outdoors, yet sun exposure has a negative impact on our skin. The effects of sunlight accumulate over a lifetime, increasing the risk of developing permanent damage. Pro- tection from UV rays and prevention of UV induced skin damage and aging is more crucial in today‘s world than ever before!

Sunburn is primarily caused by UVB rays (290 - 320 nm), however UVA rays (UVA II 320 - 340 nm, UVA I 340 - 400 nm) can alter the regeneration process of skin tissue and accelerate skin aging. As both UVB and UVA radiation can cause skin cancer, a combina- tion of effi cacious UVB and UVA fi lters that provide superior protection is a must for all sun care products.

BASF offers an extended product portfo- lio for market relevant and sophisticated sun care formulations:

The use of UV fi lters to protect the skin is subject to legislation in many countries. The time needed for approval depends upon the individual requirements of each country and region. The table below summarizes the approval status of BASF UV fi lters in different countries and regions.

The approval process for UV fi lters in USA takes longer than in most countries due to the regulation of sunscreens as over-the-counter-drugs (OTC). The current approval process for new fi lters in the USA still remains under review.

OPTIMAL SUN PROTECTION

BASED ON OUR PRODUCT PORTFOLIO

No matter whether daily care or beach care, sun protection is very important. UV fi lters are the protective ingredients in sunscreens, how- ever other ingredients also a play an important role in the performance and sen sorial aspect of the formulation.

BASF offers a comprehensive portfolio to achieve elegant day and sun care products to meet the needs of todays’ consumers.

For example, the emulsifi ers and polymers stabilize the formulation and emollients solubilize the crystalline UV fi lters and contribute to the sensorial touch of the total formulation.

In addition to effective UV fi lters, an exceptional sunscreen contains complimentary ingredients to enhance the fi nal formulation, eg:
