Current & Future Events 2014
Our Vice President for 2014, Jean Shaw, was born in Nashville and has lived within 20 miles of her birth place her entire life.
Jean graduated from Litton High School and then attended Vanderbilt University.
She and her husband, Buddy, were married in 1978. Theirs is a blended family and they have raised three sons. Ask Jean about her first great grand- daughter, born this past October, and I’m sure she will enjoy sharing pictures with you.
Jean was taught by her grandmother to hand piece and quilt at the early age of six. Being a fourth generation quilter, she describes herself as having a
“love affair” with fabric her entire life. Her mother often joked that Jean could pick out the “most expensive fabric from 200 bolts in less than a minute!” Like lots of quilters, she spent most of her teenage and early adult years making garments. In 1993, quilting took over her sewing. At that time, Jean learned to machine piece and quilt while taking a class from Sehoy Welshofer at Cloth World in Hendersonville.
When asked how many quilts she has made, Jean answered, “I don’t know if I could count the number of quilts that I have made and probably don’t want to know.”
Jean enjoys the complete process, saying, “I think my favorite part is selecting the fabrics and cutting the project out. There are always so many possibilities with the different fabric choices! I guess I feel like I am taking the first step on a ‘fun adventure’ almost every time I select a pattern and start making fabric
decisions.” Because Jean first learned to quilt cutting pieces out with scissors, she has decided that her favorite tool is her rotary cutter, saying, “We’ve come a long way!”
Teaching quilting since 1996, she feels that she has, “opened up many new friendships.” Traveling to other areas of the country and meeting other folks who love our craft, she feels that she has enjoyed every class that she has taught.
Jean has been a member of MCQG for three years. Her interest in joining came from the number of projects and activities that the guild has to offer…”
seemed like there was enough variety that everyone could be involved in something that they enjoyed personally.”
If you have not met Jean, be sure to introduce yourself at the next meeting.

From our Vice-President -- Jean Shaw - 264-2159
It was great to see everyone at the March meeting...glad we were able to change the week and get
together. Missed those who couldn't be there. It is hard to believe that the first quarter of 2014 is drawing to an end.
We had 28 ladies present their #12 UFO's at the meeting! What motivation for us all to complete those projects in 2014! Remember that in April we will be showing your #11 UFO...in addition to the regular monthly prize
drawing, there will also be a drawing for those who have completed all three projects since the beginning of the year - numbers 5, 12 and 11. Can't wait to see all the items that are brought in and finished! If you haven't joined in, it isn't too late to submit your list and get in the monthly excitement.
In April the "Strips and Strings" ladies will be joining us for a special program about their projects and
techniques. Bobbie and Ginger are very entertaining and we are certain you will enjoy their presentation. Come prepared to want to go home and start string piecing using up all those scraps and pieces that we keep saving.
Jean
Ice storm one week – 75 degrees the next! I’m so happy we were able to reschedule our meeting. If you missed it, we had a nice meal with good company. Most people stayed for a major part of the afternoon. The last ones to leave were the Beginner (or Refresher) Bee group – they looked like they were having a great time.
Something brought up after the meeting – Did you know we have an extensive library? It’s in the gray metal cabinet in the storage closet and is unlocked during our regular meetings as well as some Sit and Sews. Lisa is working on a new listing of books and patterns available, but until that’s ready, you can find the old list on our website musiccityquiltguild.org under Resources. Check it out at the next meeting. It’s one of the benefits of membership!
Hoping to see you all at Retreat!
Teresa

Minutes from the March Meeting, Continued
Monthly UFO Challenge –Jean Shaw’s husband drew the project #11 for the March UFO. There were a lot of participants showing their UFO accomplishments on project #12. Remember: When you show your monthly UFO project, please put your name on a slip of paper to enter the monthly prize drawing. Teresa Raleigh won for February.
Jean also explained that the old UFO notebook was still in effect. Members can add pages to the notebook at any time. More UFO’s can be added to your list, too.
Program
Jean Shaw presented program about the history of quilt patterns and how they got their names. This will be an on-going series.
Jamie Williams held the door prize drawings.
Show and Tell – Once again we were all blown away by the amazing talent in our guild.
Lunch – A wonderful lunch of soups, salads, and desserts was provided by the O-Z members. The hostesses, led by Sally Collier, did an outstanding job with set-up and clean-up. Thank you, ladies.
Karen Gibson made a motion to adjourn. It 2nd by Jean Shaw.
Respectfully submitted by, Donna Minter

March - Hexie Demonstration and Instructions by Jamie Williams April - Baby Scrappy Bargello taught by Pam Thorne
You will need a working sewing machine (including power cords and foot pedal) with a sewing machine foot to sew an accurate 1/4" seam, neutral thread, 4 wound bobbins, scissors, seam ripper, pins and any other notions you usually sew with. Also a rotary cutter with a new blade, a cutting mat at least 18" x 24" and a 6" x 24" ruler. A stilletto is also very helpful, if you have one. Or, you can do like I do and use the tip end of your seam ripper. DO NOT bring an iron as they will be provided. We have to be very careful to not blow the breakers and lose power.
You will also need to go to http://quiltville.com/scrapbargellopf.html to print out the pattern. Each person is responsible for bringing their own pattern. If you have questions please email Pam Thorne.
