapter are revealed the cunning designs and artful trickery t hat were used for the conversion of this fraudulent scheme and hierarchal commercial marketing concern into a family racket by incorporating it as a membership and family corporation with out profit to anyone save his family and as a subterfuge to avoid the payment of taxes. In some of the books in Volume I and in the first few7 chapters of this book in Volume 11 we spoke of this scheme as being a clever device of fraud and of its designer and pr om o t e r as being a clever artist in the swindling arts and a clever frater na l racketeer. HowTcver, since we have reviewed, carefully studied and analyzed M r . Lewis’ ignorant conception of a Rosicrucian O r d e r ; the curious o r ganization th at he fabricated and set up pursuant ther eto ; the foolish and nonsensical things t hat he did to promo te it; the strange “ documents,” unique “ c ha rte rs ” and “w a r r a n t s ” of alleged au thority th at he faked and procured or designed and manufactured, under which he has p u rp o rte d to w o r k ; the so-called universal, world and international non-existent councils and faked interna tional congresses and conventions used as devices to furnish him with alleged authority, recognition and certificates of authenticity; the false, ridiculous and impossible claims to Rosicrucian initiation and authority and Masonic recognition, approval, titles and honors th at he has asserted; the infinite number of contradictory state ments he has made and the many changing, repugnant and con flicting stories he has told concerning his alleged authority and relating to his fraudulent scheme and swindling devices; and last, but not least in base villainy, the wanton methods, the despicable chicanery, the m anu factured evidence and deleted and mutilatec “ p r o o f ” that have been used in defense of this exposed swindle— indeed, we must say, afte r having considered all these matters that we have made a grievous e rr o r and used the wron g word, anc th at there is nothing clever about the scheme, its promotion o: operation. It was conceived in gross ignorance of Rosicrucian affairs. It i a p o o r imitation of an R. C. Or de r, cunningly misrepresented, art fully promoted, willfully operated, deliberately pe rpet uated in opei defiance of the law and wantonly defended by the vilest method and with the most unthinkable and detestable tactics..

(18) Th er efo re, we respectfully submit for candid consideration t h a t no thoughtful person can contemplate the use and publication of falsified evidence, d e l e t e d papers and m u t i l a t e d documents or false testimony in court. N o careful person can examine the socalled “ important Rosicrucian documents,” the self-made and spu rious “ charters” falsely represented to be wa r ra n ts of Rosicrucian authority. N o discriminating person can consider the false, f a b u lous and conflicting tales concerning international, world and uni versal councils, congresses and conventions. N o casual or careless person can read the many different false and contradictory claims of Rosicrucian authority. N o one can witness the way in which the complete control and use of the concern has been reserved to the family. N o one can review the gross misrepresentations, the end less chicanery, the unscrupulous trickery and the numerous devices and aitifices of fiaud used to promote the scheme. In short, no one can read this work of two volumes without having the abiding feeling and firm conviction— indeed, without reaching the irresisti ble conclusion— that the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Cruets— the A M O R C — is a spurious Rosicrucian O r d e r ; th a t it is a f r a u d u lent scheme and that it is a nefarious fraternal swindle, op e ra t e d as a family racket. Now, inasmuch as this scheme, called the A M O R C is a gross f rau d the quest.on naturally arises: W h y has it b e e n ’allowed to exist for a score or more of years in open violation of the law, to wax strong and grow into a million-dollar swindle? T h e answer is simple and apparent. Only high Rosicrucian initiates know all the facts and the whole truth about the Order. Ev e n its neophytes, its general student bodies and those in the i ■ i t. ? . . . , . ,. sc.‘n cne l° w e r grades who have not been m.tiated mto a 1 ,ts myster.es and have not become Uosicruc.ans are no, fully adv.sed on all matters concerning the Fr a te r n it y , its true and lcai real hUt-m-., r i non , nature, its full status . nistoiy. t1i herefore, the members tile public m g e n e r a l - a r e wholly un informed, , c t many have heard of the Ros,crucians. (19) ■secret of their membership, but wear badges and insignia to p r o claim such membership; whereas, Rosicrucians seldom make known their connection with or membership in the Rosicrucian Fraternity. Yet, with M a so n r y generally known, T h o m s o n carried on his no torious fraud in the name of M a so n ry for twenty years before he was finally exposed and convicted. T h e r ef o r e, with the Rosicru cian O r d e r less known, it has been less difficult, and Lewis could more readily carry this fraud in the name of the Rosicrucians and promote with alleged foreign Masonic “ ho nor s” and feigned M a sonic approval. This swindle has existed because of lack of pr op er information -and general knowledge and because the officers of the law could not see wherein the fraud lies. It mystified them; yet, perceiving that it was and is a crooked and suspicious scheme covered with badges ■of fraud, nevertheless, they did not know how or where to procure the evidence to prove the fraud th at has been almost a p pa ren t— if not ap pa ren t— to them. It has existed because no one who really knew wherein the fraud lay has definitely pointed it out or clearly defined it; because no one has taken the pains to run down the many fraudulent representa tions and false pretense used to pro mote and to sustain it, and be cause no one has taken the trouble or gone to the heavy expense to collect the evidence of the same— which exists in grea t abundance — and to thoroughly expose it. Knowing the tru th concerning the Rosicrucians and the facts relating to the O r d e r of the Rosy Cross and the Rosicrucian Br ot herhood, we have assumed th at burden, and herein we thoroughly expose this fraudulent scheme and family racket and point to the pro of of this abominable swindle in this, ■our answer to L e w i s ’ W h i l e B o o k “I ) . ”.

