Continuing EduCation CrEdits

Target Audience

This Meeting is designed for pathologists, cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, students, and other members of the cytopathology community.

Educational Objectives

The American Society of Cytopathology’s 69th Annual Scientific Meeting will:

• Integrate recent advances in Cytopathology with current practice

• Demonstrate the role of research in expanding the field of cytopathology and in optimizing patient care

• Identify current best practices in Cytopathology and Cytotechnology education

• Create a forum for advocacy on behalf of cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, and their patients.

Earn CME and CMLE Credits

Continuing Medical Education (CME): The American Society of Cytopathology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Society of Cytopathology designates this live educational activity for a Live Meeting - a maximum of 28.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. OnDemand Meeting - for a maximum of 34.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Continuing Medical Laboratory Education (CMLE): The ASC designates this activity for a maximum of 28.5 In Person + 34.5 On Demand Continuing Medical Laboratory Education (CMLE) credit hours for non-physicians. The CMLE credit hours meet the continuing education requirements for the ASCP Board of Registry Certification Maintenance Program. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Continuing Certification: This activity will offer Lifelong Learning credit in the American Board of Pathology’s (ABPath) Continuing Certification program.

Note: Beginning in 2021, the American Board of Pathology (ABPath) will no longer require Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs) for Part II Lifelong Learning of the Continuing Certification program. For additional information, visit the ABPath website. Diplomates will still be required to complete and report a minimum of 70 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for each two-year CC reporting period.

Participation in Patient Safety continuing medical education will be encouraged, but is no longer required.

The ASC will provide ONLINE session evaluations for all attendees to complete in order to receive a certificate for CME/

CMLE credits. This activity is approved for continuing education credits in the State of Florida and the State of California.

If you are a director of a residency or fellowship program, please join us on Thursday, November 11th, 2021 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm for this discussion.

3. Short Courses (CME/CMLE)

Short Courses (previously referred to as non-microscopic Workshops) are intensive sessions promoting interaction and the exchange of information regarding specific significant topics.

4. Video Microscopy Tutorials (CME/CMLE)

Interact with experts in the field during these small, informal slide reviews. Presenters project slides through a video microscope to review interesting cases. Participants do not use individual microscopes.

for an aDDItIonal fee

Roundtable Discussions (CME/CMLE)

These sessions encourage intimate discussions on different topics.

Each table will have one speaker facilitating up to 9 participants.

Participants may register for one topic and are not permitted to switch tables. A box lunch will be included with your participation.

Panel Luncheon Seminars (CME/CMLE)

These interactive sessions focus on a single topic and are

presented by nationally known expert(s). The seminars commence with a lunch followed by the lecture. An opportunity for questions and answers is offered at the end of the seminar.

Sign-out with the Professor (CME/CMLE)

These 1 hour sessions provide close contact with an expert in the field doing what we all love, cytomorphology. Each session will focus on one area and the cases will be presented in a sign-out style at a 10-headed or 8-headed microscope. Participants are encouraged to join in the discussion.

Ultrasound FNA Workshop (CME/CMLE)

In this interactive workshop, participants will work with faculty in small groups to improve FNA biopsy technique and learn ultrasound guidance. A short lecture on FNA techniques and US guidance will be followed by practice sessions with the participants divided into small groups of 4-5. With supervision, each participant will practice FNA biopsy and smearing as well as using US guidance.

Teach the Teacher (CME/CMLE)

Learn effective methods for teaching and troubleshooting techniques of fine needle aspiration procurement.

Racism, Disparities and Bias: Seeking to Understand Root Causes and Solutions

Honoring the legacy of Dr. Leonard Koss, who was always interested in searching to understand the pathogenesis of disease, this lecture probes the roots of racism and explores how our fundamental thinking as researchers and clinicians is unknowingly influenced. By understanding the impact of bias on our approach to understanding disease processes, we can be better address societally driven disparities in care and outcomes, facilitating progress in achieving health equity.

Strategies in Cytopathology Education

Part 1: Education of Cytopathology Fellows during a time of change During the past year, cytopathology fellowships have had to adjust to many changes, including the need to suddenly find ways to provide educational content and fulfill key fellowship requirements during the COVID pandemic, and make updates to their curriculum based on the revised milestones. This session will have a goal of educating fellowship directors about interesting and innovative approaches to learning at a distance during the pandemic, providing perspective on wellness initiatives related to cytopathology fellows, and serve as a chance to learn how programs are addressing the new ACGME milestones that went into effect July 2021. A panel approach will be utilized to share how different programs adapted to the new changes.

JASC Hot Topic: Transitioning to HPV Primary Screening for Cervical Cancer

The impending transition towards performing primary HPV screening for cervical cancer is upon us in the United States. This shift has evoked some excitement and lots of fear in the cytology community. The Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology (JASC) is accordingly pleased to host a special session on this timely and contentious topic. Dr. Robert Goulart, a pathologist from New England Pathology Associates in Springfield, MA, will summarize current cervical cancer screening guidelines and highlight the new recommendations by the American Cancer Society to switch to primary HPV screening. Dr. Richard Lieberman, a Gynecologist &

Pathologist from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, will share his unique perspective of this changeover. Donna Russell, the Cytology supervisor at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY, will convey her viewpoint of this evolution from a cytotechnologist’s perspective. Dr. Annabelle Farnsworth, a Pathologist at Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology in NSW, Australia will inform us about the Australian experience of switching to HPV primary screening.
