2. Summary of the programme (a half to one page A4)

The program is the school’s sustained environment-related activities and strategies that it has initiated and integrated in its instruction, research, extension and/or administration. The program has been promoted and established and strengthened in school with the following principles:

o The school should be in the forefront in protecting the environment through education.

o The school is a role model in the utilization of environmentally sound methods that maximize the use of valuable resources, encourage resources conservation and recovery, and foster appropriate management of waste materials.

o The school centers on awareness of sustainable development issues, enhancing knowledge,

influencing values and attitudes, and encouraging responsive behavior and learning that leads to action.

o The school promotes public information as a major component of education and a continuous campaign for massive environmental awareness is indeed necessary.

o The school focuses on advocacy and other multi-faceted program of activities done within the school system especially relating to environmental concerns needs to be documented, encouraged, and recognized.

3. Background information or reasons why the school created this programme

It all started way back in 1997 under the leadership of Miss Marina Q. Decipolo Elementary School Principal I, wherein pieces of papers, candy and biscuit wrappers scattered on the school grounds. Despite the presence of garbage cans in every classroom, pupils still threw their garbage anywhere inside the school campus. It is for this problem that the program “Basura Ko, Ilagay Ko Sa Bulsa Ko” (My Garbage, In My Pocket) was conceived. It aimed to instill in every pupil’s mind that their garbage are their own obligation and it is imperative to maintain cleanliness in school. Pupils were taught proper garbage segregation, collection and disposal. All subject areas have its own space in the school campus too, that served as pupils’ nook where they see varied signage and information on environmental concerns .Such practice continued through the years and later was found out to be in consonance to the government’s Zero Waste Program. Years passed, the school slowly raised its bar in training environmental stewards. Environment-related pupils’ organizations were organized. They help intensify the school’s campaign for environmental protection. Environment month was celebrated with varied environmental care and protection activities such as Eco Quiz Bee, Poster Making, and Search for Mr. and Ms. ESWM (Ecological Solid Waste Management). Teachers were also sent to attend seminars and trainings on Ecological Waste Management

Parents also actively supported the school’s implementation in its various environmental programs such as the information drive on Republic Act 9003 ( Solid Waste Management Act) which ensures the proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste through the formulation and adoption of the best environmental practices in ecological waste management excluding incineration. The school collaborated with the different agencies and offices in its endeavor for environmental awareness, care, and concern. The Department of Agriculture through its office in the city government conducted symposia, film showing, and helped in information dissemination, seeds and trees dispersal – their way of

support to the school’s mission and vision for the realization of the national goals and objectives of environmental protection and preservation. The Barangay, the local government unit where the school belongs supported to the school’s programs and projects.

In 2004,

the school adopted the Environment-Friendly School Program of the provincial

government

and in 2005, a Memorandum of Agreement was made between the Barangay, and the school wherein the former committed to help advocate the “Oplan Linis Palampas Riverbank”- an outreach program which aimed to conserve and protect water resources. Scheduled clean-up activities were conducted quarterly.

. The school’s initiatives on environmental care and protection was even more intensified in year 2009 with the birth of another environmental care and protection program that is Every Child An Environmental Steward Program (ECAESP) under the leadership of Dr. Ma. Carla L. Romanillos, ESP-III . It was in year 2010 that the school adopted the City-initiated ESWM Reach-Out To students’ Campaign and earned Hall of Fame in 2012. Many other school environmental projects and strategies were conceived and implemented such as “Each One Pick One” and “Collect A Garbage, Redeem A Package” “ESWM Signature Campaign”, and “ECO-Tour Guides” proofs that despite of the coming in and out and replacement of school administrators, the school sustained with a common goal: that is to develop concerned and productive environmental stewards in an environment-friendly school.

Now and then, the school earned many awards for sustainability of its programs and projects on environmental care and protection and to date, adopts the Sustainable Environment- Friendly School Program of the government with the school’s sustained and additional programs, strategies and projects of Every Child An Environmental Steward Program.