(21) PERSONAL FOREWORD T h e second volume of The Rosicrucian Fraternity in America is a complete answer to a calumnious, unscrupulous and misleading booklet, recently issued by M r . H . Spencer Lewis, the pseudoRosicrucian, clandestine M a so n and mystic swindler, of San Jose, California, under the impressive title of W h i t e Book I), which if intended to be descriptive or indicative of its contents should have been entitled: B l a c k B o o k , o f D e c e p t i o n . For several years I have been publishing warnings to all persons interested, seriously or otherwise, in the August Fraternity or the Order o f the Rose Cross against the false claims of the aforesaid pseudo-Rosicrucian, who fabricated and launched a spurious Rosicrucian organization in New York in 1915, with meager success, culminating in failure and collapse in 1918 afte r a raid of the New York police on his then National headquarters and his arrest after which he retired into “ silence” and nothing was hea rd of his spurious fabrication until 1920, when he appeared in San F r a n cisco, where, with the financial assistance of William Reisner. a sincere seeker afte r occult truths and a successful business man and with the aid of the Rev. George R. Chambers, an Episcopalian minister and high M ason, who rewrote most of his lectures up to the sixth grade, he succeeded in reorganizing his so-called R. C Orde r. How ever, his success was not marked, and in 1925 he associated himself with M r . Ralph A. W a ck e r m a n of T a m p a , Florida, to which place he moved his headquarters. Durino- the two years he remained in Florida, he greatly increased the mem bership of his enterprise by a high-pressure nation-wide p r o p a ganda campaign.1 As the result of a disagreement with his Florida sponsor, he moved his headquarters to San Jose, California. In 1928 he converted his spurious R. C. O r d e r and fraudulent ente r prise into a family racket and fraudulently in corporated2 it as a 1 See Int r oduct i on to Book T h r e e , Vol ume I, pp. 134 to 139, f or ;i gener al descri, ition of his activities. 2 See Ch a p t e r VI hereof, wher e the f r a u d u l e n t i ncor por at i on of his f a mi l y racket is fully treated..

(22) college, with himself and members of his family as the H i e r a r c h y of his exclusive mystic swindle. It was not until after 1928 that this fraudulent R. C. O r d e r and fraternal racket took on the serious proportions of a national menace. Since that time, as Supreme G r a n d M a s t e r , outer head and spokesman of the authentic Rosicrucian Fr a te r n it y in America, I have published several magazine articles, booklets and pamp hle ts denouncing the methods of this pseudo-Rosicrucian and his spurious and fraudulent enterprise carried on under the sacred symbol and holy name of the Rosy Cross. Last year I issued four booklets3 th at had wide circulation, deal ing with this subject, republished as Books T w o , T h r e e , P o u r and Five in Volume I hereof, to which M r . Lewis att e m p te d to reply in his so-called W h i t e Book 1), and although it p u r p o rt s to be a reply thereto it is a miserable subterfuge in lieu of a reply, as will clearly appear as the reader proceeds with this volume. No one realizes or knows so well as M r . Lewis t h a t his so-called R. C. O r d e r is spurious and fraudulent; th at his fr a te r n a l family racket is a gigantic swindle, and th at his so-called W h i t e Bo o k I) is a pure subterfuge, a book of cunning and deception and is not, in tru th — even to the slightest degree-—an answer to our charges or to similar charges made by many of his fo rm er members, all of whom he has attacked personally and impugned their motives in one way or another, as also appears in W h i t e Bo o k 1). H e has from time to time, in various ways, attacked me p e r sonally, because he realized and knew full well t h a t he could not in truth or in fact meet the charge of the spurious and fraudulent nature of his fabricated R. C. O r d e r which he has converted into a huge racket and swindle. H ow e ve r , inasmuch as he was unable to meet the truth and the facts as set forth in our recent booklets and realizing that he had failed utterly to answer the same in his booklet of subterfuge and deception, he has, during the past few months, made the most insidious, nefarious, outrageous and mali cious personal attacks on myself and family, thro ug h private cor respondence and by a well-organized whispering campaign of his so-called militia and scandalmongers, with the wicked purpose of destroying one who accuses him justly, th a t he may save himself 3 M y purpose and motive in issuing those booklets is fully st ated in the F o r e w o r d to Book Four, Volume I, pp. 179 to 183, a nd need not be r est at ed here, but should be kept in mind..

(23) and his swindling fraternal racket. Such low tactics and degraded practices are tacit admissions of guilt, th at should speak eloquently and convincingly of his guilt to all upright and self-respecting men and women. Innocent men do not resort to such low and question able methods. I will not stoop to reply to those personal attacks. Even if they were true, he cannot justify his acts of fraud, his fra ternal racket and his mystic swindle by pointing the finger of scorn at me or my family. Sufficient to say, however, that my personal conduct, although not claimed to be exemplary or perfect, has been— never theless— upright and honorable. T h e r e has been no scandal con nected with my family or my private life. I am well reputed in the community in which I have lived all my life. In addition to my connection witli the Rose Cross, I belong to fraternal organi zations to which 1 would not have been admitted if this were not true anti from which I would have been promptly expelled if the slanderous charges were true as circulated by M r . Lewis and his cohorts. Although our files abound with material of a personal nature, relating to the private life and personal conduct of M r . Lewis, I have never made a personal attack upon him. I have only attacked his spurious and fraudulent fraternal enter prise, his methods in connection therewith and his unscrupulous tactics. I have never said anything unkind of the ladies of his family. I have said th at he is using his wife and daughter-in-law as dupes to furt he r his fraudulent scheme anti family racket by having them serve as trustees or directors of his Supreme G ra n d Lodge Cor poration and to do his bidding, which is true— abso lutely true, but in justification of those good women, I must say that T doubt if they have any knowledge of the iniquitous nature of his racket. T h e y have trusted him and he has misled them as he has thousands of others. 1 have said, and repeat here for emphasis in connection here with, that “we have no malice, we hold no personal grudge against him, notwithstanding his numerous vicious, unjustified personal attacks upon us. W e do not attack him personally even if our vigorous attacks upon him may seem to be personal. W e are fighting his shameful methods, his false pretenses and the infamous things for which he stands. W e are fighting f o r principle— f o r right— f o r justice and honorable dealings and fair play among men..

