VDI stands for “Virtual Desktop Infrastructure,” referring to the use of virtualized desktops that are hosted on a remote centralized server. Because VDI runs on a centralized infrastructure, the end user’s desktop consists only of a screen image on the workstation. Meanwhile, the files, data and applications are stored and managed via the central server.

Thin and Zero Clients are the endpoint devices in a virtual desktop environment. A Thin Client will still have its own operating system (typically Windows® Embedded or Linux® OS), and will

handle some of the data processing and graphics rendering locally. Thin Clients are more suitable to users looking to retain more of the traditional desktop experience, or an environment with heavy graphics demands. A Zero Client, on the other hand, has no operating system and reserves all data processing and rendering for the server side. The server then delivers the processed images back to the Zero Client. This is a true stateless device, and the classic definition of virtualization.

Through the use of Thin and Zero Clients, users can access their desktop from any device – a laptop, tablet, home computer, or smartphone – with connection capabilities from any location. The Customer

A major international bank with more than 200,000 employees in over 40 countries.

The Challenge

The bank plans to migrate over 100,000 users of all kinds from physical PCs running Windows XP to desktops running 64-bit Windows 7. They planned to use virtual desktops as they migrated to Windows 7 desktops to extend the life of their existing PC hardware and then replace them with lower cost Thin Clients over time.

The Benefits and Results

The bank was able to keep the same number of users, save 73% CAPEX/OPEX and redeploy almost 87% of their existing storage. Plus, by using existing storage and servers, the bank was able to reduce their cost per desktop by 65%. The bank achieved similar OPEX reduction of data center space utilization, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and elimination of mechanical components and repair costs.

Finally, this new VDI solution helped the bank to deploy more endpoints for increased density, while still being able to deliver over 300 IOPS and reducing storage latency. In terms of the speed and computing power of the bank’s VDI system, they observed a 30% improvement in boot time and a 60% reduction in application launch times. As an added benefit, the bank also enabled email and desktop searching for all their desktops, which had previously been disabled due to storage performance constraints.

Founded in 1961, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is a four-year public university located in Boca Raton, Florida. Serving a student population of over 30,000 scholars in more than 180 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, FAU ranks as one of the world’s leading research institutions.

The Challenge

The school seeks to find a Zero Client device that can meet the high performance requirements of the most demanding technical and engineering

applications, and they needed a cost effective and eco-friendly solution to complement its new LEED - certified facility and commitment to green engineering. The Zero Clients must support the existing virtualization infrastructure while providing superior reliability and performance. Moreover, they concluded that the maintenance, upgrade and support of traditional PCs presented time and cost-consuming difficulties.

The Benefits and Result

Through the use of ViewSonic VDI technology, Florida Atlantic University realized a 90% increase in energy savings over their traditional PC infrastructure.