3.Objectives/goals of the programme Goals:

o To develop a highly-competent, civic-spirited, life skilled and God-loving individual by providing them with a medium to actively participate these programs and projects and contribute towards the building of a humane, healthy, and productive society

Objectives:

o To adhere to the principles of reduce, recover, re-use and recycle for all aspects of its operation in order to conserve resources and protect the environment. In line with this basic principle, the school shall:

o To consider its environmental impact before approving or implementing a school program or project. o To use environment-friendly, recyclable, recycled-content, less toxic and locally produced materials

whenever possible.

o To reduce or eliminate the use of chemicals, fertilizers and herbicides in the care and maintenance of school grounds and shall encourage the development of natural landscaping and wildlife habitats within the campus.

o To employ environmentally benign methods of controlling mosquitoes, insects and pests and shall discourage the use of harmful pesticides.

o To utilize re-usable dishes and containers for serving food/beverages and discourage the use of plastic bags in dispensing food/beverages in the school canteen.

o To develop a waste management plan along the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle. o To consider waste management when planning school activities and projects.

o To operate a material recovery facility and actively implement proper waste segregation.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

The school shall actively promote resource and environment conservation through school programs and classroom instruction. The school shall:

o Integrate/reflect wherever appropriate thee global care of the earth in the curriculum of all subject/discipline areas.

o Instill in pupils the desire to participate individually and collectively in environmental issues through appropriate classroom and school-wide activities at all levels.

o Formulate and carry out with the collective participation of the teachers, parents and community a school environmental action plan, monitor and evaluate its implementation, and provide the school community with a report of its results.

o Support activities that develop an environmental ethic in its students such as field trips, coastal cleanup drives, and tree-planting activities.

o Encourage teachers to increase their environmental awareness through attendance at conferences, workshops and other professional activities and help them develop teaching strategies that reflect this awareness.

o Make available to teachers such resources that will enhance the teaching of environmental issues.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The school shall actively involve the parents and school community in the promotion of resource and environment conservation. In line with this thrust, the school shall:

o Encourage community participation in the environmental education of pupils through field trips, forums, and formulation of environmental plans.

o Participate in local, national or international programs that promote good environmental practices (e.g., tree-planting, composting, recycling, community beautification, resource conservation, coastal cleanup, and habitat improvement).

o Inform the community of environment-related school programs, projects and activities such as: “Each One, Pick One”, “Surrender a Garbage, Redeem a Package”, coastal clean-ups, tree-planting, etc.

4. Core competencies of students (e.g. knowledge and understanding, cognitive skills, non-cognitive skills and behavioural capacities) that the school aims for within the programme.

o All of the activities, strategies and projects within the program aim to provide knowledge and understanding on the causes of environmental problems and inculcate in the minds of the students different ways and means in protecting the environment. Social responsibility, ethical values, self-reflections, help to develop a highly-competent, civic-spirited, life skilled and God-loving individual by providing them with a medium to actively participate these programs and projects and contribute towards the building of a humane, healthy, and productive society .

5. Period of the time when the programme was or has been implemented

Program Implementation: Every Child An Environmental Steward Program ( ECAESP) started in 2007. Many other school environmental projects and strategies were conceived and implemented such as “Each One Pick One” and “Collect A Garbage, Redeem A Package” “ESWM Signature Campaign”, and “ECO-Tour Guides” . Provide public information on the different programs and projects that the school is implementing such as Brigada Eskwela, Environment-Friendly School Program, etc. through mass media such as Radio announcements, posting of information through tarpaulin, internet, meetings, symposia, and public address system.

In promoting the core competencies, a child-centered approach was adopted to encourage cooperation and the development of life skills , their analyzing power, and their capacity to organize themselves . The 4A’s method of instruction ( Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, Application) assures hands-on and real-life situations through learning by doing.

Summary of results:

1.Pupils become responsible in the management of their garbage. 2.There was a decrease in electrical and water consumption .

3.Pupils learned to use the usable back page of their pad papers before placing it in the waste paper bin. 4. The school become the model of environmental care and protection.

5. The program placed the school to the top due to the various awards earned in the field of environmental care and protection.

6. The whole school community develop the feeling of fulfillment and the desire to think of another strategies for the sustainability of the program.

 Revive/activate scouting activities in all Grade levels for internalization and application of citizenship training.

 Conduct educational trip that is related to the lessons in every subject e.g. classify animals into vertebrate and invertebrate – a trip to the zoo