(24) W e ‘\ r e. n o t. f ig h tin g. m en, b u t t h e. e v il t i i a t. m e n. d o .” 4. Th er efo re, the public should not be misled or their attention diverted from his swindling enterprise by the personal attacks he is underhandedly making upon me and others who question or accuse him. T h e r e is an outstanding device, constantly resorted to by M r . Lewis, to prevent, and with many it does prevent, a fair and i m p a r tial consideration of the charges which I have made against him, to which particular attention is directed. It is this: H e claims that these charges should not be seriously considered and cannot be true because, he says, they are made by a rival who is jealous of his success. Now, the truth is the truth, it m at ter s not by w h o m it is declared. Le t no one be misled by such a subterfuge, intended to prejudice the mind and to prevent a fair and serious considera tion of the charges upon their merits. In no p r o p e r sense can there be rivalry between the real Rose Cross and a spurious R. C. enterprise such as he is operating. Certainly the authentic O r d e r can never regard itself as the rival of a spurious imitation, w r o n g fully using its name and usurping its pr erogatives— and, most surely, no honest man is envious and jealous of the success achieved by chicanery and fraud. H on e s t M e n are moved to express their disdain and condemnation of such because of their intuitive sense of right, honesty and justice/’ T h e r e are two other matters of a similar natur e to which I desire to direct the particular attention of Librarians and Rad io Program Managers. T h e Authentic Rosicrucian O r d e r in America has never sought publicity or free advertisement, n o r a tt e m p t e d to have publishers of reference books, dictionaries and encyclope dias publish any facts or the truth about the real Rosicrucians or their activities. On the other hand, M r . Lewis, the pr etender, the charlatan, the fabricator, pr o m o te r and p r o p rie to r of a spurious Rosicrucian Order, has been busy in furnishing editors and pub lishers of such publications false information, and by his cunning methods and plausible misrepresentations has succeeded in mis leading the editors and publishers of the following highly r e g a r d e d 4 Volume I, p. 183. ‘ I ask and expect no one to blindly accept my st atement s as be i n g t rue. H o w e v e r , in justice to t hemselves all interested parti es should give f a i r c onsi der a t i on to the proof of the c har ges as present ed in this wor k a n d ma k e t hei r o w n i n d e p e n d e n t investigations wi t h an open mind..

(25) publications and has induced them to make favorable mention of or to give their recognition to and approval of his swindling and fraudulent device, namely: Ne w St andard Y ea r Book— 1934. H e has also attempted to mislead other editors and publishers of similar publications, but without success. Now, let us note how he is using the publications of the editors whom he has succeeded in misleading. On M a r c h 11, 1936, he f o rw ar d e d a circular letter, on the letterhead of his spurious R. C. Or de r, over the signature of his son as “ Secretary,” to the Chief Li b rar ian of all the public libraries in this country, containing the following s t a t e m e n t s : “ Respected Li b ra r ia n : “T h e Rosicrucian Orde r, known t hro ug ho ut the world as A M O R C , is a well-established and definitely o r ga n ized movement and has an enviable reputation. Aside from what it may say about itself, the following un biased, unprejudiced sources of information ref er to it favorably.” H e r e is listed the publications above mentioned. continues as follows:. T h e letter. “ W e understand, however, th at an individual named.

(26) R. Swinburne Clymer of Pennsylvania, who o pe rat es a small organization from his farm, has circulated a b o o k let which is being distributed among the leading public libraries of this country and Canada, de fam ing this o r ganization and its officers, the object being to have the libraries remove our official publication known as ‘T h e Rosicrucian Dig es t’ and our books.” H e was fearful th at we would place Volume I of this w o r k in the public libraries of the country and that the tru th concerning the Authentic O r d e r and his fraudulent enterprise might be g e n erally diffused. As a m at te r of fact, Volume I of this w o r k has not been offered to public, fraternal, Masonic or ot h e r libraries for the reason th at it was not complete. T h e completed w o r k in T w o Volumes will be presented, free of charge, to every public, fraternal and Masonic library in the land— however, not with the view of having removed th ere from “ T h e Rosicrucian D i g e s t ” and other Lewis publications— but to make these volumes accessible to all interested persons, so that the facts concerning the real Rosi crucian O r d e r and the spurious one in America may be known to all who desire to know the truth. T h e letter continues: “ W e realize that chief librarians and library officials are not interested in controversies, but they do manifest a spirit of fair play. Th e r ef o r e, we would appreciate it if, before acting on the libelous literature if it comes to your attention, you carefully read the enclosed booklet which reveals the calibre and character of the individual attacking this organization. You will note fro m a r e a d ing of the booklet that in the past he was severely rebuked and criticized for his conduct by the American Medical Association, and they also allege he was in volved in a fraudulent ‘diploma mill’ closed by the United States Post Office.” W it h this letter was enclosed fV hit e B o o k I ), which is completely answered in this volume. I have also fully answered his misuse of the article published in 1923 in the Journal o f the Am eri ca n M edical Association in a pamphlet entitled: “D r . R . Swinburne Clymer Replies to ‘D r . ’ I I . Spencer L e w i s , T h e M y s t i c Swindler.

(27) and the A . M . A . Article— Being an Expose of Elis At tem p ted M i s use of T h a t Article as a Shield of and in Perpetuation of H i s Own Insidious t r a u d . ” 0 T h e letter concludes thus: “ W e only ask th at we be given the opportunity to de fend ourselves against this slander and libel, if it comes to your attention.” It must occur, even to the casual reader and to the careless thinker, that if this publication is libelous, then the proper forum in which to try the issue of libel is a court of justice having juris diction of such matters and not a librarian or librarians. U p o n this particular question T shall have more to say. Clearly this is an attempt to forestall and prevent, if possible, the placing of this publication in the public libraries, upon the plea th at it is libelous and thus to delay, hinder and prevent the truth and the facts becoming generally known. Surely the public librarians in this land of liberty, where the freedom of the press is guaranteed, can not be so hoodwinked and will not be thus induced to exclude this work from the Public Libraries and assist in suppressing the truth. T h e other m att er refe rred to is a circular letter sent to all radio stations in the country, under date of M a r c h 26, 1936, on the letterhead of “ T h e Rosicrucian O r d e r ( A M O R C ) ” signed by his son as “ Secretary,” which is as follows: “ T o the P r o g r a m M a n a g e r : “ D e a r Sir: “ It has been called to our attention recently th at many radio stations th roughout the country are receiving in quiries as to who the Rosicrucians are, and wh at their activities are. Th is is due to the fact t h at there are many p ro gra m s on the air today dealing with philosophy, m et a physics, psychology, and kindred subjects, which mention the Rosicrucians. “T h e r ef o r e, we take this opportunity of sending you two enclosed brochures for reference. One is entitled ‘Some Facts About the Rosicrucians,’ which definitely sets forth what the organization is, and wh at it is not. T h e 0 T h i s pa mphl e t is avai l abl e to all who desire it..

(28) othei conveys a pictorial idea of the institution behind the organization. W e ask th at you kindly file same away foi 1eference under the heading of ‘Rosicrucian’ o r ‘Rosiciucianism. N a tu ra lly the Rosicrucians are not a reli gious Order, but a philosophical society. I f at any time we can provide you with f u r t h e r i n f o r mation about this O r d e r for the benefit of yo ur listeners, please do not hesitate in calling upon us. Attached is a list of recognized au th o ri tat iv e r e f e r ence sources of an unbiased nature which r e f e r to this world-wide organization. Its traditional origin dates back into antiquity.” Enclosed with said letter was the list of publications above refe iie d to and the pamphlets therein mentioned. T h i s is a fair sample of the clever, cunning, artful— yet insidious— m et ho ds e m ployed to prevent the dissemination of tru thful i n fo r m a t io n about the Rosicrucians and the Rose Cross O r d e r and to secure the broadcasting of false information in aid of his spurious Rosicrucian Or de r and fraternal swindle. Before publishing the facts contained in Volume I h e re o f I offeied to join M r . Lewis in a fair, dignified and secret he ari ng and complete investigation of our respective claims be fo re a com petent tribunal composed of high M a s o n s learned in f ra te r na l customs,^ landmarks and laws and offered to abide the results theieof. H e refused, to join in a fair, full and complete investi gation. This should be sufficient indication to all investigators and mteiested parties th at his false claims and spurious Rosicrucian Jrder cannot stand the test of an honest, p r o p e r and genuine in vestigation. I lie gist Hi the charges I have made and now m ake against ■ Spencer Lewis may be summarized as follows: t h a t he was not initiated into the O r d e r of the Rose Cross in Fr ance in 1909 and that he is not a Rosicrucian; that he received no rig htful Rosicru cian authoiity from the French or any French Rosicrucian O r d e r to institute the or der in this country in 1915, and even if an authentic Rosicrucian O r d e r had granted such a ut ho ri ty — which was not the case- he could not have rightfully exercised such autiioiity because the O r d e r existed in this country at t h a t time, p rio r ' See Book T h r e e , Volme I, pp. 156 to 170,.

(29) t hereto since 1858 and at all times since; th at he fabricated his so-called Rosicrucian O r d e r ; th at it is spurious and in no sense a real Rosicrucian organization; that he has falsely represented and continues to represent it to be a Rosicrucian O r d e r and the only real Rosicrucian Organization in America perpetuating the original or ganization and its teachings, thereby perpet rat ing a continuing fraud by which thousands have been de fra ud e d; that his various other claims of Rosicrucian authority from India, Egypt, Germany, De n mark, Switzerland and the W o r l d Council or the International R. C. Council are all false and have been used by him for fraudulent purposes and as swindling devices; that in 1928 he converted his spurious and fraudulent Rose Cross O r d e r into a Family Racket, since which time he has been wrongfully carrying on and conducting a fraternal racket, a fraudulent enterprise and a mystic swindle of nation-wide and gigantic proportions. T h u s I indict M r . Lewis, the pseudo-Rosicrucian and fraternal racketeer. I am pr ep a re d to prove this indictment and much more than here charged. I am aware th at these charges are libelous if untrue. Ther efo re, the most effective way for him to establish the falsity thereof is to bring a libel suit against me. I will not resort to any technical pleas, but will plead the truth in full justification thereof— thus will the issue be clear cut and a court of competent jurisdiction can then determine the truth or falsity of the charges th at I make.8 I fully appreciate the fact th at this question can not be finally settled by the publication of charges even with sustaining evidence on my part, and Lewis publishing his replies thereto, for two prin cipal reasons: First, ninety-eight percent of the public are unin formed upon the subject and are unable to determine the truth or the falsity of the charges. Second, M r . Lewis is unscrupulous. H e will make and publish any statement however false, if plausible, in reply thereto and will resort to any device or method however s I nasmuch as Mr . Lewi s knows that the char ge s I make ar e true, it is not at all likely t hat he will h a z a r d a suit on the clear-cut issue of the truth or falsity of my c har ge s as briefly outlined above. If this bold suggestion forces him to br i ng a suit a g ai ns t me it can be accurat ely predicted, based upon his u n d e r h a n d e d met hods and past pe r for mance, t hat he will seek e ver y u n f a i r a d v a n t a g e , do e ve r yt hi ng possible to p r e v e n t a f a i r and just decision on the merits, br i n g his suit upon i mma t e r i a l issues, becloud the issues by c u nni ng subterfuges, cr eate e ver y possible ambi gui ty and resort to all dilatory tactics known to the cleverest lawyer , so t hat he ma y make a g r a n d s t a n d play and thus save himself wi t hout f a ci ng the real issue. Such a suit as he will bring, if any, and if tried, will be decisive of no i mp o r t a nt or vital issue..

(30) unworthy and degrading to sustain himself and to p e rp e t u a t e his fraudulent enterprise, even to the extent of publishing falsified or manufactured evidence and mutilated or deleted documents, as he did in his W h i t e Bo ok D , as is fully de m on s tra te d in this answe r thereto. In publishing the facts about this e xt ra o rd in a ry f ra te r n a l racket and the unique methods of its cunning p r o m o t e r and pr op rie to r, the following objects have been foremost. ( a ) T o prote ct the good name of a holy and sacred institution, ( b ) So f ar as possible, to prevent sincere seekers of the Rosy Cross from being misled and defrauded, (c) T o cause and to assist students o f occultism and mysticism, as well as all interested parties, to make their own investigations, ( d ) T o arouse in mystic, occult and f ra te r n a l cir cles a righteous indignation against such racketeering in b ro th e rly love and fraternalism, and cause the many thousands interested in mystic societies, occult orders and the various fra ternities to make a public and insistent demand th at the gov ern m en t and g o v e r n mental agencies take necessary and p ro pe r action to protect the public against this notorious f rau d and ou trageous swindle, (e) And to emphatically and notably direct the attention of public offi cials, whose sworn and sacred duty it is to protect the citizens and inhabitants of this land against such frauds, to facts in the case, so that they may have no justifiable excuse fo r p e rm itt in g such a swindle to exist, continue and prosp er at the expense o f th ou san ds of victims— even though the wr o n g is cleverly and cunningly done under the disguise of fraternalism or brotherly love and co mmitt ed with an air of mysticism th at confuses, confounds and misleads high governmental officials as it has thousands of his victims. If M r . Lewis will accept my suggestion and bring a suit of libel against me without subterfuge, confusion or dilatory and u n f a i r tactics, in federal or state courts of Pennsylvania, on the clear-cut issue that I have charged th at his spurious Rosicrucian o r d e r is a fraud and a swindle, I will join the issue with him by pleading the truth of my charges and I will prove in court by competent and overwhelming evidence th at his so-called Rosicrucian family racket is a fraud and swindle of the most malignant and pernicious type. W it h the assistance of attorneys who are members of the authentic O r d e r in America who have volunteered their services and the au thentic Rosicrucian O rd ers of E u r o p e who have greatly assisted in collecting and securing the necessary evidence, I will make a judicial.

(31) record th at will leave no room for doubt in the minds of public officials that A M O R C , the family racket of H . Spencer Lewis, is a vicious fraud and nation-wide, inter-state swindle. W i t h such facts judicially established in a civil action, then surely the govern ment will promptly take the necessary and proper steps to put an end to this fraternal racketeering. Will M r . Lewis thus assist in the judicial determination of the truth of my charges? Publication of this volume has been delayed until every witness, here and abroad, could be located to prove every essential fact and until original rare documents, known to exist, could be secured from E ur op e and elsewhere, some of which are reproduced herein, notably: Orijlamme, Jubilee Issue, 1912. Gra teful acknowledgment is made of the valuable assistance thus rendered by Rosicrucian Gra nd M a st e rs of France and Euro pe with whom we maintain the most cordial relations. Assuming complete personal responsibility for every statement contained in this publication and vouching for the truth thereof, with this personal forew ord I present this completed work, in two volumes, for the consideration and information of all concerned. (33) PREAMBLE I V e H a v e H eard the Other Side In the so-called W h i t e Bo ok I ) we have Th e Other Side— the defense of his fraudulent Rosicrucian Orde r, of his racketeering in brotherly love and fraternalism— as simulated, fabricated and falsified by I I. Spencer Lewis. Herein it is weighed in the balances and found wanting-—-wholly wanting and devoid of truth or justi fication. Her ein we make an exhaustive analysis of W h i t e ( ? ) B oo k D and present herewith a complete answer thereto, insofar as it relates to us, to the authentic Rose Cross O r d e r or purports to be a reply to our charges, for the benefit of those who do not know the facts but who desire to know the truth and for those who have not the means of ascertaining the whole truth. In this answer W h i t e Bo o k I ) is stripped of all camouflage and is revealed to be a Black Bo o k o f Deception filled with the same character of plausible falsehoods, manufactured and falsified evidence, and de leted or mutilated documents-— typically Lewistonian— employed by him in the fabrication of his spurious R. C. O r d e r and in the organization of his fraternal racket. W it h the same wicked decep tion and the use of the same crafty methods and cunning devices he has been and is now carrying on and conducting one of the most unique and despicable frauds and mystic swindles of these times— indeed, of all times.. IF hat Is This “W h ite B o o k D ”f It pu rports to be M r . Lewis’ reply to several booklets,1 which have had wide circulation under popular demand, in which we exposed his fabricated and spurious Rosicrucian organization, his family racket, his fraudulent practices, his swindling arts, his Black Mag ic connections and in which we also pointed the W a y to the D o o r o f the authentic T e m p l e o f t i i e R o s y C r o s s . 1 R e p u b l i s h e d as Boo ks T w o , T h r e e , F o u r a n d F i v e in l ’o t u m e I.. 29.

(34) AN ANSW ER. TO L E W IS’ W H IT E. (?). BOOK. “ D ’*. H o w D oes H e R e p l y ? Did he make an honest reply? Did he face the facts, and make a fair, frank answer to the serious charges m ade against h i m ? H e d i d n o t ! H e cannot answer witli truth. Elis whole scheme was conceived in falsehood and fraud, born in iniquity and m a t u r e d into a fraternal racket and a wicked, perverse swindle. H e cannot face the facts. T h e facts prove his guilt. H e cannot stand f o u r square. His scheme is not on the square, and his racket is crooked. H e cannot make an honest, s t r a i g h t f o r w a r d answer. Such an answer would be a confession. In such a situation w h a t did he do i H e substituted ingenious stratagems and cunning artifices in a plausible reply for honest answer. An d w h a t were the su bterfuge he used instead of an honest, s t r a i g h t f o r w a r d answer based upon the truth and the facts?. First: The Convention and C onnnitte.es Like a dishonest debtor who schemes to beat his honest debts by carrying his pro per ty in his wife’s name, he hides behind the so-called “joint activities” of “ v o lu nt a r y” committees and a “ unani mous” National Convention— absolutely dom inated and completely controlled by himself— through which self-constructed mouthpiece he praises and exalts himself and declares himself innocent and duly acquitted. Ho w ev er, knowing full well the true na tu re of the aforesaid “ vol untary” committees and the “ un an im ous ” con vention, the compulsion, duress, deception and illusion un de r which they acted, or purp orted to act, and being fear ful th at the ca m ou flage might not be sufficient— like a pa ten t medicine ve n d o r of quack cure-all remedies— he had the “ Defense C o m m i t t e e ” offer a reward of One Th o u s a n d Doll ars to anyone who can prove t h a t the committees did not exist and t h a t they did not ren de r their report to the effect and in the ma nn e r described, etc. T h u s he finally acquits himself by offering an a w a r d — r a t h e r subtle evidence of guilt to keen minds and all seeing eyes— is it no t? Like a dexterous p r o m o t e r of a fraudulent organization, when confronted by the accusing finger of truth and who is in da n g e r of being seized by the hands of justice, he turns to his deceived and defrauded victims and cries: “ De fe nd me, defend me, lest I and our great brother hoo d and splendid or d er p e r i s h ! ” T h e charges are against M r . Lewis, not against his members, who with his.

(35) deceptive arts and clever scheme he has misled and victimized, many of whom are still under the blinding influence of his cunning arts of deception, and so by the cleverest of crafty and adroit manipulations he leads his deceived and deluded victims to believe t hat they have been attacked and thus uses them as a bulwark for his safety and as an instrument for his defense. H i s unscrupulous methods and the trickery employed to deceive and induce his committees to defend and whitewash him will ap pear, in their naked ugliness, throughout this hook. T h e value of the findings of the “ Defense Committee,” the persuasive force of the “ Unanimous Convention” will be specifically dealt with in Chap ter Six in connection with the fraudulent nature and true status of his family racket.. Second: The A lle ged Conspiracy Feigning, as the guilty often do, the m a r t y rd o m of an innocent “ victim” of vicious and wicked persecution, he makes the counter charge of a terrible plot and an awful conspiracy to expose his swindle and to destroy his family racket. By this ingenious ruse of destructive and all-consuming conspiracy— behind this frail man of straw, constructed by himself for his tempor ary security— he hopes to hide, like an ostrich with its head buried in the sand, until the fury of the rising and increasing storm of righteous protests o f his wronged and de fra ude d victims blows over. W e reply in C ha pt e r One to this makeshift contrivance used by him to create sympathy for himself and with the hope of diverting attention fro m the facts so as to prevent serious consideration of the truth of charges upon their merits.. Third: False Issues and Confusion Being unable to meet the real charges, the essence of which is t hat he fabricated a spurious R. C. O r d e r and falsely represented it to be a genuine Rosicrucian O r d e r which is a fraud and a swindle, he resorts to the bewildering disguise of setting up false issues, of misstating all issues and of singling out immaterial issues to which he makes plausible replies which he regards as being fully answered and shown to be false. H e anticipates this clever stratagem in his.

(36) c. “ Impo rtan t F o r e w o r d ”2 wherein he argues th at if the one wh o is making the charges is found to have been incorrect or to have falsified in one or two of his statements, then all o f his evidence should be disregarded and the charges must by reason t h e r e o f be ignored. Th us he prepares his readers so t h a t the trickery he employs will be successful and have the desired and intended effect. T o make doubly sure th at the issues and the serious charges will be ignored or forgotten, he sets up a smoke-screen by resor tin g to every known artifice to confuse, confound, bewilder, b a mb oo zl e and nonplus his members and the public with the hope o f escaping the wrath of those he has wronged and circumvent and forestall a just verdict based upon the facts in the case. These matters and the clever methods of this cunning p r o p r i e t o r of a fraternal racket, although noted t h r ou gh ou t this entire Book, are given special consideration in C h a p t e r T w o .. Fourth: Personal A tta c ks and Counter-Charges T o save himself and to pe rpetuate his spurious R. C. enterprise and family racket he makes unjustified attacks and false c o un ter charges against the Supreme G r a n d M a s t e r of the authentic Rosi crucian P'raternity in America. T he se attacks and his c o un ter charges he supports by falsified and man uf a ct ur ed evidence. It is apparent that his purpose is to discredit us th a t he may escape the charges we make against him and to destroy or ren d er impo ten t the authentic Rosicrucian O r d e r in America, th a t his fra ud ul ent R. C. enterprise may be recognized and reg a rd e d as the authentic order. H i s efforts to destroy the authentic O r d e r , to discredit its official head and the detestable methods employed to accomplish his unworthy purposes are fully considered in C h a p t e r T h r e e , where his despicable methods and deplorable tactics are exposed. The low degree and the extreme limits to which this unscrupulous fabricator, pro mo te r and pr o p ri e to r of this fra ud ul ent R. C. e n te r prise and fraternal racket has stooped and will go to save himself and to perpetuate his mystic swindle, conducted un de r the guise o f brotherly love and in the spirit of fraternalism, are fully d e m o n strated by his own acts and wanton met hods as is shown in this chapter and also in C ha p t e r Four. 2 W h i te Book D, p. 5..

(37) PREAMBLE. F ifth : Petty Chicanery Par ticular and studious attention is directed to Ch apter Four, wherein Lewis’ claims of Rosicrucian authority from and through Clandestine M a s o n r y and his claims of authority by, from and through various H'orld Councils and International R . C. Councils are completely refuted. I lis emphatic denial of any connections or relations whatever with Aleister Crowley, the notorious Black Magician, whom Lewis denounces and severely arraigns, and his denial of Crowley’s connections with the O .T .O . ( Ordo Templi O r i e n ti s ) , from which he claims to hold a Ch a r te r granting Rosi crucian authority to him, are shown to be absolutely false. All of his mythical claims of authority from non-existing W o r l d and International R. C. Councils having failed, his latest and final claim of a uthoritative recognition by the F U DOS I ( Federation I'niverselle des Ordres el Societes In iti atiques) , which he claims guarantees the genuineness and authenticity of his family racket “ as the only authentic Rosicrucian O r d e r in N o r t h and South America, perpetuating the ancient and true organization of the Rosicrucians, and their genuine principles and laws,” is shown to be a huge and monumental hoax and hocus-pocus perpetrated by Lewis, with the assistance of a few of his Europ ean confederates, to give plausibility to his spurious claims of Rosicrucian authen ticity. In this Ch ap te r his “ holier-than-thou” attitude and the sincerity of his vehement denunciation of all sex teachings by occult and mystic schools in connection with the mysteries are shown to be inconsistent and in sharp contrast with his close association and affiliation with Black M a st e rs of degraded sex practices, with sex perverts, with leaders of Nudist cults and with teachers of de g r ade d and dangerous sex teachings. Faced with the necessity of admitting th at his claims of Rosi crucian authority from the International R. C. Councils were false and of admitting his connection with Crowley in and through the O .T .O ., he resorted to the unholy and dangerous expediency of atte mptin g to prove the false to be true and to sustain his unten able position by the publication of falsified and manufactured evi dence and mutilated documents. In this and also in Chapters F'ive and Six, students and investi ga tor s of fraudulent O rd ers and fraternal rackets will find excellent.

(38) material for the study of one of the cleverest and most successful swindlers, trafficking in brotherly love and exploiting the nobler instincts and higher ideals of mankind. P e r h a p s the Po s t Office Depar tment and the Federal T r a d e Commission will also find the material of interest, because— a fte r all— inducing men and women to part with their money and to join a spurious o r d e r and fra t e r n a l racket on false representations is just as fra udu len t— just as rancid and pernicious— as any ot her fraudulent commercial scheme p a w n ing off bogus stocks, worthless bonds or rotten p ot ato es on u n a d vised and credulous people. In truth and in fact, it is f ar more pernicious and mischievous, since it robs its victims not only of things material, but exploits their nobler impulses and robs them of their higher ideals. And all readers will be astonished, if not du m fou nde d, at the clever trickery, the cunning devices and the subtle artifice employed to promote and carry on this swindle, and the d ep rav ed tactics and shocking chicanery resorted to by the m aster mind of the Lewistonian Hie ra rc hy of F r a u d to save himself and to p e rp e t u a t e his fraternal racket.. Sixth: Shifting Claims of A u th o r it y T h e various and conflicting claims as to the source or sources of authority made by Lewis for his spurious R. C. O r d e r and fraternal enterprise are not generally available. T h e r e f o r e , to make such material available for all interested parties and to p r e serve a compiled record thereof, a supplemental review o f the hodgepodge claims of the claptrap authority asserted by him from time to time during the past twenty-one years, is to be found in Chapter Five. T h e r e is an abundance of other evidence to prove t h a t his socalled R. C. O r d e r is spurious and counterfeit. H o w e v e r , the various, different, conflicting, improbable and impossible claims of authority; the changing and shifting fro m one source o f alleged authority to ano ther ; the suspicious statement so often m ade th at his claims have been investigated by so many different committees and found to be genuine, showing th at he knows their inherent weakness and feels the need of having them bolstered up by certifi cation from outside sources; and the contradictory statements, the self-impeaching explanations and the “ puffed-up” fabulous, u n r e a .

(39) sonable claims made by Lewis for his spurious R. C. O r d e r are pr oo f sufficient, within themselves, and most convincing to un biased, incredulous and ungullible men and women of average intelligence, when fully reviewed, compared and analyzed. Out of his own mouth and by his own published statements, he convicts himself.. Seventh: Public Debate H a v i n g employed every known artifice, cunning machination, clever stratagem, bewildering disguise and depraved chicanery, and after ignoring for more than a year and a half our sincere offer for a fair, dignified, complete and decisive investigation by a competent tribunal,3 made in response to his second challenge for a public debate, and refusing to join in such an investigation, because he cannot face the facts before a competent tribunal, therefore, he concludes his Black Bo o k o f Deception— miscalled W h i t e B o o k D — by publishing and discussing the third challenge to a public debate. W e reply to this— one of his often-used and overworked subter fuges— in the Seventh and concluding Ch ap te r of this Book.. (43) T H E GREAT CONSPIRACY BUGABOO AS A SHIELD FOR AN OCCULT FRAUD C tinning Stratagem T h e I m p e r a t o r of the Lewis H ie ra r c h y lias much to say in “ W h ite ( ? ) Book D ” and also in a small booklet issued in 1933 under the title of “Guilty” concerning an alleged conspiracy of certain named parties ( h er e a fte r to be dealt with) for the purpose of injuring A M O R C and diminishing the Royal Revenues of his Hierar ch al Racket. H e uses the conspiracy “b ugbear” rath er cleverly as a protective device to screen and protect his own acts in the operation of a fraudulent device and occult swindle, and skillfully gives it the plausible appearance of being a wicked and criminal combination entered into by revengeful, designing and self-seeking persons to wreck a worthy and noble o rd er— his own racket— and to injure the supporting and paying members thereof ■— who are, in fact, deluded and un fortu nate victims of his beguil ing deceit. Such is but one of the many clever tricks, skillful m a neuvers, cunning stratagems and ingenious subterfuges used by this M a s t e r of the Black A r t of Deception to fool his victims and to keep them fooled. H e denies that he practices Black Magic, but deception is one of the vicious forms of Black M a g ic .1. The A u th e n tic Order in Conspiracy A gainst a Spurious, Fraudulent Order H e charges th at the official head of the Aut hen tic Rosicrucian O r d e r in America, which he alleges is only a small organization conducted from a small and shabby farmhouse in Pennsylvania,2 is in conspiracy against his spurious, fabricated and fraudulent R. C. O r d e r which he and his son are using as a plausible device for the successful operation of a money-making scheme for the complete 1 See discussion of the Black A r t of Deception, Volum e 1, p. 338. - See Repr oduct i on of Le wi s ’ exhibit No. 2 and our reply thereto in C h a p t e r I I I of this book..

(44) support and luxurious living of his family, his so n’s family and the gratification of his own inordinate desire to be the head o f a large organization and to rule it like a mighty C z a r, whose m o st trivial wish is a profound and sacred law— final, if you please— from which there is no appeal and none to gainsay.3 T h e A ut he nt i c in conspiracy against the spurious! T h i n k of it! T h e true and gen uine in conspiracy against the false trad ucers and f ra u d u l e n t user of its Ho ly Symbols and Sacred N a m e ! L e t it be r e m e m b e r e d that there can be no wrongful and unlawful conspiracy to tell the truth and that co-operation with others to expose a f r a u d and to uncover a swindle is not— cannot be— conspiracy. Therefore, Lewis’ charge of conspiracy against us is a dressed-up “ b u g a b o o . ” 4. Tim ely W a r n i n g G w e n Lo ng before any of Lewis ’ fo rm e r members, w h o m he says are iniquitous conspirators, discovered th a t his racket was a f r a u d ulent enterprise and a mystifying swindle, and before they ente red upon serious and careful investigation thereof, the w r i te r ha d re peatedly published in many books, magazines and p a m p h l e ts the facts, namely: that A M O R C was fabricated by Lew is ; t h a t it is a spurious R. C. O r d e r ; th at it is a delusion and a fra ud , and th a t it is a clever scheme of Lewis to make money and to gl orify him self. Indeed, since shortly a ft e r he launched his f ra u d u l e n t and spurious Rosicrucian O r d e r in 1915 to the present time we have been and still are advising the public and interested parties o f the true nature of this fraternal swindle. Let us examine carefully into this r em ark ab le conspiracy to ex pose a fraud and to uncover a swindle.. E. E. Thomas, a Conspirator Dr. T h o m a s had been a leading m em b e r o f A M O R C . Lewis ordained him as a minister in his Pristine C hu rc h' and also a p pointed him the M a s t e r of H e r m e s Lo d g e A M O R C of L o s A n geles, California, with a thousand or mo re members. D u r i n g the latter p a r t of 1930 the M a s t e r and many of the m em be rs o f th a t 5 I his is discussed at length in C h a p t e r VI of this Book. 4 See ou r st atement concer ning this all eged conspi racy, V o lu m e I, pp. 277-278. 5 See fac-simile reproduct ion No. 21, V o lu m e I, p. 282..
